Abstract

This study explores the ecotourism potential of the Bhadrika Mangrove Tourism Park in Bengkulu, Indonesia, with the aim of assessing its attractiveness as a sustainable tourism destination that can contribute to both environmental conservation and local economic development. The research was conducted in July-August 2020, utilizing a mixed-methods approach that combined field observations and semi-structured interviews with local stakeholders, community members, and visitors. The data were analyzed using descriptive methods and the Scenic Beauty Estimation (SBE) technique to evaluate the aesthetic appeal of the park’s mangrove ecosystems. The results revealed that the park’s diverse mangrove species, river estuaries, and coastal landscapes offer significant potential for educational and recreational tourism activities. Key attractions include guided tours, photography zones, children’s play areas, and local food vendors. The study also highlighted strong community support for ecotourism, with local residents expressing interest in participating in tourism-related activities and benefiting from increased job opportunities. Despite the promising potential, the study identified several challenges, including the need for infrastructure improvements and the importance of maintaining a balance between tourism growth and ecological preservation. This research contributes to the growing body of knowledge on mangrove ecotourism by providing a detailed case study of a lesser-known mangrove site in Indonesia. The findings suggest that with appropriate management, the Bhadrika Mangrove Tourism Park could serve as a model for sustainable ecotourism in coastal regions, promoting both conservation and community empowerment.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has rapidly transformed global education systems, pushing institutions toward online learning. This study explores the effectiveness of WhatsApp as an e-learning tool for the Biomolecules and Metabolism course in the Tadris IPA Program at IAIN Bengkulu during the pandemic. A mixed-methods approach, including a survey and semi-structured interviews, was employed to assess students' perceptions of WhatsApp's usability, its impact on engagement, and its effectiveness in facilitating learning. The findings show that WhatsApp was widely regarded as user-friendly, cost-effective, and accessible even in areas with weak internet connectivity. A majority of students (90%) reported that WhatsApp helped reduce data usage compared to other platforms, making it a more viable option for online learning. Moreover, WhatsApp’s group chat, document sharing, and audio message features significantly enhanced student engagement and participation. This study highlights the potential of WhatsApp as an alternative e-learning tool, particularly in resource-constrained environments. The novelty of this research lies in its focus on using WhatsApp in a specialized science course, contributing to the understanding of how mobile messaging platforms can support higher education in the post-pandemic era. The results suggest that WhatsApp can be a valuable tool for improving learning outcomes in science courses, though further research is needed to address challenges related to information overload and synchronous learning limitations.

Abstract

Assessment is a measuring tool used in mastery of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) in environmental materials. Research on the development of this assessment instrument aims to determine the feasibility of assessing Higher Order Thinking Skills on environmental materials in SMA Surakarta. Research on the development of the Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) assessment using the Research and Development (R&D) model refers to the modified Borg and Gall (1983). The sample to test the feasibility of the assessment includes 2 expert validators, namely material experts and evaluation instrument experts. The function of material experts and evaluation instrument experts is to validate the suitability of questions with indicators (construct validity) so as to ensure that the questions developed can measure students' Higher Order Thinking Skills. The results of the material expert validation show that the average score of all aspects of the material is 100% in the "Very Good" category. The results of the evaluation instrument expert validation show that the average score of all aspects of the material is 80.95% in the "Good" category, so that the Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) assessment on environmental material is considered feasible to be tested in the limited test group or field tests on students.

Abstract

This study aims to develop and validate a two-tier multiple choice (TTMCQ) instrument to measure senior high school students’ science process skills (SPS) in acid-base chemistry. Following Borg and Gall’s modified research and development design (nine stages), the instrument was developed, validated, and tested in two public high schools in Bengkulu, Indonesia. Validation involved content experts, assessment specialists, and experienced chemistry teachers. Field trials were conducted with 119 students, and data were analyzed for validity, reliability, item difficulty, and discrimination indices. Results show that the TTMCQ instrument demonstrated strong validity, high reliability, appropriate difficulty distribution (53% easy, 42% medium, 5% difficult), and sufficient discriminating power. Teachers reported positive perceptions, noting that the instrument effectively challenges students’ reasoning and enhances their SPS. The study highlights the potential of TTMCQ instruments as practical tools for formative and summative assessment in science education.

Abstract

Improving teacher performance has become a central concern in educational research, as teacher effectiveness is strongly linked to student achievement and the overall quality of schooling. This study aimed to investigate the influence of principals’ leadership style and teachers’ work motivation on teacher performance in junior secondary schools in Sungai Rotan District, Indonesia. Employing a quantitative correlational design, data were collected from 98 teachers using a structured questionnaire that measured leadership style, work motivation, and teacher performance, with validity and reliability established through expert review, factor analysis, and Cronbach’s alpha. Data analysis was conducted using multiple linear regression with SPSS. The results indicated that both leadership style and work motivation had significant positive effects on teacher performance, with work motivation showing a stronger influence, while the combined model explained 34.3% of the variance in teacher performance. The discussion suggests that principals who demonstrate supportive leadership practices can enhance teachers’ intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, which in turn improves their instructional planning, classroom management, and professional responsibility. This study contributes novelty by examining the simultaneous influence of leadership and motivation in the Indonesian junior secondary school context, a relationship that has been underexplored in prior research. The findings imply that effective leadership development and motivational support are essential strategies for policymakers and educational practitioners seeking to improve teacher performance and strengthen school effectiveness in developing country contexts.
