Abstract

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of story-based learning in enhancing English writing skills among Grade 7 students at SMP Negeri 4 Gerung. Writing, a critical productive skill in language learning, is often perceived as challenging due to its demand for clarity, coherence, and mastery of language components such as grammar and vocabulary. Many students struggle with writing due to limited practice, inadequate teaching methods, and low motivation. Story-based learning offers a potential solution by providing an engaging and context-rich environment that encourages students to develop their writing skills. This research focuses on addressing the identified challenges by utilizing stories as a medium to increase student interest and motivation. The findings showed that students in the experimental group, who were taught using story-based learning, experienced a significant improvement of 23.19% in their writing skills, as evidenced by their post-test scores. In contrast, the control group, which followed traditional teaching methods, showed only a marginal improvement of 0.79%. These results indicate that story-based learning not only enhances student engagement and interest in the learning process but also fosters creativity and critical thinking, leading to improved writing performance.

Abstract

This research examines the effects of group discussions as a teaching method on improving students' basic oral communication skills, focusing on their perceptions, challenges, and outcomes. Conducted with 36 eleventh-grade students at SMAN 1 Gerung, this study utilized a mixed methods research design. Data was collected through a structured questionnaire, which included both closed-ended and open-ended questions to provide comprehensive insights. The findings reveal that group discussions have a significant positive effect on students’ speaking skills, particularly in vocabulary acquisition, fluency, pronunciation, and comprehension. In addition, group discussions encouraged active participation and engagement. However, challenges such as limited discussion time, nervousness, and unequal participation among students were also identified. Based on these findings, it is recommended that group discussions be integrated more frequently into speaking lessons. Deeper insights may be obtained for future studies by increasing the sample size and incorporating different teaching strategies, like project-based learning or digital tools. In general, this study highlights how group discussions enhance students' oral communication abilities in English classes.

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to investigate the impact of using English subtitles from Western child-friendly movies on students' English vocabulary. This research was experimental research and implemented a pre-test post-test group design. The sample of thsi research was the students from 9th grade students of SMP 1 Praya which consisted of 50 students. This research used observation and test as the research instruments. The result of this research showed that the independent sample t-test revealed a significance (2-tailed) value of 0.000. Since this value is less than the standard threshold of 0.05, it indicates that the difference between the mean scores of the control and experimental classes is statistically significant. This finding confirms that the observed variation in scores is unlikely to have occurred by random chance. Therefore, it can be concluded that the intervention applied to the experimental class using English subtitles in Western child-friendly movies had a substantial and measurable impact on improving students’ vocabulary proficiency compared to the traditional teaching methods employed in the control class. These findings highlight the effectiveness of using English subtitles in Western child-friendly movies as a teaching tool for improving vocabulary. The experimental class's significant improvement compared to the control class's limited progress underscores the potential of innovative methods over traditional teaching approaches in enhancing students’ English vocabulary proficiency.

The results of this study show that students have a positive view of using YouTube as a learning resource to improve their English-speaking skills and the perception is influenced by internal factors and external factors from the students. The findings indicate that the students' characteristics and the features of YouTube contribute to the enhancement of English-speaking skills. However, while the majority of the students view YouTube positively as a tool for enhancing their English-speaking abilities, a minority has an opposing perspective.  Therefore, it is recommended that future research explore the long-term impact of YouTube on speaking proficiency and evaluate specific content types. Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effect of using retelling techniques on students’ vocabulary mastery among second-grade students at MAN Lombok Barat. A quasi-experimental research design was employed, involving two groups: an experimental group that received instruction through the retelling technique and a control group that was taught using conventional methods. The population consisted of all second-grade students, while the sample included two classes selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using pre-test and post-test assessments to measure changes in vocabulary mastery. The results indicated a significant improvement in the experimental group’s vocabulary performance, with an average post-test score of 71.84, compared to the control group’s score of 62.08. The paired sample t-test analysis revealed a t-value of 3.583, which is higher than the critical t-table value of 2.069, leading to the acceptance of the alternative hypothesis (Ha) and rejection of the null hypothesis (H₀). These findings align with previous studies by Mursilah (2016), Nursanti (2014), and Fadilaturrahmah (2022), which also reported that retelling techniques enhance students’ language skills, particularly vocabulary acquisition and comprehension. Moreover, this result supports the theoretical framework proposed by Idayani & Fitri (2021), who emphasized the effectiveness of retelling in creating a more interactive and student-centered learning environment. In conclusion, the retelling technique has a significant positive impact on students’ vocabulary mastery. Therefore, it is recommended for English teachers as an engaging and effective strategy to improve vocabulary learning outcomes.

Abstract

This research investigates the significant effect of using phonetic-based materials, particularly the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), in teaching pronunciation skills to eleventh-grade students at SMAN 1 Mataram. Employing a quasi-experimental design with a one-group pre-test and post-test model, the study involved 32 students from class XIF MIPA-6. Data were collected through pronunciation assessments using the Elsa Speak application, which analyzed students’ performance before and after treatment. The treatment consisted of structured lessons integrating phonetic symbols and guided practice across four meetings. The statistical analysis using a paired sample t-test showed a significant difference between pre-test and post-test scores (t = 2.275 > t-table = 2.040, α = 0.05), indicating that phonetic-based materials positively affected students’ pronunciation skills. Despite the modest increase in mean scores (from 75.8 to 76.5), the improvement was statistically significant. The study concludes that the integration of phonetic-based materials is an effective approach to enhance English pronunciation among EFL students.
