Abstract

Hemodialysis is a vital therapy for patients with end-stage chronic kidney disease (CKD), yet it often imposes significant psychological and social burdens, including stress, depression, and a diminished sense of autonomy. While prior studies have highlighted the benefits of fostering a positive mindset in chronic care, little is known about the internal processes through which patients cultivate such resilience. This study aims to explore the lived experiences of hemodialysis patients in developing a positive mindset and to analyze its role in enhancing their quality of life. Using a qualitative research design with a descriptive phenomenological approach, data were collected through in-depth, semi-structured interviews with ten purposively selected patients at Blambangan Hospital, Indonesia. Data were analyzed using Colaizzi’s method, ensuring rigorous and participant-centered thematic extraction. The findings revealed four interrelated themes: (1) awareness and self-acceptance, reflecting emotional transition from denial to constructive adaptation; (2) family support, both emotional and practical, which bolstered motivation and treatment adherence; (3) trust in medicine and spiritual engagement, which helped patients find inner peace and existential meaning; and (4) focus on controllable aspects of daily life, enabling self-regulated health behavior and increased agency. These themes converged into a holistic framework where psychological, social, and spiritual domains interacted synergistically to build resilience and foster emotional well-being. This study underscores the importance of integrating cognitive-behavioral interventions, family involvement, and spiritual support within hemodialysis care. It also offers insights for educational institutions to reform health curricula and for healthcare systems to adopt interdisciplinary, patient-centered approaches. Future research should explore comparative and longitudinal studies to assess the effectiveness of psychological and spiritual interventions across cultural and religious contexts in chronic care populations.

Abstract

Correctional assisted citizens, particularly those involved in drug-related offenses, often suffer from low self-esteem due to intersecting factors such as broken family backgrounds, social stigma, addiction, and incarceration. These psychological vulnerabilities frequently hinder their rehabilitation and reintegration into society. The aim of this study was to explore the effectiveness of Solution-Focused Brief Counseling (SFBC) in enhancing the self-esteem of inmates, specifically through a case study of an individual (Mas Firman) incarcerated in Banyuwangi Prison. Using a qualitative case study approach supported by literature review, the study applied the five-stage SFBC framework—relationship building, problem identification, goal setting, intervention, and evaluation—and gathered data through interviews, observations, and documentation triangulation. The results showed that SFBC contributed significantly to the subject's behavioral and emotional transformation. Initially exhibiting signs of introversion, distress, and hopelessness, the subject demonstrated increased self-confidence, religious engagement, goal-oriented behavior, and social interaction following the counseling sessions. These findings indicate that self-esteem is a malleable psychological construct that can be improved through structured, culturally sensitive, and strength-based interventions. The subject’s transformation was driven not only by counseling techniques but also by the integration of spiritual and familial dimensions into the therapeutic process. This study makes several contributions to the literature. Theoretically, it contextualizes SFBC within a correctional setting, enriching its application in non-traditional domains. Methodologically, it provides a comprehensive qualitative model for narrative-based inmate rehabilitation research. Practically, it presents SFBC as an adaptable tool for correctional counselors and educators to support psychological restoration. Furthermore, this study highlights the broader educational utility of SFBC in character development, life skills training, and mental health interventions, especially within inclusive and culturally grounded educational environments. The findings suggest that SFBC can be effectively integrated into correctional counseling systems and educational programs, particularly in settings that prioritize individual strengths, cultural identity, and spiritual values. Future research is encouraged to explore SFBC's application using comparative case studies or mixed-method designs, and to examine the long-term sustainability of its psychological impacts across diverse institutional contexts.

Abstract

Verbal bullying among junior high school students remains a critical issue due to its profound psychological, social, and academic consequences. The increasing prevalence of such behavior, coupled with the absence of reliable assessment tools, hinders early detection and intervention in school settings. This study aimed to develop and validate the Bullying Verbal Assessment (BVA) instrument in the form of an e-book, intended to identify instances of verbal bullying among students at SMPN 28 Malang. Using a quantitative approach, data were collected from 92 students selected through quota sampling. The instrument consisted of 41 items assessed using the Rasch Model through the Winsteps application. Results indicated that 16 items met the validity criteria (fit MNSQ values between 0.5–1.5, ZSTD within –2.0 to +2.0, and Pt Measure Corr values between 0.4–0.85), and the instrument achieved a reliability index of 0.69, falling into the moderate category. The findings confirm that the BVA instrument is valid and reliable for detecting verbal bullying behavior. The study provides a practical and accessible assessment tool for school counselors, enhancing early intervention strategies in addressing verbal bullying cases. Its digital format facilitates integration into school counseling programs, supporting both curative and preventive actions. For future research, expanding the demographic scope and exploring the instrument’s applicability across various education levels and digital platforms is recommended to strengthen its utility and impact in broader educational contexts.

Abstract

Bullying remains a critical concern in Indonesian education, with national and global data highlighting persistently high prevalence rates and profound negative impacts on students’ academic, psychological, and social well-being. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of an assertiveness counseling module, utilizing Behavioral Skills Training (BST), in reducing bullying behavior among students at MTs Muhammadiyah 22 Padangsidimpuan. Employing a pre-experimental, one-group pretest-posttest design, a purposively selected sample of 50 students, representing victims, bystanders, and perpetrators, participated in the intervention. Quantitative data were collected using a validated Bullying Behavior Scale and analyzed with paired-sample t-tests. Results revealed a significant decrease in bullying tendencies post-intervention, with most students shifting from moderate/high to low/very low categories, and a large effect size indicating substantial practical impact. The findings confirm that BST-based assertiveness education is effective in transforming bullying behaviors and fostering a more positive school climate, aligning with evidence from international literature while addressing gaps in culturally relevant interventions for religious and semi-rural educational settings. This research contributes practical guidance for integrating assertiveness training into counseling curricula and underscores the urgent need for skill-based anti-bullying strategies in Indonesian schools. Future studies are recommended to employ randomized controlled trials, expand to multiple school contexts, and examine the long-term sustainability of behavioral change to enhance the generalizability and impact of assertiveness education in preventing bullying.

Abstract

Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) play a pivotal role in Indonesian education by integrating religious values, character building, and academic achievement. However, many students struggle with time management, often leading to unfinished tasks and reduced personal growth. This study aimed to examine the implementation and impact of group guidance utilizing time management techniques to improve task-related discipline among santri at Pesantren Al-Asyhar, Central Kalimantan. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through participant observation, interviews, self-report questionnaires, and document analysis involving six purposively selected santri. The findings revealed that structured group guidance sessions significantly improved students’ punctuality in completing tasks, adherence to schedules, and ability to prioritize responsibilities, as reflected in both quantitative gains and qualitative testimonies from teachers and caretakers. Nevertheless, persistent challenges were observed in the area of independent schedule creation, indicating a need for ongoing mentorship. This research contributes a contextually grounded intervention model that integrates pesantren values and local culture, addressing gaps in both national and international literature. The study demonstrates practical benefits for educators, counselors, and policymakers by offering an effective strategy to foster discipline and self-management skills within pesantren and similar educational settings. For future research, it is recommended to investigate the long-term sustainability of such interventions, their scalability to other contexts, the integration of digital tools, and potential variations by gender and age.

Abstract

Many Indonesian junior high school students experience challenges in developing a positive self-concept, often leading to diminished academic motivation and social adaptation. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of sociodrama—a role-play-based experiential learning technique—within an educational context to improve the positive self-concept of seventh-grade students at SMPN 1 Kalibaru. Employing a quantitative quasi-experimental design with a modified equivalent time series framework, the study purposively selected ten students identified with low self-concept for four sociodrama intervention sessions. Pre-test and post-test measurements were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. The findings revealed a statistically significant increase in self-concept scores among all participants (p = 0.005) after the intervention, moving them from a low to a medium self-concept category. These results demonstrate the potential of group-based, experiential interventions in education for fostering self-awareness, confidence, and interpersonal skills during early adolescence. The study's contribution lies in providing robust empirical evidence for the integration of sociodrama in educational counseling practices in Indonesia. Practically, these results suggest that sociodrama can be adopted by school counselors and educators as an effective tool to address students’ psychosocial development needs. Future research is recommended to employ larger and more diverse samples, utilize randomized controlled trials, and explore the long-term effects of such interventions across varied educational settings.

Abstract

Fundamental changes in education driven by digitalization demand that teachers, including guidance and counseling teachers, possess strong digital literacy to remain professionally competent. This study aimed to analyze the level of digital literacy mastery among guidance and counseling teachers at SMP Negeri 3 Ungaran and to evaluate how these skills support their professional competence. Employing a quantitative descriptive approach with saturated sampling, data were collected from all five guidance and counseling teachers at the school using questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and documentation studies. The results revealed that the overall digital literacy mastery was high, with Internet searching (75%) and Content evaluation (64%) being the strongest aspects, while Hypertextual navigation and Knowledge assembly both fell into the medium category (59%). These findings suggest that while digital literacy significantly enhances the professional competence of teachers, particularly in accessing and evaluating information, there are still gaps in advanced navigation and integrative knowledge skills—especially among older teachers. The research contributes practical and theoretical insights by highlighting the importance of targeted digital literacy training and adaptive policy development to optimize counseling services. This study is beneficial for education stakeholders seeking to design effective training programs and improve digital integration in school counseling. Future research is recommended to involve larger samples, apply mixed-method approaches, and examine additional dimensions such as digital ethics, wellbeing, and communication skills to further strengthen the digital competence of educators.

Abstract

The rapid integration of social media platforms—particularly TikTok and its e-commerce feature, TikTokShop—has significantly shaped the consumption patterns of university students, fostering both new opportunities and financial challenges. This study aims to analyze the partial and simultaneous effects of TikTokShop usage and financial management ability on the consumptive behavior of first-year students at Universitas PGRI Argopuro Jember. Employing a quantitative, cross-sectional survey design, data were collected from 95 purposively selected students using validated questionnaires, with analysis conducted via multiple linear regression. The results indicate that while financial management ability has a significant positive effect on consumptive behavior (p < 0.05), TikTokShop usage does not have a significant direct impact. Nonetheless, when combined, both variables account for nearly 70% of the variance in consumptive behavior, underscoring the crucial moderating role of financial management skills in the digital consumption context. The findings highlight that developing financial competence is more effective in promoting responsible spending than merely limiting digital platform use. This research contributes to the literature by isolating TikTokShop as a unique influence and emphasizing applied financial skills over general literacy. The study's practical value lies in its recommendations for higher education to integrate targeted financial management programs within curricula. Future research should examine additional moderating variables such as peer influence and socioeconomic status, and extend the analysis to diverse institutional and demographic contexts.

Abstract

Many junior high school students struggle with low self-regulated learning and ineffective learning strategies, resulting in poor academic achievement and dependence on teacher direction. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of psychoeducational group using symbolic modeling techniques in improving learning strategies among seventh-grade students at SMP Al-Hidayah Wuluhan. Employing a true experimental pre-test post-test control group design, eight purposively selected students were divided into experimental and control groups. The intervention consisted of six psychoeducational group sessions using symbolic modeling via videos and pictorial media, while the control group received no additional treatment. Data were collected using a 30-item learning strategies questionnaire and counselor observations, then analyzed with descriptive statistics and inferential tests (paired sample t-test, independent samples t-test, and Wilcoxon test). The results showed a statistically significant increase in learning strategy scores in the experimental group (mean improvement: 2.30 to 3.95, p < 0.01, large effect size), particularly in study scheduling, resource selection, and metacognitive monitoring. The control group showed no significant change. The findings confirm that symbolic modeling, when embedded in psychoeducational group, accelerates the acquisition of adaptive learning behaviors and promotes student self-regulation. This research extends Bandura’s social cognitive theory by demonstrating the effectiveness of symbolic modeling for cognitive strategy development. The study offers practical implications for integrating digital media in school counseling and recommends further research with larger and more diverse samples to explore long-term effects and optimize implementation.

Abstract

Academic burnout among final-year university students is a critical issue, particularly for those balancing thesis completion with part-time employment and personal challenges. This study explores the role of existential-humanistic counseling in alleviating academic burnout experienced by students in the Guidance and Counseling Program at Universitas PGRI Argopuro Jember. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through semi-structured interviews, observation, and documentation involving ten final-year students showing symptoms of burnout. Thematic analysis revealed three key themes: awareness of burnout, the impact of burnout on mental and academic well-being, and coping strategies. Findings showed that students experienced emotional exhaustion, motivation decline, and behavioral changes such as procrastination and social withdrawal. Coping mechanisms ranged from mindfulness and cognitive reframing to social engagement and creative activities. Existential-humanistic counseling was found to support students by fostering self-awareness, emotional resilience, and personal meaning, offering a deeper and culturally relevant alternative to conventional behavioral models. The study underscores the need for integrative counseling practices that address existential dimensions of student crises. It contributes to educational psychology and counseling practice by demonstrating how personal responsibility and meaning-making can transform burnout into an opportunity for growth. Future research should include diverse academic contexts and incorporate mixed-method designs to enhance generalizability and rigor.
