Abstract

The results of observations and interviews with Biology teachers of class X3 MA Maarif Sukorejo showed that the current learning method is not effective in improving critical thinking skills and students’ cognitive learning outcomes. This study applies a guided inquiry model combined with Numbered Heads Together (N.H.T.) to improve this. This classroom action research was conducted in two cycles, each with three meetings. The subjects of the study were all students of class X3. Critical thinking ability data were collected through descriptive tests while learning outcomes included end-of-cycle tests (cognitive) and psychomotor skill observations. The study's findings showed a significant increase in critical thinking skills and students’ learning outcomes. In cycle I, the average percentage of critical thinking skills was 78.67%, increasing to 85.43% in cycle II. The classical completeness of cognitive learning outcomes increased from 59.52% in cycle I to 85.71% in cycle II. Psychomotor completeness also increased from 61.90% (sufficient) in cycle I to 76.19% (good) in cycle II. The combination of guided inquiry and N.H.T. models has proven effective in training students’ thinking and psychomotor skills, especially at the investigation and communication stages of results.

Abstract

Religion is the primary foundation for character formation. However, religious values have not yet fully integrated into the students’ psyche. This research explores the development of religious character by integrating Sufi practices in education. The study was conducted at an Islamic boarding school, Aliyah madrasah, in Malang. The findings indicate that integrating Sufi practices into the educational curriculum significantly impacts the development of religious character. The strategy begins with the preparation of a clear vision and mission, an integrated curriculum, and the presence of teacher role models, all of which are crucial for fostering religious character. A conducive environment, regular evaluations, and religious extracurricular programs are also essential. In conclusion, a comprehensive educational process emphasizing responsibility, obedience, regular evaluations, religious extracurricular programs, partnerships with families and communities, and spiritual strengthening activities can effectively enhance students' religiosity.

Abstract

This study is about "The Behavior and Motivation of Angkringan Children in Gambling (Case Study in Laweyan Village)." The research aims to identify and analyze the behavior and motivation of children working at angkringan (street food stalls) in relation to their involvement in gambling activities in Laweyan Village. The study employs a case study approach to gain a deep and comprehensive understanding of the various social and psychological factors influencing children's engagement in gambling. Data collection was carried out through detailed participant observation, in-depth interviews with various relevant parties, and analysis of pertinent documents. The findings reveal that economic factors are the primary drivers for children to engage in gambling, with urgent financial needs compelling them to seek alternative income sources. The social environment also plays a significant role, particularly in terms of peer influence and community norms that do not strongly condemn gambling activities. The lack of supervision and attention from parents further reinforces children's involvement in these activities. The study concludes that holistic and coordinated interventions from the government, educational institutions, and social organizations are crucial in addressing this issue.

Abstract

Gamification is a cutting-edge pedagogical approach to addressing student social behaviour, motivation, and academic performance in the classroom, particularly in subjects that are perceived to be difficult such as mathematics where there was a perceived failure. Hence, this study investigated the effect of gamification-based teaching on junior secondary school student’s academic performance in mathematics in Kwara State. The study adopted a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest, non-equivalent group design. The population was all junior secondary students in Kwara State while the target population were all junior secondary students in J.S.S. 2 in Kwara-North Senatorial district. A purposive sampling technique was used to select two junior secondary schools based on the availability of computer laboratories. A total of 122 students (experimental group 64; control group 58) were involved. Three instruments were used for data collection. Split-half was used to test the reliability of the instruments and coefficients of .89 were obtained Data collected were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics at 0.05 level of significance. The study revealed that; gamification-based teaching had a significant effect on the experimental group (F (1,54) = 1.826; p< 0.05) and female students in the experimental group significantly performed better than male students after the treatment. This study concluded that the use of gamification-based teaching in mathematics enhanced teaching-learning effectiveness in mathematics. The study, therefore, recommended among others, that mathematics teachers should use gamification in teaching mathematics to reduce the level of abstractness associated with teaching-learning of mathematics.

Abstract

Effective integration of technology in education hinges upon teachers' perception, readiness, and pedagogical skills despite its diverse tools and platforms for interactive learning and accessing resources. The study assessed the current level of technology adoption and utilization among social studies teachers in Osun State, investigated the correlation between their perceived effectiveness and students' academic achievement, and identified influencing factors. The descriptive survey research design was adopted in the study. A sample of 144 teachers was used through the multi-stage sampling procedure. A self-developed instrument titled Perception of Teacher's Technology Adoption Questionnaire (PTTAQ) and student exam records in Social Studies were used as research instruments for data collection. The Cronbach Alpha estimate of the PTTAQ was 0.86. Data collected were analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistics. The result showed that the level of adoption is moderate (mean = 2.48, S.D=1.48), and utilization is moderate (mean = 2.46, S.D=1.37). Also, results show there is no correlation between teachers’ perceived effectiveness of technology adoption and students' academic achievement in social studies (r = -.081, p > .05). The perceived factors influencing teachers' attitudes toward technology adoption are technology self-efficacy, attitudes toward change, school culture and support, development and training opportunities on technology, perceptions of effectiveness, time and resource constraints. The study concluded that there were mixed perceptions of technology adoption among social studies teachers due to moderate levels of adoption and utilization. Ongoing programs, support, and resources are recommended to bolster teachers' technology self-efficacy for effective pedagogical practices.

Abstract

Religious-related social conflicts that occur in several regions in Indonesia have damaged the joints of humanity. This study aims to design PAI Learning Design that focuses on strengthening religious tolerance in SMA Negeri 1 Kedamean, especially in class 11, even the semester with the material ‘Religious Tolerance’. The research used a qualitative method with a case study approach, in which data were obtained from primary and secondary sources through observation, interview, and documentation techniques. Analysis techniques include data reduction, data presentation, and verification, while data validity is tested by triangulation. The results show that religious tolerance education must be given early to foster an open attitude and maintain harmony between religious communities. This learning design is divided into three stages: preparation, implementation, and evaluation, involving students in collaborative projects and hands-on research. This implementation can improve students’ understanding of tolerance as a tool to unify the nation. This research contributes to the development of tolerance-based PAI learning methods that are relevant in the era of multiculturalism and have a significant impact in minimizing intolerant attitudes among students.

Abstract

Bullying in Islamic boarding schools is a worrying phenomenon because it contradicts the main mission of Islamic boarding schools in shaping the character of students with noble morals. Although Islamic boarding schools are known as educational institutions based on religious values, bullying practices are still found in verbal, physical, and psychological forms. This study aims to examine how the internalization of Islamic boarding school values, particularly the trilogy and five awarenesses, plays a role in shaping an Islamic boarding school environment free from bullying practices. This study employs a qualitative approach, specifically a case study design, at the Nurul Jadid Islamic Boarding School. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation, involving Islamic boarding school administrators, foster parents, students, and regional heads as key informants. The findings show that open communication, sharing activities, daily sermons, and a spiritual-based reward and punishment system effectively shape the character of students who are empathetic and anti-violent. The contribution of this study lies in the development of a new perspective on preventing bullying based on religious values that is contextual and applicable in Islamic education. These results are important because they show that cultural and spiritual approaches can be an effective and sustainable alternative in creating a safe and character-based educational environment.
