Abstract

This study aims to identify the challenges and needs of students in learning English at SMKN 1 Hu'u Dompu, especially in the culinary and tourism programs. This study used a qualitative method with semi-structured interviews with two English teachers. The results showed that students faced difficulties in speaking, pronunciation, and low learning motivation due to irrelevant materials. This study suggests the development of English books specifically for culinary and tourism majors with an interactive and context-based approach, integration of local Dompu culture, and the use of digital technology such as digital books with AI-assisted audio to improve pronunciation skills. The combination of technology, local context, and relevant materials can create a more engaging and effective learning experience for students.

Abstract

This study examines vocabulary learning strategies among eighth graders at SMP Negeri 2 Airmadidi during the first semester of the 2024/2025 school year. Using a descriptive quantitative approach, researchers collected data through a validated questionnaire assessing five strategy types: Determination, Social, Memory, Cognitive, and Metacognitive. A pilot test ensured the questionnaire’s reliability and accuracy. Findings indicate Memory Strategies were the most frequently used (2.951), closely followed by Metacognitive (2.927). In contrast, Cognitive Strategies ranked the lowest (2.415), likely due to their demanding nature, requiring higher mental processing. This suggests students favor methods that are easier to apply rather than those requiring deep analytical engagement. Given this preference, educators should incorporate Cognitive Strategy-based techniques to strengthen vocabulary retention and application. Methods such as problem-solving with real-life examples, analyzing word meanings in context, and creating mind maps can help students develop a deeper understanding of vocabulary. These strategies challenge learners to engage more actively with words, enhancing their ability to recall and use them effectively in communication. By blending various learning approaches, students can build stronger vocabulary skills that support both academic success and real-world language use.

Abstract

Indonesia, as a country rich in ethnic, religious, racial, and cultural diversity, faces challenges in maintaining harmony among its various groups. Religious moderation serves as a vital solution to foster a harmonious society by promoting a balanced approach to practicing religious teachings, respecting differences, and avoiding extremism. Madrasahs, as Islamic educational institutions, play a strategic role in internalizing the values of religious moderation through a culture that emphasizes compassion, peace, and tolerance. This study uses a qualitative method with a literature review approach. The findings reveal that madrasah culture plays a key role in instilling the values of religious moderation in students by creating an inclusive environment that respects diversity. Through a religion-based approach that highlights tolerance, madrasahs can nurture a generation capable of facing social diversity with openness and acceptance. This education focuses not only on theoretical knowledge but also on the practical application of these values in everyday life. Fostering tolerance and wisdom in dealing with differences is crucial in Indonesia’s multicultural society. Therefore, the implementation of religious moderation within the curriculum and activities of madrasahs—through a comprehensive approach involving all school elements, including teachers and students—serves as an effective strategy to create a generation that is not only religiously literate but also capable of living harmoniously within social diversity.

Abstract

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education has gained considerable attention for its potential to enhance teaching and learning experiences. This study examines the perceptions and practices of English teachers in Samarinda, East Kalimantan, regarding AI integration in English language teaching. Data were collected from 145 English teachers across public and private secondary schools using a structured questionnaire covering demographic information, perceptions of AI, and current AI integration practices. The findings indicate that most teachers hold a positive outlook on AI, with 65% recognizing its potential benefits, such as improving student engagement and personalized learning. However, challenges remain, as 55% of respondents expressed concerns about the complexity of AI tools, while 45% feared potential job displacement. Although 58% of teachers reported using AI tools, only 20% fully integrated AI into their daily teaching routines. Further analysis highlights that demographic factor, such as teaching experience and prior AI training, significantly influence teachers’ readiness to adopt AI. Teachers with more experience and relevant training exhibited greater confidence and a higher tendency to integrate AI tools effectively. These findings emphasize the need for targeted professional development programs to support AI adoption in English language teaching.

Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of the Pre-Reading Plan (PREP) strategy in enhancing reading comprehension among eighth-grade students at SMPN 3 Panca Rijang. Employing a pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest method, the research involved 20 students and one English teacher as participants. Data collection included pretests, posttests, and questionnaires, analyzed through qualitative and quantitative methods. Results indicated significant improvements in students' reading comprehension post-implementation of the PREP strategy, with the percentage of students meeting the minimum completeness criteria increasing from 35% to 70%. Additionally, students exhibited higher engagement levels during learning activities, and the teacher's performance in classroom management improved. Many students expressed a positive interest in the PREP strategy. These findings support the conclusion that the PREP strategy effectively enhances reading comprehension among students. It is recommended that the PREP strategy be adopted more widely to foster improved reading skills in English language learning contexts, as it encourages students to activate prior knowledge and engage more deeply with the reading material. Overall, this research highlights the importance of interactive and student-centered teaching strategies in improving reading comprehension and fostering a positive learning environment.

Common speech acts identified included warning, requesting, inviting, suggesting, promising, refusal, and commanding. Furthermore, communication strategies such as politeness—both positive and negative—were evident, with members often using direct and indirect forms of communication to achieve their goals. The results also indicated that ESA members were interested in and actively engaged in utilizing speech acts and communication strategies in their interactions. This was evidenced by the average questionnaire score of 82.30, categorized as high interest. The two activities that are considered most useful for improving speaking skills are role-playing and simulation, both of which received a 57.1% recommendation. Chatting emerges as the most favored activity for enhancing writing skills, with 71.4% of students supporting its effectiveness. As far as improving writing skills go, talking is the most preferred activity (71.4% of students agree). Lastly, per 61.9% of students, reading articles from newspapers or magazines is the best exercise that improves reading abilities. By adjusting their teaching methods to better suit the needs of informatics students, lecturers will be likely to create an English language environment for learning that is both more successful and entertaining for students.

Abstract

This research aims to produce a Critical Listening teaching module based on gender equality that is valid and practical in the Critical Listening Teaching Course. This research product development procedure is based on the ADDIE model (Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, Evaluation) and is limited to the third stage. This is due to the limitations of researchers. The first activity is the analysis process. This activity is carried out in two stages, namely problem analysis and needs analysis. Validation of teaching modules is carried out by listening subject experts and language experts. The practicality of the teaching module is seen through filling out a questionnaire for users of the teaching module, namely lecturers and students. The effectiveness of the teaching module is seen from the results of activities and student learning outcomes. The product was tested on students of the English Language Education Study Program. Based on the results of the student needs analysis, it was stated that students need learning resources that can support Critical Listening. However, this teaching module still requires further development because it is related to inserting material about gender equality in it.
