Abstract

This research investigates the Sandobatu tradition in Compong Village, Sidenreng Rappang Regency, with a specific focus on its significance in preserving Masara culture. Utilizing a qualitative research approach, the study examines the role of traditional leaders in maintaining this cultural heritage and fostering a sense of identity among the community. The findings reveal that while traditional leaders actively promote and uphold the Masara traditions, the younger generation faces challenges in preserving them due to the growing influence of globalization and modern technology. This shift has led to a decline in cultural understanding and engagement among younger members of the community. In response, efforts have been made to educate the youth on the importance of these traditions through cultural discussions and interactive learning activities. Additionally, the study underscores the necessity of documenting and digitizing Masara rituals to ensure their longevity and accessibility for future generations. Preserving these traditions is crucial for maintaining the cultural integrity of the community and strengthening intergenerational connections.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of Mappatabe' culture on education in the Bugis region, with a particular focus on Lasiwala Village, Sidrap District, South Sulawesi. Mappatabe' is a local tradition that reflects the values of respect, politeness, and morality passed down from generation to generation in Bugis society. This study used a qualitative approach with in-depth interviews, participatory observation and document analysis to collect data from various parties, including religious leaders, educators, traditional leaders and the younger generation. The results showed that Mappatabe' culture has an important role in shaping students' character, especially in terms of respect for parents, teachers, and others. The values contained in Mappatabe' also contribute to improving discipline and order in the school environment. However, the main challenge in preserving this culture is the influence of modernization and globalization which tends to reduce traditional respectful practices. In addition, the lack of in-depth understanding of the values of Mappatabe' makes most of the younger generation only see it as a formal ritual without understanding the moral essence contained in it. To maintain the sustainability of this culture in education, this research recommends collaboration between families, schools and communities in integrating Mappatabe' values into the formal and non-formal education curriculum. Strategies that can be implemented include strengthening local culture-based character education, increasing the involvement of traditional leaders in learning, and using interactive learning methods such as traditional games and folklore. This research makes an important contribution to the development of local culture based education in Indonesia, particularly in maintaining Bugis cultural identity amidst changing times. By maintaining and adapting the Mappatabe' culture, it is hoped that the younger generation can still understand and apply the ethical and moral values that characterize Bugis society.

Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of professional development (PD) programs in Indonesia from educators’ perspectives, focusing on training quality, content relevance, implementation, and follow-up support. Using a descriptive quantitative research design, data were collected from 47 teachers across eight junior and senior high schools in Sorong City through a structured questionnaire. The results indicate that PD programs are highly beneficial in enhancing teachers’ knowledge, introducing innovative teaching strategies, and improving student learning outcomes. Key factors influencing effectiveness include engaging and interactive training formats, knowledgeable facilitators, and collaborative opportunities among educators. Teachers also reported increased confidence in their teaching abilities and observed positive changes in student engagement. However, challenges such as scheduling constraints by limiting time for deep learning, causing cognitive overload, and reducing opportunities for follow-up and reflection. Also, the need for sustained institutional support were noted. The study concludes that PD programs significantly contribute to teacher effectiveness and professional growth. To optimize their impact, continuous mentorship, flexible program structures, and alignment with real classroom challenges should be prioritized.

Abstract

This study examines word formation trends in contemporary popular music through an analysis of Meghan Trainor’s song “Made You Look.” The aim is to explore how linguistic creativity in pop lyrics contributes to emotional expression and social interaction. Utilizing a qualitative approach, specifically discourse analysis, the research investigates how word formation processes shape cultural identity and audience engagement. The study relies on theories from Levitin (2006), Lieber (2009), and Yule (2010) to understand the cognitive, morphological, and structural aspects of language in music. Findings indicate that the lyrics of “Made You Look” incorporate various word formation processes, particularly clipping (3), coinage (1), derivation (1), compounding (4), and conversion (2). Examples such as “nothin’” (clipping), “Gucci” (coinage), and “‘bout” (clipping) reflect the informal, conversational tone characteristic of pop music. These linguistic choices enhance relatability, reinforce cultural identity, and contribute to the song’s rhythmic appeal. Additionally, the study highlights how Trainor’s use of word formation aligns with sociolinguistic trends in informal speech, particularly within African American Vernacular English (AAVE). The study concludes that word formation in pop lyrics is not merely stylistic but also serves as a strategic linguistic tool for self-expression, audience connection, and cultural representation. This research contributes to the broader understanding of language evolution in media and popular culture.

Abstract

A crucial component of learning English is pronunciation, which is necessary for efficient and transparent communication. Students frequently struggle, nevertheless, especially when it comes to complicated vowel sounds like triphthongs (/aʊə/, /aɪə/, /eɪə/, /oʊə/, /ɔɪə/). This study is to analyze the types and causes of triphthong pronunciation errors among English education students at Universitas Negeri Makassar. By identifying the common mistakes, it is able to understand the influence of first language interference, motivation, and learning exposure on pronunciation accuracy to provide insights into effective teaching strategies to improve students’ phonetic competence, enhance pronunciation instruction, and support clearer communication in English as a result. Ten students who have trouble pronouncing triphthongs are used as the study's sample, and it uses a qualitative approach using a case study design. Semi-structured interviews were used to gather the data, and Miles and Huberman's narrative data analysis (1994), which includes data gathering, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing, was used to evaluate the data. According to the findings, (1) the most frequent mistakes were substitution, omission, and distortion; and (2) the interference of students' native tongues and the appearance of their learning attitude, demotivation, and age as contributing factors to having a good pronunciation for the triphthong sounds. This study advances our knowledge of pronunciation difficulties and offers suggestions for enhancing pronunciation instruction in English classes.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of the Werewolf game in improving the speaking skills of second-semester English Education students at Universitas Muhammadiyah Sidenreng Rappang. Speaking is one of the most essential language skills, yet many students face difficulties in fluency, confidence, and vocabulary usage. Traditional teaching methods often fail to actively engage students in meaningful communication. Therefore, implementing game-based learning, such as the Werewolf game, offers an interactive and enjoyable approach to language learning. This research employed a one-group pre-test and post-test pre-experimental design involving seven students. Participants engaged in structured speaking activities before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed using SPSS, revealing a significant improvement in students' speaking performance. The mean score increased from 54% to 83%, with a p-value of 0.006 (< 0.05), indicating a statistically significant impact. These findings suggest that incorporating the Werewolf game into speaking lessons can effectively enhance students’ participation, motivation, and confidence in expressing their ideas in English. The Werewolf game promotes real-time interaction, critical thinking, and spontaneous speech, which are crucial for developing communicative competence. By encouraging students to articulate their thoughts, respond to others, and negotiate meaning in a dynamic setting, the game fosters a more engaging and less anxiety-inducing environment compared to conventional methods.

Abstract

Students' English proficiency is often measured by their skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Among these, speaking is a primary focus of the English Education Department at Universitas Terbuka (UT). To assess whether students reach the desired level of proficiency, the department relies on standardized frameworks like the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). UT's curriculum on the Speaking course highlights the importance of CEFR, specifying that teaching should foster skills progression in English from elementary (A2) to intermediate (B2) levels. Despite this, there is a need to evaluate whether the implementation aligns with the curriculum's objectives, as the real-world application sometimes falls short of these standards. This research adopts a case study approach using mixed methods, combining qualitative and quantitative data in three regions. The result shows that the curriculum of speaking classes is based on the CEFR at the B2 level.

Abstract

This systematic review investigated the influence of teacher speech style on student engagement in English language learning. It examined various speech elements, including intonation, speaking speed, use of body language, and teacher-student interaction, to explore how these factors impacted students' participation and motivation. By analyzing studies published between 2020 and 2024, the review highlighted that teachers who adapted their speech styles to students' social characteristics and linguistic abilities fostered a more engaging and interactive learning environment. Intonation variations, appropriate speaking speed, the strategic use of humor, and a democratic speaking style were found to have significantly increased student engagement. This research contributed to understanding how speech style could be used as a pedagogical tool to enhance language learning and suggested that teacher training programs should incorporate techniques to refine these aspects of teaching for greater student involvement.

Abstract

This study explored the effectiveness of the Thinking, Talking, Writing, and Evaluation (TTWE) Strategy in enhancing reading comprehension among second-grade students at SMPN 1 Mare. A total of 20 students participated in the research. The data were collected through pre-experimental research with Pre-test and Post-test assessments. The Pre-test measured students’ initial reading comprehension abilities, while the Post-test evaluated their progress after the intervention. Results showed that the average Pre-test score was 56.05, indicating limited comprehension skills. Many students struggled with identifying main ideas, vocabulary, and implicit meanings within texts. After applying the TTWE Strategy, the Post-test average increased significantly to 80.1. The improvement was evident in both score range and classification, with several students achieving higher performance levels. The TTWE Strategy encouraged active learning through small group discussions, collaborative responses, and peer evaluations, which promoted deeper understanding and critical thinking. The engaging and interactive nature of the activities contributed to students' enthusiasm and participation during lessons. Statistical analysis using a t-test confirmed a significant difference between Pre-test and Post-test results, with the t-test value surpassing the critical value at the 0.05 significance level. These findings suggest that the TTWE Strategy is an effective approach to improving reading comprehension among junior high school students.
