Abstract

Phonology is an important aspect of learning English as a foreign language, especially for beginners. Understanding the English sound system not only helps improve pronunciation, but also strengthens listening and speaking skills. However, many students experience difficulties due to the phonological differences between their native language and English. This article aims to present effective strategies in teaching phonology based on recent findings. The method used is a literature study by analyzing various relevant literature sources. The results show that strategic approaches such as the use of AI-based technology, minimal pair practice, articulation visualization, as well as providing continuous feedback can significantly improve students' phonological awareness. Other strategies such as reading rhyming poems, singing rhyming songs, and sound manipulation exercises also play an important role in helping students recognize and produce sounds better. With targeted and needs-based phonology teaching, communication skills in English can be effectively improved.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of free educational websites in improving phonological awareness in young children. Using a qualitative-descriptive approach, we analyzed several freely accessible platforms and their use in classroom and home learning settings. Findings show that websites such as Starfall, English Sound, and BBC Learning English contribute positively to children's sound recognition and phoneme segmentation. This study recommends the integration of such tools in the early language curriculum.

Abstract

This article examines the critical role of phonology in second language acquisition and provides practical strategies for integrating phonological awareness into language learning. Drawing on research findings and classroom experiences, the article offers practical tips for educators and learners, including techniques for improving pronunciation, developing auditory discrimination, and cultivating phonological memory. Emphasis is placed on a learner-centered approach and the importance of contextualized practice. The insights presented aim to bridge theory and practice, offering accessible and effective tools for improving language proficiency through phonological competence.

Abstract

Phonology is a linguistic branch that studies the sound system in a language. In English, phonological rules are very important to understand so that pronunciation and understanding of meaning do not experience distortion. However, for English learners as a foreign language (EFL), including English tadris students in north Sumatra UIN (UINSU), the appclication of phonological rules is often a challenge. This is caused by differences in the sound system between Indonesian and English and lack of exposure to native speakers. This article aims to analyze the extent to which UINSU English Tadris students understand and apply phonological rules in English, and identify common mistakes that occur

Abstract

This study explores the role of suprasegmental features, particularly intonation patterns, in English phonology. While segmental features like vowels and consonants have received extensive attention in linguistic research, suprasegmentals, including intonation, stress, rhythm, and pauses, are often less emphasized despite their critical role in shaping communication. Intonation, as a key suprasegmental feature, helps convey meaning, emotional tone, and grammatical structure in spoken English. This paper discusses how intonation patterns not only differentiate sentence types (e.g., statements vs. questions) but also express emotions and attitudes. Furthermore, it highlights the significance of understanding intonation in intercultural communication, where variations in pitch patterns can lead to misunderstandings. The paper concludes by emphasizing the need for further research on suprasegmentals and their application in language learning and speech technology.

Abstract

Many Indonesian learners of English face significant challenges in achieving spoken fluency, even after years of formal study. This paper investigates the phonological roots of this struggle, analyzing how differences between the sound systems of Indonesian and English—such as vowel inventories, consonant clusters, and stress-timing—create barriers to intelligibility. Observations fromEFL classrooms reveal that learners often avoid speaking due to anxiety about mispronunciation, while instruction tends to prioritize grammar over phonology. Through a contrastive analysis, this study identifies common interference patterns (e.g., substitution of English /θ/ with /t/, syllable-timed rhythm) and proposes pedagogical interventions, including phonemic awareness drills, targeted listening practice, and communicative activities designed to build confidence. The findings argue for integrating explicit phonological training into EFL curricula to help learners bridge the gap between "knowing" and "speaking" English.

Abstract

This study looks at the English sound system from a phonological standpoint, emphasizing successful teaching strategies and the difficulties non-native speakers have pronouncing words correctly. This study examines the effects of native language interference, identifies particular phonological challenges, and assesses instructional methods for improving pronunciation using qualitative research with fourth-semester English education students. The results show that although explicit phonetic teaching greatly helps pupils, they still struggle to manage spelling-pronunciation inconsistencies and discern vowel lengths. By offering insights into phonological learning processes and suggesting evidence-based teaching strategies, the research advances the field of applied linguistics. Although individual sound distinctions require tailored treatments, the results show that systematic pronunciation education improves student confidence and communicative skills.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the differences and similarities in the phonological systems of English and Javanese through a contrastive study approach among students of the English Education Department at UIN Sumatera Utara Medan. Using a qualitative descriptive method, data were collected through interviews, classroom observations, and pronunciation recordings. The results indicate significant phonological differences, especially in the articulation of /θ/, /ð/, and long vowels in English, which do not exist in the Javanese phonological system. These differences result in phonological interference that affects students’ English pronunciation. The findings underline the need for phonological awareness in English language instruction, particularly for learners with regional language backgrounds.
