Abstract

This study investigates the difficulties faced by university students in writing essays, particularly in the context of English education in Indonesia. The research identified key challenges such as limited vocabulary, anxiety, time constraints, and difficulty in organizing ideas. Through a quantitative approach that included an online distributed survey, this study collected data on students' experiences and perceptions of their writing skills. The results showed that many students experienced difficulties in various aspects of writing, including grammar and coherence, which often led to a lack of confidence and motivation. The findings highlight the need for better teaching strategies to improve students' writing skills. Recommendations include providing intensive guidance during the writing process, implementing project-based learning, and utilizing technology to support learning. In addition, fostering a supportive environment where students can freely explore topics of interest is essential to motivate them to write effectively. Overall, this study underscores the importance of overcoming skill-based and psychological barriers to improve academic writing proficiency among students in the digital age.

Abstract

Learning English for VHS students should be directed at mastering the ability to use English for communication in their respective fields. However, field observations show that the ability to use English remains a challenge for most VHS students due to various obstacles. This study aims to develop an innovative teaching module model to support the implementation of teaching English for Vocational Schools (TEVHS). This is qualitative reserach using survey method. It was conducted at VHS in Mataram Lombok, involving 23 English teachers from VHS English Teachers’ Forum (MGMP VHS). The data were collected using triangulation techniques such as a questionnaire, focus group discussion (FGD), ducummentary. The collected data were then analyzed qualitatively using Miles & Hubbermen’s Model consisting of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. Based on the analysis, the conclusions are as follows: (1) English learning for VHS students needs to be reconstructed to meet the demands of the workforce. With the diverse requirements of various occupations, the design of TEVHS must be based on the English for Specific Purposes (ESP) approach; (2) TEVHS must be designed to instill communication skills by providing various inputs from receptive skills (Listening, Reading, and Viewing) which can be used as models for language production (Speaking, Reading, Presenting). To enhance innovation in learning, it is recommended that the design of TEVHS integrate such approach and model as ESP, Whole-Part-Whole, and TPACK to overcome various problems.

Abstract

This study was a stylistic analysis aimed at delineating the different social predicaments embedded in the ten (10) song compositions of GLOC-9. Particularly, it sought to: (1) identify the linguistic levels used in cascading the message and style of the songs along with semantics, lexicogrammar, phonology, and acoustic phonetics; (2) determine the stylistic devices under figures of speech used in the songs; (3) define the thematic levels presented in the songs along with the thematic concept and thematic statement; (4) specify the values or morals conveyed in the songs; and (5) discuss the social predicaments embedded in the songs. To further strategize the data gathering, the researchers used the Hallidayan Systemic-Functional Linguistic Theory in order to extract the different linguistic levels in the songs. Thus, the researchers found out that the social predicaments embedded in the song compositions that depicted social realities were: (1) social injustice; (2) violence; (3) prostitution; (4) drug addiction; (5) corruption; (6) gender discrimination; (7) killing; (8) poverty; and (9) brain drain mentality. Ergo, the results being demarcated in this study may help cultivate social awareness and provide positive implications in terms of transcending the minds of every Filipino, which is a crucial determinant in society and more especially in that of the nation.

Abstract

A number of studies comparing the performances of two different machine translators have been widely carried out, but the study of it involving Sundanese language is still scant and needs to be developed. This present study serves to compare the Indonesian-to-Sundanese translations for a short story performed by Google Translate (GT) and Kamus-Sunda (KS). Data were obtained from their Sundanese translations of five-paragraph Indonesian folklore entitled Lutung Kasarung. Furthermore, a number of theoretical frameworks regarding machine translations were used to help analyze the data qualitatively. In general, the findings demonstrate that both GT and KS share a number of similarities and differences in the light of five aspects; (1) improper characters’ names, (2) improper target language, (3) the use of speech level, (4) shifts in meaning, and (5) improper sentence structure. Drawing a brief conclusion, this study found that KS makes less errors rather than GT does, so it can be stated that KS performs better than GT in translating the story.

Abstract

This article examines the usefulness of the Cake App in students’ English vocabulary learning. A mixed-methods approach was used to collect data regarding 121 respondents, and questionnaires and interviews were used accordingly, which aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the Cake App in improving English vocabulary. The findings suggest that the Cake app is a potential tool for vocabulary development since many users reported having enjoyable experiences and making considerable vocabulary increases. The interview findings indicate that users exhibit increased confidence in using new terminology after consistent practice with the interactive aspects of the Cake program. The use of repetition-based learning techniques and contextualization in the films enhanced users' retention of newly acquired vocabulary. Conversely, other limitations were identified, including the lack of a structured curriculum and the significance of video resources. Several users also experienced technical difficulties, including reliance on a steady internet connection. The study results suggest that while the Cake App has the potential to contribute to vocabulary development, more improvements are necessary to maximize its effectiveness as a tool for language learning. The interviews showed that the majority of users deemed the word repetition and speaking practice elements beneficial, improving their comprehension and confidence in using new language. Several users stated that the app assisted them with academic assignments and daily conversations. Nonetheless, there are several challenges were also recognized. Some users saw the app's information as occasionally monotonous particularly owing to the extensive materials provided without a defined learning framework. Moreover, technological limitations pose a significant barrier, particularly for those with limited internet usage or unreliable connections. Several participants said that they are prone to forgetting the stuff they have learned if it is not promptly documented. Consequently, the implementation of an automated note-taking tool or offline mode might enhance the app's efficacy for users seeking to optimize their learning results. These enhancements would not only optimize the Cake App’s effectiveness but also position it as a more comprehensive and structured tool for digital language learning.
