Abstract

Climate change has caused significant increases in temperature and changes in rainfall patterns, which have an impact on soil water dynamics and agricultural productivity. This research analyzes the relationship between climate change and soil moisture through climate data collection and simulations using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT). The research results show that increasing temperature and uneven distribution of rainfall cause a decrease in soil moisture, especially on sandy land and land with steep topography. The implications of this decrease in soil moisture include increased irrigation requirements, reduced crop productivity, and increased risk of erosion. Adaptation strategies such as implementing precision irrigation, using mulch, and managing planting patterns are important to maintain soil moisture and agricultural productivity. By implementing this adaptive approach, it is hoped that the agricultural sector will be able to increase resilience to the impacts of climate change.

Abstract

Proper soil management is very important to maintain land quality and productivity in the long term. This research aims to analyze the impact of soil management on the physical properties and quality of soil. The methods used include collecting soil samples from various fields with different treatments, such as intensive plowing, adding organic fertilizer, and using chemical fertilizers. Laboratory analysis is carried out to measure soil physical parameters, including texture, density, porosity and permeability, as well as aspects of soil quality, such as organic matter, ph and the presence of microorganisms. The research results show that excessive soil management, such as intensive plowing, tends to damage soil structure, reduce porosity, and reduce water absorption capacity. On the other hand, regular use of organic matter can increase soil aggregation, increase water holding capacity, and increase the population of microorganisms that support soil fertility. The conclusion of this research is that sustainable soil management, especially through the addition of organic matter and minimum tillage, has a positive impact on the physical properties and quality of the soil. It is hoped that these results can become a reference in implementing more environmentally friendly and sustainable land management practices.

Abstract

This study aims to compare soil structure in sustainable and traditional agricultural systems, with a focus on soil physical and chemical parameters that influence soil fertility and the continuity of agricultural production. Sustainable farming systems employ practices such as crop rotation, composting, and the use of organic fertilizers, whereas traditional systems often rely on high chemical inputs. Data was collected through laboratory analysis of soil samples from both types of farming systems, including texture, organic matter content, pH and air holding capacity. The research results show that the soil in a sustainable farming system has a more stable structure, with a higher organic matter content and better ability to hold air compared to a traditional system. Meanwhile, traditional systems tend to cause degradation of soil structure and decrease in organic matter levels due to excessive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. These findings emphasize the implementation of sustainable practices to maintain agricultural quality and sustainability in the long term.

Abstract

The intercropping system is an agricultural technique that can enhance land-use efficiency and crop yields. This study aims to analyze the benefits of intercropping chili peppers (Capsicum frutescens) with sweet corn (Zea mays saccharata) in Nias. The research was conducted through a field experiment using a randomized block design (RBD), comparing intercropping with a monoculture system. Observed parameters included plant growth, yield, land equivalent ratio (LER), pest infestation, and economic benefits. The results showed that the intercropping system had an LER of 1.48, indicating higher efficiency than monoculture. The average height of chili plants in the intercropping system reached 55.2 cm, while the yield was 6.3 kg/m², slightly lower than in monoculture (7.5 kg/m²). However, total income from the intercropping system was higher, reaching IDR 20,200,000/ha, compared to chili monoculture (IDR 15,000,000/ha) and sweet corn monoculture (IDR 8,400,000/ha). Additionally, intercropping reduced pest infestations on chili plants compared to monoculture. Therefore, intercropping chili peppers and sweet corn is recommended as a more productive, sustainable, and economically beneficial farming alternative for farmers in Nias.

Abstract

To maintain sustainable agricultural productivity, one of the major challenges is controlling pests and plant diseases. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approaches use a variety of biological, physical, chemical, and cultural control techniques to reduce the impact of pests and diseases while maintaining ecosystem balance. The use of natural enemies, crop rotation, environmental management, and the use of sensory and environmentally friendly methods are all components of this strategy. The purpose of this study is to determine whether various IPM methods work well in various farming systems. In addition, this study will also investigate how these methods impact crop productivity, cost efficiency, and environmental sustainability. The results showed that regular use of IPM strategies can suppress pest populations and disease levels below economic thresholds, increase crop yields, and reduce environmental pollution levels. Farmers must be actively involved in the implementation, receive intensive extension, and receive government policy support. This integrated method offers a sustainable solution to overcome plant diseases and pests.

Abstract

Red chili (Capsicum annuum L.) is one of the vegetable commodities that is widely consumed by the majority of Indonesian people. The aim of conducting this research is to find out how to select and select red chili seeds (Capsicum annuum L.) that are good and suitable to be used as new superior and quality plant seeds. The research method we use is a research method based on data from previous research and practical work carried out directly. This research was conducted in September 2024, which was carried out in the FST building at Nias University. This research used one chili by cutting off both ends of the chili and the middle part was used as a candidate for new seeds after going through a selection process. The results of this research show that seed selection and selection techniques also determine the superiority and variety of superior plant seeds and produce good products. Selection and selection of chili seeds to be used as potential new seeds must be carried out to avoid failure in cultivation and, moreover, product results that are not good or satisfactory.

Abstract

This study examines the effect of cutting body parts, such as dorsal, pectoral, ventral, anal, caudal and lateral fins, on the physiological and behavioral responses of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and catfish (Clarias gariepinus). The study was conducted through an experimental approach by cutting fish body parts, then observing changes in physiology (such as stress hormone release) and behavior (swimming activity, social interaction). Results showed that injury significantly affected swimming efficiency, body balance, sensory responses, as well as increased stress characterized by cortisol release. Injury also altered fish behavior, including reduced activity and a tendency to hide. Morphometric and meristic analyses revealed that body damage impacted the body size and adaptability of the fish. This study emphasizes the importance of good aquaculture management, including water quality and nutrition, to support tissue regeneration, fish welfare and farm productivity. The findings provide important insights for sustainable aquaculture practices.

Abstract

The evaluation of technology-based irrigation in the agricultural sector aims to assess the effectiveness and impact of modern irrigation technologies in improving water use efficiency, crop productivity, and environmental sustainability. This study examines the application of automated irrigation systems based on soil moisture sensors and drip irrigation technology in several agricultural areas. The research findings show that the use of sensor-based irrigation technology can reduce water usage by 35-40%, compared to conventional irrigation methods, which tend to be more wasteful. In addition, this technology increases crop productivity by approximately 20-25% due to more efficient and timely water distribution. Operational costs are also reduced, particularly in terms of water consumption and labor. Another positive impact is the contribution of irrigation technology to environmental conservation, by reducing water waste and preventing damage to agricultural ecosystems. Although the higher initial investment cost poses a challenge, long-term results indicate that sensor-based irrigation technology provides significant benefits for the agricultural sector, both economically and environmentally. This study recommends the wider adoption of irrigation technologies, supported by policies that facilitate access and training for farmers.
