Abstract

Letters are a medium of communication in written form carried out by a person or institution addressed to another person or institution. Definition of Letter, Official Letter 1. Use letterhead if issued by the organization; 2. There is a letter number, attachment, and subject matter; 3. Using the usual opening and closing greetings; 4. Use of various official languages; 5. Include a stamp or seal from an official institution; 6. There are standard format rules. Job Application Letter, Job application letter is a letter made by someone (applicant) addressed to a particular office or company in order to get a job in accordance with the job vacancy offered. Licensing Letter, Licensing Letter is a letter written by someone whose contents concern a request for permission from a certain party to obtain the intended permit. In addition to a personal letter to an agency or office where one works, a permit is also needed to obtain permission from certain parties if a person or a family wants to hold an activity or a crowd in the community, this is intended so that if something unexpected happens that party can take responsibility. The main reason letters are still needed is because we need documents for every business and official activity that is carried out. Written notes will never be replaced by oral communication, although oral documentation with memory in computerized systems is growing rapidly. Letters will be a vital part as long as modern culture and civilization are still running as usual. From the description above, the functions of a letter include: 1. The most accurate reminder tool, because it can be interpreted and can be read again when needed; 2. Black and white evidence, especially a letter of agreement; 3. Documents; 4. Representative/ambassador of the author for readers; 5. Work guidelines, for example decrees, instructions, assignment letters, and so on; 6. Aspects of public relations, because it has an impact on fostering good relations between an institution and its public. In preparing official letters properly and correctly, using several approaches, namely (1) drafting the letter must understand the purpose of making the letter, (2) whether the preparation of the letter is to seek or provide information, and (3) provide decisions, assignments, or reports, submit solicitation, application, offer or order. Letters are an important means of communication.

Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui pemahaman membaca siswa dengan menggunakan Language Experience Approach (LEA) pada siswa kelas VII SMP Negeri 7 Tidore Kepulauan. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kuantitatif dengan desain pra eksperimental. Peneliti mengambil 18 siswa sebagai sampel dari 72 populasi. Tes pilihan ganda yang terdiri dari 10 pertanyaan digunakan untuk mengumpulkan data sebelum dan sesudah pengobatan menggunakan LEA. Analisis data menunjukkan bahwa ada perbedaan yang signifikan antara pre-test dan post-test siswa. Hal ini dibuktikan dari hasil skor pemahaman membaca sebelum perlakuan (690) dengan rata-rata 38,33 dan setelah perlakuan (1220) dengan rata-rata 67,77. Uji t menunjukkan bahwa t-score (7,18) melebihi nilai t-tabel (2,110) pada taraf signifikan 0,05 dengan 17 derajat kebebasan. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa pemahaman membaca siswa dengan menggunakan LEA meningkat secara signifikan.

Abstract

The people of North Maluku, have customary procedures which are the identity of each tribe and each tribe has its own characteristics, such as in the social dance of the Galela-Tobelo tribe in the tide-tide dance. The characteristics of other tribes in North Maluku, and the focus of the researcher is the cultural meaning of the tide-tide dance of the Galela-Tobelo tribe. This tide-tide dance is performed by a group of male and female dancers. In addition, the tide-tide dance is accompanied by traditional music. This study aims to reveal the cultural meaning in the motion and properties of the tide-tide dance of the Tobelo-Galela tribe in Tobe Village, South Tobelo District. The method used is descriptive qualitative research, and the data collection techniques that the researcher uses are observation, refer to entangling skills (SLC), recording and disability techniques, interviews and documentation, as well as data analysis techniques used, namely; data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. Matsumoto and Juang (in Sarwono, 2010: 60), argue that the reciprocal relationship between culture and language shows that no culture can be understood without understanding the language. Based on the analysis of the results of the research on the cultural meaning of the tide-tide dance in Tobe Village, South Tobelo District, namely: a. The movements include: (1) preparation for training, (2) preparing clothing, (3) dancers not wearing footwear, (4) hand movements, (5) foot movements, (6) face-to-face movements, (7) distance between dancers. While b. The properties used by dancers when performing the dance are divided into two parts, namely set properties and hand properties. The property set consists of: (1) damuru (tifa), (2) gongs, (3) kebaya, (4) sarong (skirt), (5) konde, (6) salempang (shawl), (7) white shirt, ( 8) trousers, (9) tuala (headband), (10) waistband. Meanwhile, Handproperty consists of (1) preparing clothes, (2) fiol (violin). There are several cultural meanings such as, religious/belief, social and scientific. Each has its own cultural meaning, and the most dominant cultural meaning is the meaning of social culture.

Abstract

This research was conducted wiht the aim to find out how the students ability in writing poetry in class X SMAN 10 Ternate city and how to improve the ability to write poetry using the example and non-example models of grade X students of SMAN 10 ternate city. The methoud used in this research is descriptive quantitative and the instruments used are observation, interviews, tests and documentation.Based on the results of the studi, poetry writing skills improvement using example and non-example models class X students of SMAN 10 Ternate city consisting of 25 students can be seen that students are able writing poetry using model example and non-example, this is known from the results of research that there are worksheets on the pretest and postets which have increased, in the pretest and postest which have in creased, in the pretest with atotal value of 1.005 with and average value of 40,2 whereas the results of the posttest in the write poetry using the example and non-example models class X students of SMAN 10 Ternate city, with a value of 1.550 demgas an average value of 63,6 as many  23 students 68% have achieved (KKM) from the initial test results of 17 studens 92 % did not reach (KKM).

Abstract

This research aims to find out: (1) what are the most dominant types of errors made by class VIII of SMP National Banau Kota Ternate in making interrogative sentences? and (2) what are the factors causing errors made by students of class VIII of SMP National Banau Kota Ternate in using interrogative sentences? This research used descriptive qualitative method; this research involved 20 participants. The research instrument used a test, the test was used to obtain data on the types of errors in interrogative sentences. In data collection, tests were used to obtain data on the types of errors in interrogative sentences. In analyzing the data, there are five steps: Identifying students, Classifying types of errors by using the surface taxonomy strategy proposed by Ellis, Counting the number of errors, Discussing data, and Making conclusions. The results showed that there were 4 types of errors, namely omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. The percentages of the errors are 27 omissions (9.71%), 125 additions (43.10%), 129 misformations (44.48%), and 9 misorderings (3.10%). The most dominant error is misformation (44.48%). And the factor that causes students to often make error in making interrogative sentences is intralingual transfer. Based on the analysis of the students' answer sheets, the misformation type errors made by students are because students are still confused in determining the right auxiliary words. The researcher suggested that teachers give students some exercises to minimize the dominant errors and try to find solutions. For the students, students should learn more by practicing writing regularly.

Abstract

Beberapa masalah yang muncul dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris yang berasal dari siswa, guru, strategi, media, atau fasilitas yang digunakan dalam proses belajar mengajar. Guru bahasa Inggris menggunakan teknik pengajaran yang monoton untuk mengajar bahasa Inggris; mereka cenderung untuk fokus pada isi pengajaran mereka daripada bagaimana mereka menyampaikan materi mereka. Dibutuhkan media untuk mendukung teknik guru. Berdasarkan keadaan tersebut peneliti tertarik untuk melakukan studi literatur tentang penerapan media youtube dalam pembelajaran keterampilan berbahasa bagi siswa. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif kualitatif berupa studi kepustakaan. Metode pengumpulan data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode dokumentasi. Metode dokumentasi digunakan karena sumber data berasal dari beberapa artikel di jurnal yang membahas tentang penggunaan video youtube dalam pembelajaran bahasa. Teknik pengumpulan data dalam penelitian ini menggunakan teknik membaca dan mencatat. Teknik analisis data yang digunakan, dalam penelitian ini mengadopsi teori Miles dan Huberman yang meliputi tahapan reduksi data, penyajian data, dan penarikan kesimpulan. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa YouTube adalah alat yang efektif yang dapat membantu siswa memahami bahasa Inggris. Para siswa juga memiliki pandangan positif terhadap penggunaan YouTube dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris. Sebagian besar siswa berpikir bahwa YouTube membantu mereka meningkatkan pemahaman bahasa Inggris mereka. Mereka setuju bahwa mengintegrasikan video YouTube sebagai bagian dari kegiatan kelas memotivasi mereka untuk belajar serta meningkatkan minat mereka.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the competence of third semester students in pronouncing imperative sentences. This research took place at the English Language Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, University of Khairun Ternate. This study used a descriptive qualitative method to explain and describe students’ competence of the third semester of the English education study program in pronouncing imperative sentences. There were 30 students who participating in this study. The technique data collection used the observation and took audio recording from each student. The technique data analysis used pronunciation application and google translate. It was found out that 22 students (73.33%) obtained excellent score. Then seven students (23.33%) obtained good score. And one student (3.33%) test result is sufficient score. In summary, the average score of students in pronouncing English imperative sentences is excellent with a total average score of 84.74.

Abstract

Writing is essentially describing ideas both in journals and in the mass media. This skill is considered as a method of binding knowledge and educational insights, including writing popular scientific papers in the mass media. This study aims to examine the cohesiveness and coherence of texts in the mass media. The data from this study were 5 (five) articles in one of the mass media published in 2017. This study used a descriptive qualitative method, meanwhile, the data was analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model. The results showed that to establish cohesion and coherence in the text, the writers had used conjunctions and punctuation well. However, in terms of coherence, they are still hampered in the process of assembling and sorting ideas that are acceptable in the context of the text.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out the types of error from English into Indonesian text made by sixth semester students at English Department of Khairun University. This was descriptive qualitative research. This study involved 15 respondents who were taken by using purposive sampling technique. The result of this research showed that respondents made 4 types of errors in English into Indonesian translation text. The types of error were inversion, omission, deviation, and addition of meaning.  It can be concluded that the sixth semester students at English Department of Khairun University still made error when translating the English text.

Abstract

The development of technology and learning English is towards the concept of providing electronic feedback. This research aims: 1). To find out electronic feedback with ‘Grammarly’ in students' writing of English thesis, and 2). To find out the lecturers’ perceptions and experiences related to the use of the 'Grammarly' application as electronic feedback, including in students’ writing of English thesis at universities in Ternate City. Ten lecturers as supervisors and five research proposal texts of thesis from the three universities in Ternate (Khairun University, Muhammadiyah University of North Maluku, and the Teaching and Education College (STKIP)) became the sources of the data in this study. Data collection techniques in this study were carried out using documents and interviews. The collected data were analyzed using thematic analysis (thematic analysis). The findings show that the use of the 'Grammarly' application in the text of the student thesis research proposal revealed some feedback on the errors in students’ writing of their thesis research proposal. Feedback on errors that occur in all existing texts is primarily related to spelling, followed by grammar (grammar) such as the use of articles (article), plural markers, prepositions, and subject-verb agreement. In addition, errors that occur in some thesis proposal texts are the use of punctuation and capital letters. Ten lecturers’ interview data show a positive perception in the use of 'Grammarly'. However, only four have used its application and six other lecturers have not used it.
