TARUNATEACH: Journal of Elementary School is a double-blind peer-reviewed journal published by the Study Program of Pendidikan Guru Madrasah Ibtidaiyah (PGMI), Sekolah Tinggi Agama Islam Taruna Surabaya, Indonesia. The journal publishes research articles on Islamic primary education or primary education in Islamic countries. The articles of this journal are published bi-annually in March and September. The focus of this journal contains articles on research on Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Teacher Education/Primary/MI/SD, such as competency analysis, learning strategies, learning theory, learning development, educator professionalism, and research results. Abstract

Reading and writing skills are essential foundational abilities in primary education; however, not all students are able to master them optimally. This study aims to analyze basic literacy difficulties in a second-grade elementary student using a phoneme-grapheme approach and reviewed through cognitive, social, and behaviorist learning theories. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method with data collection techniques consisting of diagnostic tests and interviews. Five types of tests were administered to assess the student’s ability to recognize letter sounds, letter symbols, match sounds with letters, copy letters, and write letters from dictated sounds. The results showed that the student was able to recognize all letter sounds well but experienced significant difficulties in identifying letter symbols, matching sounds to letters, and writing them independently. The student demonstrated ability only with letters memorized by rote, particularly those found in their own name. Interviews also revealed that the student felt shy, lacked self-confidence, and showed low interest in reading and writing activities. These findings indicate that the student’s literacy difficulties stem from a weak phoneme-grapheme connection, compounded by cognitive limitations, minimal social interaction in learning, and low motivation. Therefore, an individualized, multisensory, and contextual learning approach is needed to support the student in developing literacy skills more effectively.

Abstract

The learning of Natural Sciences (IPA) in Madrasah Ibtidaiyah (MI) plays an important role in shaping students' understanding of natural phenomena and scientific concepts. However, misconceptions are still found among students regarding the IPA material being studied. This study aims to identify concepts, theories, laws, and scientific facts in IPA learning and to understand the causes and forms of misconceptions that occur at MI Hidayatun Najah Tuban. The method used is qualitative with data collection techniques in the form of observation and interviews. The results of the study show that the use of cooperative learning methods, practical media, and the environment as learning resources can improve students' understanding, although misconceptions are still found in aspects of collaboration and students' conceptual understanding. These findings indicate the importance of the teacher's role in accompanying students and choosing a contextual approach to reduce misconceptions.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze student activeness in science learning at MI Plus Wildan Assyifa using the Project Based Learning (PjBL) model. The focus is to obtain in-depth information about the level of student activeness as a reference for teachers, as well as to offer updates from previous studies that rarely highlight aspects of student activeness specifically. The research method used is qualitative with a narrative approach. Qualitative research emphasizes the quality and meaning behind the phenomenon, while the narrative approach is used to tell individual or group experiences through documentation and personal analysis. The results of the study showed a significant increase in student activeness after the implementation of PjBL integrated with the simulation method. Measurement of activeness was carried out through observation, interviews, and documentation, which included the stages of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. Students showed active involvement in preparing project schedules, bringing materials, and collaborating in working on the volcanic eruption simulation task. The teacher managed to overcome the challenges of attracting students' attention and limited facilities with creativity and the use of simple materials, without complaints from parents. This method not only improves understanding of the material, but also forms student character such as responsibility, discipline, self-confidence, and curiosity. Students become more enthusiastic, interactive, and able to overcome learning boredom. Teachers feel motivated to see the positive responses of students and consider this method to have a broad impact on the science learning process, creating a more lively and dynamic classroom atmosphere.

Abstract

Science education at the Madrasah Ibtidaiyah (MI) level plays a crucial role in fostering critical thinking skills, scientific attitudes, and a fundamental understanding of scientific concepts from an early age. However, challenges such as limited facilities, diverse student characteristics, and the need to integrate Islamic values into the curriculum affect the effectiveness of science learning, particularly at MI Miftahur Rohmah Tasikharjo. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of using the experimental method and the cooperative learning model STAD (Student Teams Achievement Division) in improving student learning outcomes. This research employed a qualitative approach, utilizing data collection techniques through direct classroom observation and structured interviews with teachers and students. The data obtained were analyzed to determine the impact of implementing the experimental method and STAD model on students' conceptual understanding and active participation in science learning. The findings reveal that the experimental method enhances students’ understanding of science concepts through hands-on activities, observation, and independent conclusion drawing. This supports the constructivist theory, which emphasizes the active role of learners in constructing knowledge. Meanwhile, the application of the STAD model proved effective in improving teamwork, individual responsibility, and student motivation through group discussions and positive competition.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of Tangram media on improving students' creative thinking skills in mathematics subjects in grade V. The method used in this study is a quasi-experimental method (Quasi-Experimental Design) more specifically Pretest-Posttest Control Group Design. After the data is collected, the hypothesis testing is carried out using a two-sample independent t-test or Independent Samples t-test. The sample in this study was taken using a purposive sampling technique, with class V A as the experimental class using Tangram media and class V B as the control class not using additional media. The results of this study indicate that Based on the results of SPSS version 20 calculations, the parametric hypothesis test with the Independent Samples t-test obtained a Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.000 <0.05, then as the basis for decision making in the independent sample t-test it can be concluded that  is rejected and   is accepted, which means that there is a significant influence between the use of tangram media on improving students' creative thinking skills.

Abstract

This study aims to optimize the learning outcomes of 6th grade students in Natural Sciences (IPA) at SDN Malunda, Sasende Environment, by implementing the Jigsaw cooperative learning approach. The background of this study is the low active participation and academic achievement of students in the conventional learning process. The method used is Classroom Action Research (CAR) for two cycles, involving 13 students. Each cycle includes planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. Data collection techniques are carried out through observation, documentation, and evaluation of learning outcomes. Before the implementation of Jigsaw, only 46% of students achieved completeness. This figure increased to 85% in cycle I, and reached 100% in cycle II. In addition, student activity in groups and understanding of the material also increased. These results indicate that the Jigsaw strategy is effective in building an interactive, collaborative, and meaningful learning atmosphere.

Abstract

Curriculum development in education is a complex and continuous process aimed at designing an effective learning plan for students. Principles in curriculum development, such as responsiveness to student needs, relevance to the demands of the times, inclusivity, and stakeholder participation, serve as the foundation for determining the direction and objectives of the curriculum. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach, utilizing data from relevant literature to investigate the implementation of these principles in curriculum development. The results show that the implementation of an inclusive curriculum responsive to the demands of the times faces several challenges, including student diversity, the relevance of the curriculum to technological advancements, and alignment with societal expectations. Collaborative efforts from various stakeholders are necessary to continuously improve the curriculum to meet students' needs more effectively, enabling them to face future challenges more effectively.

Abstract

The principles of Civic Education play a crucial role in shaping students' character and equipping the younger generation with the necessary knowledge to navigate current and future societal challenges and interactions. This research seeks to explore and explain the core values of Civic Education, its practical application in enhancing 21st-century citizenship competencies, and the various factors that either support or hinder its implementation at MI Al-Ittihad. A qualitative method with a case study design was employed in this study. Data collection techniques included observation, interviews, and documentation, followed by analysis through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that Civic Education values extend beyond fostering awareness of citizens' rights and responsibilities, but also form superior character through religious, socio- cultural, physical-spiritual, and intelligence values (substantive, operational, innovative), social-cultural personal, social, and social-political personal. Its implementation is carried out through daily habituation, extracurricular activities, and school programs that support the improvement of student citizenship. The supporting factors include teacher support, curriculum, infrastructure, and a conducive school environment. The obstacles include obstacles in controlling the use of gadgets, the influence of the social environment, and sometimes there is an imbalance between learning materials and practices.

Abstract

This study analyzes the Characteristics and Media of Science Learning in Grade 4 of MI Al-Hidayah. This study uses a qualitative research type using observation and interview methods. The study results indicate that in MI Al-Hidayah Gesikharjo in science learning in fourth grade, the learning characteristics applied are contextual and the learning media often used are Pictures, Spinner, and LKS. From this study, it can be concluded that the characteristics of science learning in MI AL-Hidayah are contextual and interactive, while the learning media used are pictures/posters, Spinners, and students’ worksheets.

Abstract

This study aims to improve students' learning outcomes on the topic of weather in first grade at SD Muhammadiyah through the use of flipchart learning media. Primary education plays a crucial role in developing students' character and abilities, and understanding weather is essential for environmental awareness. However, students often face difficulties in grasping abstract concepts. Therefore, an innovative approach to teaching is necessary. This Classroom Action Research (CAR) was conducted to explore the effectiveness of flipchart media in enhancing students' understanding. The methods used include observation, interviews, and evaluation of learning outcomes. The results show that the use of flipcharts can increase student engagement and facilitate understanding of weather material. In the first cycle, student learning completeness reached 69.23%, while in the second cycle it increased to 88.46%. This study is expected to make a significant contribution to the development of more effective and innovative teaching methods at SD Muhammadiyah and serve as a reference for educators in improving the quality of education. Thus, the application of appropriate learning media can create a more dynamic and interactive learning environment, as well as encourage students to think critically and creatively.
