Abstract

This study aims to improve letter recognition skills in children aged 5–6 years at TK Punai, Tanjung Seteko Village, Indralaya Subdistrict, through the implementation of interactive card play methods. The research employs a Classroom Action Research (CAR) approach using the Kemmis and McTaggart model, conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consists of the stages of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. The subjects of this study were 16 children in group B, aged 5–6 years. Data collection techniques included observation and documentation, while data analysis utilized both qualitative and quantitative approaches. The results showed an improvement in children’s letter recognition ability, with 81% in the first cycle and an increase to 95% in the second cycle. Thus, the interactive card play method proved effective in enhancing children's letter recognition skills. This study also had a positive impact on children's cognitive development, concentration, and memory. Interactive card games can stimulate children to think actively, develop their ability to remember letter shapes and names, and train eye-hand coordination.

Abstract

The concept of School-Based Management (SBM) has emerged as a key strategy for improving the quality of education in the context of regional autonomy. It offers potential solutions to various challenges faced by educational institutions. A systematic literature review was conducted to analyze the components of school-based management that have been discussed, researched or evaluated at the early childhood education institution level over the past decade (2019-2024). A total of nine studies were included in this review and it was found that principals' professionalism, teachers' performance, curriculum development, learning methods and innovations, learners' potential, procurement of facilities and infrastructure, control of school operational costs, school programs, school and community partnerships and school culture and character were discussed aspects in the implementation of school-based management. This review also shows positive views and evaluations of the implementation of school-based management elements. In addition, the results show that the implementation of the components of school-based management improves the quality of the education unit. However, more in-depth studies will be needed in the future to provide authors with clear guidelines for assessing the implementation of school-based management at the specific education unit level.

Abstract

Disaster mitigation needs to be introduced in early childhood education institutions. This study was motivated the high disaster risk in Gorontalo Regency, while disaster preparedness education in early childhood centers remains incomplete. This qualitative research aims to identify disaster mitigation learning at TK Pembina Limboto, located in Limboto Village, Gorontalo Regency. The study involved eight teachers as participants. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed using an interpretative phenomenological approach, grouping statements based on teachers’ experiences, perceptions, and reflections, while also considering the social-emotional context. The findings reveal that disaster mitigation learning at TK Pembina Limboto only covers the pre-disaster and during-disaster phases, focusing on prevention and self-rescue. Teachers have never received disaster preparedness training, so their understanding is limited to basic concepts. However, the simulation based learning applied in the school has shaped teachers’ perception that disaster learning is an important risk reduction effort, as reflected in the emotional responses of children and parents. The implications of this study highlight the need for disaster training for early childhood teachers, the provision of safe school facilities in accordance with Ministry of Education and Culture Regulation No. 33 of 2019, and the integration of a disaster mitigation curriculum that includes pre-disaster, during-disaster, and post-disaster phases. These steps are expected to strengthen the school’s role as an agent of disaster risk reduction.

Abstract

Abstract Social skills are crucial for early childhood development, especially for children with ASD. Success in improving social skills in children with special needs depends heavily on the learning system implemented. Based on observations, Fun & Play Inclusive Kindergarten Semarang implements an individual learning program utilizing realia media to develop the social skills of children with special needs. This study aims to determine how the use of realia media in an individual learning program can support social skills in early childhood with autism. This study used a qualitative research study with a descriptive qualitative approach. The results showed that the use of realia media is adjusted to the severity of autism, ranging from mild, moderate, to severe, where each level has different social skill abilities. The success of this learning method is influenced by several factors such as the suitability of the media to the learning objectives, teacher competence, the child's physical and emotional condition, cooperation between parents and teachers, and the appropriate implementation of special dietary patterns for children. It is hoped that this research will further enrich teachers' knowledge in the world of inclusive education and improve their readiness to become an inclusive school that can open opportunities for anyone to receive adequate educational services.

Abstract

Fathers are not only biological parents, but also play an important role in shaping the self-confidence and identity of young children. The absence of a father, whether physical or emotional, can cause emotional trauma and hinder a child's psychological development from an early age. This study employs a phenomenological method with an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) approach to explore the meaning of the experiences of five young children at TK Taruna Bakti Bandung who grew up without a complete father figure. The findings reveal that the absence of a father significantly impacts the formation of a child's psychological structure and identity, weakening prophetic values such as love, responsibility, justice, and exemplary behavior. This condition also affects spiritual autonomy, social skills, and self-understanding. Patriarchal parenting patterns that marginalize the father's role as a moral-spiritual partner exacerbate the child's developmental conditions. Based on these findings, this study recommends the development of an early childhood education curriculum that is responsive to the needs of children from fatherless families through the integration of prophetic values, the strengthening of emotional literacy, and the cultivation of social skills. Additionally, school-based psychosocial interventions such as small group mentoring, counseling, and the involvement of surrogate father figures are needed to help children build a complete, resilient identity rooted in moral-spiritual values, even without the direct presence of a father.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the impact of daily habit of reading picture storybooks on the character formation and language development of young children. The research employs a qualitative method using the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach, analyzing 22 relevant articles. The study findings indicate that the habit of reading one picture storybook daily contributes positively to enriching vocabulary, enhancing communication skills, and shaping children's character through the moral and social values embedded in stories. Factors influencing the effectiveness of this habit include active interaction between parents and teachers in accompanying children during reading, consistent reading frequency, as well as family and school environments that support early literacy. Regular reading activities have been shown to support holistic child development, both in language and character aspects. Therefore, reading picture storybooks daily can be an effective strategy in early childhood education, as it not only enhances language skills but also builds positive and empathetic personalities in children. This research highlights the importance of the role of adults and the environment in fostering literacy habits.

Abstract

Literacy development in children aged 5–6 is crucial for fostering cognitive growth, school readiness, and social competence. However, implementing effective literacy teaching strategies remains challenging in diverse educational settings. This study employs a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) to examine the impact of digital learning media on early childhood literacy, focusing on the competencies developed and factors influencing effectiveness. Analysis of 34 selected studies reveals that digital media significantly enhances literacy skills, particularly in language, communication, and cognitive domains. Interactive tools such as digital storybooks, educational applications, and learning games promote engagement, vocabulary expansion, narrative comprehension, and critical thinking. The active involvement of parents and educators is essential in guiding children and selecting developmentally appropriate digital content. Although the direct effects on reading and writing acquisition remain underexplored, findings suggest that integrating digital media in literacy instruction can make learning more enjoyable and effective. The study concludes that digital media serves as a promising pedagogical tool to strengthen early literacy when supported by active adult participation, thoughtful content design, and conducive learning environments.

Abstract

This research focuses on developing an interactive picture book as a learning medium to teach the concept of quantity comparison to early childhood learners. The study addresses a critical need for more effective and engaging educational tools, as conventional teaching methods often prove insufficient and are not well-suited to the cognitive characteristics of children in the preoperational stage. The research followed a Research and Development (R&D) approach, utilizing the ADDIE development model. This process encompasses the stages of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. A limited trial was conducted with 11 students from a kindergarten, aged 5-6 years. The findings from expert validation demonstrated that the medium is highly valid, achieving an average validity score of 96.36%. Additionally, practicality assessments provided very positive feedback, with a 90.9% score from teachers and a 91.24% score from parents, confirming the medium’s practical utility. The student trial also revealed a notable improvement in children's enthusiasm, active engagement, and overall comprehension of quantity comparison. Ultimately, this study's practical contribution is the development of a valid, practical, and effective innovative learning medium that can serve as a valuable resource for educators and parents.
