Abstract

A common issue faced in the English study program is students' lack of understanding in listening, as evidenced by low scores in the listening section of the TOEFL test. Additionally, students often engage in activities requiring strong listening skills to comprehend speakers and interact effectively with others. To address this, researchers have chosen Spotify as a tool for enhancing listening skills due to its accessibility at any time and place. This study aimed to explore students' perceptions and development while using Spotify for listening practice. Utilizing qualitative methods and purposive sampling, as only a few students use Spotify, the findings revealed that most respondents strongly agreed or agreed that Spotify is an effective medium for improving their listening skills. Positive feedback from interview responses further supports the idea that Spotify is a suitable tool for listening practice. The study's results indicate that respondents have a positive perception of Spotify as a medium for listening practice, as it offers a wide variety of songs and podcasts across different genres. Respondents predominantly agreed that Spotify helps improve their English skills, particularly in listening and vocabulary, while also providing a comfortable and motivating environment for learning.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the effectiveness of Grammarly feedback on students' progress in argumentative writing. Grammarly is an online automated writing evaluation tool that focuses on giving feedback on the language used in any type of writing. The tool was used in argumentative writing courses for 34 third-semester students at a state university in Mataram. The research used a descriptive qualitative method to collect data on the students' perceptions. The data was collected using validated questionnaires with a four-point Likert scale and supported by interviews. The findings show that students generally had positive perceptions of Grammarly. They found it effective for identifying and correcting errors in their writing, especially in grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure. They considered the correctness feature to be the most helpful. Additionally, they believed that using Grammarly improved their motivation and grammatical competence in argumentative writing. However, some participants had negative perceptions of Grammarly's weaknesses, particularly in providing feedback on the arrangement of thesis statements, counter-arguments, and the use of evidence in argumentative writing.

Moreover, there is no significant difference in the extent of awareness of the respondents across year level about the socio-affective domain of language learning (0.966 F-value and 0.388 p-value); and there is a significant difference in the speaking proficiency across year level (5.783 F-value and 0.006 p-value). Lastly, it was revealed that there is a significant relationship between the extent of awareness of the respondents about the socio-affective domain of language learning and their speaking proficiency level (r-value of 0.329 and a p-value of 0.017). The researchers recommended that continuous language exposure must still be given importance. Additionally, the active participation of the learners, language teachers, and the school community is pivotal in the language learning of the learners. Multifarious activities inside of the school such as English organization, theatre and debate club, workshops, and school broadcasting club are also recommended.

Abstract

This study analyzes the influence of translation techniques on the accuracy of the interpretation of Louisa May Alcott's novel "Little Women". The three translation techniques analyzed are literal translation, idiomatic translation, and dynamic equivalence. This study uses a qualitative method with a content analysis approach from the novel “Little Women”. This method was chosen to explore in depth how translation techniques affect the accuracy of interpretation in the translated novel. These findings emphasize the importance of choosing the right translation technique to maintain the integrity of literary interpretation. This study also highlights the importance of considering cultural and social contexts in the process of translating literary texts. It was found that a deep understanding of the author's original culture is essential to produce an accurate and meaningful translation. In addition, this study recommends that translators have strong linguistic and literary skills to be able to transfer the nuances and meanings contained in the original text into their translations. The findings of this study can be a valuable guide for translators and researchers in understanding the complexity of translation techniques and their impact on the interpretation of literary texts.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the effect of the Kampus Mengajar program on pre-service teachers’ teaching competencies. In this study, the data collection technique used was semi-structured interviews, where semi-structured interviews are interviews that combine structured interviews and unstructured interviews. Based on the research question, what is the effect of the Kampus Mengajar program on pre-service teachers' teaching competencies. In this study, 15 interviewees who had participated in the Kampus Mengajar program were taken, and they were given interview questions regarding 4 aspects of teaching competence: pedagogic, personality, professional, and social. The research findings show that the results of interviews conducted with 15 interviewees show that the percentage of interviewees who answered “YES” to 17 questions regarding 4 aspects of teaching competence is more dominant than those who answered “NO”, namely 12 people out of 17 questions with a percentage of 100%, which shows that the Kampus Mengajar program has a positive effect on pre-service teachers’ teaching competencies. The Kampus Mengajar program significantly enhances prospective teachers' teaching competence by providing hands-on experience, improving pedagogical, personal, professional, and social skills essential for effective teaching. Participants reported gains in lesson planning, learning evaluation, empathetic behavior, mastery of subject matter, and collaborative teaching. However, challenges such as limited evaluation experience, short interaction periods, and difficulties with curriculum mastery highlight areas for improvement to maximize the program's impact.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the learning strategies used by students in acquiring vocabulary through TikTok, the hurdles that they face, and how they overcome them utilizing the Oxford’s (1990) theory. This study is designed to use a qualitative descriptive method. The majority of the data in this study are collected through focus group discussions (FGDs), questionnaires, interviews, and documentation. The subjects of this study consist 66 of eighth-grade students at SMPN 1 Mataram who use TikTok for vocabulary acquisition. The analysis reveals that the overall use of learning strategies in acquiring vocabulary through TikTok is at a medium level, with an average score of 2.73. The most frequently used strategy is the affective strategy, with an average score of 3.06. Meanwhile the least utilized strategy is the social strategy, with an average score of 2.04. Other strategies include memory (3.05), cognitive (2.87), compensation (2.87), and metacognitive strategies (2.52). Furthermore, the findings indicate that the most common hurdles faced by students include difficulties in understanding vocabulary, reported by 30% of the students, followed by a lack of detailed explanations (20%), variability in content quality (18%), and inaccurate subtitles (14%). Students primarily overcome these hurdles by using additional tools (27%), followed by asking experts (18%), repeating videos (15%), and seeking other videos (11%). The implications of these findings suggest that enhancing students’ awareness of effective learning strategies and improving content quality could significantly benefit vocabulary acquisition through digital platforms.

Abstract

In the era of global competition, enhancing English language skills is critical, and project-based learning (PjBL) presents a potential model to improve student engagement and language competence. This qualitative case study, conducted at SMPN 1 Jonggat in Central Lombok, Nusa Tenggara Barat, examines English teachers' perceptions of PjBL, focusing on its effectiveness, challenges, and implementation strategies. Using a purposive sample of three English teachers who employ PjBL in their classrooms, data were collected through semi-structured interviews and close-ended questionnaires to capture detailed insights into teachers' attitudes and experiences with PjBL. Semi-structured interviews allowed for in-depth exploration of teachers' subjective experiences, while questionnaires provided structured data on specific aspects of PjBL’s implementation. Data were analyzed following Miles and Huberman's three-step process—data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification—to systematically interpret findings. This study contributes valuable insights for educators seeking to enhance English language teaching through PjBL, offering a framework for understanding both the benefits and challenges of PjBL from teachers’ perspectives in a secondary school context. Findings are expected to support improved teaching strategies and contribute to more effective English education practices.
