Abstract

Foreign language anxiety has been proven to be an important issue in language learning, according to research on language learning in foreign languages. This study aims to determine the level of anxiety experienced by English preservice teachers. Most research projects in the past concerned learners’ anxiety about students who learning English. To fill the gap, the current study tries to deliver a different perspective on classroom anxiety. Thus, the current study investigates anxiety from preservice teachers’ points of view quantitatively. The current study examines the level of anxiety by adopting the Foreign Language Teaching Anxiety Scale (FLTAS) by Yoon (2012). Next, the scale in the form of a questionnaire has been responded to by 27 English preservice teachers. Further, the results show that the preservice teachers have a moderate level of anxiety. Overall, the study outlines the principal factors causing and affecting preservice anxiety about teaching English as a foreign language in the classroom

Abstract

This research aims to describe transitivity process types in Markobar text. Quantitative data supported this qualitatively-oriented descriptive study. The subject of the investigation is a Markobar text in Angkola language. The research was designed using qualitative content analysis. Six indigenous elders and four parents were purposively selected as participants in this study. The data source used is oral data in the form of transcripts.  Transitivity in Halliday's systemic functional grammar theory was applied to the data analysis.  The study reveals the following two primary findings: 1) All of the six process types can be found in Angkola Markobar text; 2) Material process and mental process are the most frequently occurred process types in the traditional traditional text of Angkola. The dominant use of material process suggests that brides ought to practice the traditional Angkola skills mentioned. Besides, because Markobar text is a kind of oral tradition, the dominant use of mental processes places emphasis on expressing the innermost feelings, ideas, and views of Angkola people.

Abstract

This classroom action research aimed to enhance English grammar learning at a junior high school level by incorporating game-based activities, focusing on the simple present tense. The primary objective was to address identified challenges, such as low student enthusiasm and understanding of grammatical concepts. The study used classroom action research, unfolded in three cycles, each refining the game-based approach based on insights from the previous cycle. The methodology involved pre-tests, game-based lessons, observations, and reflective assessments. Results demonstrated sustained improvements, with increased scores and active participation. Key findings indicated enhanced active participation, motivation, concept understanding, collaboration, spontaneous English use, and a deeper understanding of the game-based method's shortcomings. The time required for understanding they were varied, reflecting the effectiveness of scaffolding in the learning environment. Implications of the research suggest the continued integration of game-based approaches, recognizing the diverse learning needs of students. Teachers should tailor scaffolding strategies to individual ZPDs, fostering collaboration and addressing language apprehension. The study contributes to the broader discourse on effective language teaching methodologies, emphasizing the dynamic interplay of theory and practice in the language learning classroom.

Abstract

Motivated by the popularity of online reading on Wattpad, this research was conducted to investigate the metacognitive awareness of digital and online reading strategies to 39 undergraduate students who read English Web-novels on Wattpad. Additionally, the researcher explored the potential influence of English proficiency (TOEFL) and field of study, as well as the specific features of Wattpad that aid in their reading experience. Employing a quantitative survey and adapting the Metacognitive Awareness of Reading Study Inventory (MARSI) developed by Mokhtari et al. (2018). The findings indicated that participants had a moderate level of strategies when reading English web-novels on Wattpad (M = 3.42). Problem Solving Reading Strategies were the most used (M = 3.80), followed by Global Reading Strategies (M = 3.73) and Support Reading Strategies (M = 2.73). English proficiency and field of study did not significantly impactful, with all groups showing similar levels (M = 3.4). Additionally, interactive features were not considered helpful (M = 2.51 and M = 2.23, respectively), while description and figure attachment features were frequently used (M = 4.15 and M = 3.25, respectively). The results indicated a necessity to integrate specific strategies, like incorporating Global Reading Strategies for pre-reading tasks and utilizing Problem Solving Strategies during reading activities, within EFL instruction. The research highlighted the obstacles encountered by both learners and instructors in the process of teaching and acquiring reading skills. It suggested that incorporating these strategies could effectively tackle comprehension challenges and improve overall language proficiency

Abstract

This study seeks the difference between female and male students' intrinsic and extrinsic motivation and attitudes toward using Classpoint in EFL learning. Applying quantitative research, 61 EFL high school students of Brawijaya Smart School participated in this research. The instrument used in this study was a questionnaire consisting of 21 items using a Likert-type scale—the chosen items comprised three topics (students' intrinsic and extrinsic motivation and attitudes toward the use of Classpoint). The data analysis uses SPSS 27 and t-test to seek the significance of the result of the present study. This research indicates that female students have a higher motivation rate and attitude toward using Classpoint in EFL classrooms and that students across genders significantly differ in their perception of intrinsic motivation and attitudes. It also showed that utilizing Classpoint augments intrinsic motivation better than extrinsic motivation. The result implies English teachers should motivate and encourage male students to participate in the learning process by providing fun activities and giving rewards.

Abstract

The ability to regulate emotions in the acceptance of test results can impact both the increase and decrease of motivation. Unfortunately, there has not been much research explaining this phenomenon. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the influence of emotions on the acceptance of test results on students' learning motivation. This research used an ex post facto approach with a cause-and-effect correlation design. The population consisted of 300 students at SMPN 2  Kuta Selatan. Using purposive sampling, 30 students were involved as research samples. The research instrument consisted of 21 statements from the DAS questionnaire about test results, 20 statements about student motivation, and a formative test. Data were analyzed descriptively, using correlation statistics and paired sample t-tests. The research results showed that there was a significant relationship between the ability to manage depression, anxiety, and stress in the acceptance of test results. In addition, students with better emotional management skills tended to have positive motivation if their test results were disappointing. Meanwhile, students with low emotional abilities also had low motivation. For these affecting factors on students’ achievements, this study suggests a more holistic pedagogical approach and intervention as essential components in efforts to improve their learning achievement
