Abstract

The sacrament of baptism holds a highly fundamental position in the life of the Catholic Church, as it constitutes the foundation of Christian life and the gateway to the reception of other sacraments. This article examines the responsibilities of ministers of baptism from canonical and pastoral perspectives, focusing on three main issues: the recording of baptism for adopted children, the handling of lost baptismal records, and the eligibility of religious men and women to serve as godparents. The study employs a qualitative approach using a normative-theological method through a literature review of the Codex Iuris Canonici, the Catechism of the Catholic Church, various pastoral documents, and relevant academic literature. The findings indicate that the administration of baptism must be carried out validly, accurately, and with compassion, balancing administrative legal precision with pastoral sensitivity. In the baptism of adopted children, record-keeping must comply with both ecclesiastical law and civil documentation while safeguarding the child’s dignity and privacy. In cases of missing baptismal records, pastors are obliged to conduct proper canonical verification and, if necessary, perform conditional baptism to ensure legal certainty and spiritual welfare. Meanwhile, religious brothers and sisters may serve as godparents if they meet canonical requirements and possess the genuine capacity to accompany the baptized child’s growth in faith. This study affirms that every ecclesial act must be grounded in the principle salus animarum suprema lex—that the salvation of souls is the supreme law—so that the administration of baptism embodies an integral harmony between juridical order, pastoral care, and the saving love of Christ.

Abstract

Marriage is one of the fundamental aspects of human life that not only involves social dimensions but also carries deep religious significance. The Catholic Church regards marriage as a Sacrament. In the pluralistic context of East Barito Regency, the understanding and appreciation of the sacramental value of Catholic marriage present a particular challenge. This study aims to analyze the meaning of Catholic marriage as a sacrament from the perspective of Church law and its application amid religious and cultural pluralism in East Barito Regency. The research employs a qualitative method with a library research approach, focusing on content analysis of primary sources such as the 1983 Code of Canon Law and magisterium Church documents, as well as secondary sources in theology, law, and pastoral studies. The data were analyzed descriptively and qualitatively through conceptual and normative approaches to examine the relationship between sacramental theology and canon law. The results show that Catholic marriage has two essential dimensions— theological and juridical— which unite in the sacred covenant between husband and wife. In the pluralistic context of East Barito, the Church faces challenges in applying canonical norms to traditional customs and mixed marriages, thus requiring a pastoral approach that is dialogical and inculturative. In conclusion, Church law serves not merely to regulate but to guide the faithful in living the sacrament of marriage as a sign of God’s love within a diverse society.

Abstract

This paper examines the role and challenges faced by the SOS Children’s Villages Flores Waturia, Maumere community in providing care for children who have lost parental custody. Children in this community experience various difficulties, particularly in meeting basic needs such as health, education, and psychological and spiritual support. The absence of parents makes them vulnerable to losing direction and hope for the future. On the other hand, limitations in resources, both human and financial, pose serious obstacles in ensuring the provision of adequate care. In this context, the Catholic Church is expected to serve as a strategic partner capable of providing spiritual and moral support. The Church is called not only to provide material assistance but, more importantly, to engage in pastoral services, faith-based accompaniment, and empowerment of the children's potential. Through a humanistic and faith-based approach, the Church can become a transformative force that restores the dignity of children and advocates for their often-overlooked rights. The involvement of the Church is a concrete manifestation of the Christian mission to bring love, justice, and hope to those most in need.

Abstract

The inculturation of the Catholic Church's faith in the context of local culture is a strategic issue in contemporary missiology, especially in the territory of indigenous peoples of Indonesia. This study examines the process of inculturation of the Catholic Church with the Dayak Pompakang culture, focusing on the traditional prosesion of “Ngongkat Salib’' (raising the cross in local religious ceremonies), through the framework of Robert J. Schreiter's sociological theory of religion. The research method uses a qualitative ethnographic approach, collecting data through in-depth interviews with religious and community leaders, participatory observation of rituals, and an examination of Church documents and traditional Dayak Pompakang literature. The study's results demonstrate that the “Ngongkat Salib” embodies the transformation of Christian symbols into a form that integrates local cultural identities, resulting in an authentic communication of faith that is both respectful and sincere. This process of inculturation is not just syncretism, but a genuine dialogue in which Christian values and Dayak local wisdom enrich each other. Schreiter's theory of “Constructing Local Theologies” proves relevant in explaining how the Catholic Church facilitates meaningful encounters between universal faith and specific cultural contexts. The academic implications of this research enrich the discourse of the sociology of religion and missiology in Southeast Asia, while pastorally offering an inculturation model that can be applied in contextual evangelization in other indigenous territories. Research confirms that deep inculturation requires a dialogical approach, respect for cultural heritage, and theological openness to dynamic changes in the lives of local people.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the dynamics of interfaith relations in Indonesia by integrating Social Identity Theory (SIT), Social Identity Complexity (SIC), and Pope Francis' synodality. The focus of the study is to understand how social identity categories, identity intersections, and the synodal vision of communion, participation, and mission can enrich the paradigm of religious moderation in a pluralistic society. This study uses qualitative methods with a literature review and content analysis approach to identity theory, empirical findings on interfaith tolerance, and Catholic Church documents. The study was conducted by exploring the key concepts of SIT and SIC, examining social practices of tolerance in the Indonesian context, and describing the pastoral relevance of synodality as a dialogical approach. The results of the study show that religious moderation can develop when religious communities have a natural meeting space, build flexible social identity intersections, and actively engage in mutual listening dialogue as emphasized in the 2021–2023 Synod process. In this context, synodality provides a theological framework for the Church to foster inclusive, creative, and transformative relationships, so that each religion can display its uniqueness in diversity without losing the spirit of brotherhood.

Abstract

This article aims to examine the extent to which hospitality can bring blessings in perspective Pope Francis’ Encyclical Fratelli Tutti, as demonstrated by the experience of Abraham and Sarah in Genesis 18:1-15. The text recounts an encounter between Abraham and three men who came to him. This encounter took place near the cedar tree at Mamre, where Abraham showed his hospitality through two gestures and a good meal. At the end of the encounter, the visitors unexpectedly promised that Abraham would have offspring. This article uses a narrative approach to highlight the patterns and techniques of hospitality that bring blessings. The author emphasizes how Abraham's hospitality changed his life and brought unexpected blessings. Through this approach, the author concludes that hospitality is an act that springs from Abraham's heart, demonstrated through his attentiveness to his guests and his loving acceptance and hospitality towards strangers. In line with the voice of the Catholic Church in the Pope Francis’ Encyclical Fratelli Tutti, hospitality is the foundation of brotherhood and friendship in life together.
