Abstract

Perception of oral hygiene has a major impact on life expectancy worldwide, but in middle-income countries it is a problem, where oral health problems in Indonesia affect as much as 57.6% of the population. A semi-experimental study was conducted on October 30, 2024 on students at Al-Marusiyah Elementary School, Kediri City, East Java, Indonesia. The study method was carried out offline (face-to-face) using a mixture of presentation media (power point) and booklets. The socialization participants were divided into two parts: pre-socialization (pre-test) and post-socialization (post-test). The socialization participants were given questions to assess their knowledge and perceptions of oral health before and after the socialization. Participants' knowledge was classified as sufficient, moderate, and low in understanding oral hygiene before and after the socialization. This counseling was carried out as part of a collaboration between the Faculty of Dentistry (FKG) of the Bhakti Wiyata Institute of Health Sciences (IIK) and the Faculty of Dentistry (FKG) of the University of Sains Malaysia (USIM). This counseling aims to improve dental health knowledge of students at Al-Marusiyah Elementary School so that it is hoped that it can reduce the DMF-t rate in students at Al-Marusiyah Elementary School. Keywords: Dental health; Oral health; Elementary school students; Faculty of Dentistry Institute Health Science Bhakti Wiyata; Faculty of Dentistry Universiti Sains Malaysia.

Abstract

Medicinal plants in Indonesia consist of various species that have similar morphological structures that are difficult to distinguish from one another. In terms of ensuring the safety of using a medicinal plant, quality assurance and quality control are needed. Good quality medicinal plants can be obtained by standardizing medicinal plant raw materials, standardizing production processes, traditional medicinal products, distribution methods, and effective dosages. Gombengsari is part of Banyuwangi Regency. The main commodities in the area are coffee and other plantation commodities such as coconut, cloves, and medicinal plants. The purpose of the community service program is to provide education and training to our Community Service Partners, namely POKMAS Sumberwaru Maju, on how to ensure the quality of medicinal plant raw materials, as well as an effort to develop the Spice Village Program (Toga Village) in Gombengsari. The stages of the activity include: pretest, education or counseling, training in making herbal drinks, posttests, and assisting in the production of herbal products. The results of this counseling and training activity, as well as the mentoring that we have done, have a positive and beneficial impact on the group. This can be seen from the group actively practicing the knowledge that we have taught to the group team. This community service activity is planned to continue with a different theme, but still on interrelated material in Gombengsari Village. Keywords: Medicinal plants, traditional medicinal products, quality assurance

Abstract

Waste management is a major challenge in Pandansari Village, Kedungjajang District, Lumajang Regency, particularly due to sugarcane farming waste (dry leaves) and household waste, which are commonly burned in the open. This practice produces thick smoke that negatively affects air quality, public health, and road safety. The issue aligns with growing concerns over environmental health, especially as air pollution increases due to human activities such as open waste burning. This community service program aims to offer a more effective, efficient, and environmentally friendly waste management solution through the design and training of a low-smoke waste incinerator. The program’s partners include the village authorities and residents of Pandansari. Activities were carried out using participatory methods to involve the community at every stage, along with demonstrations to teach the technical skills for building, operating, and maintaining the device. The results show that the incinerator significantly reduces smoke emissions, is easy to operate, and has economic potential through production and sales opportunities. This innovation is important as it demonstrates anenvironmentally friendly technology that can be adapted and replicated in other regions facing similar waste management challenges. Keywords: Community service, waste management, low-smoke waste incinerator, environmentally friendly technology.

Abstract

The village of Ranulogong in the Randuagung District, Lumajang, has significant agricultural potential but is constrained by low water discharge during the dry season, which often leads to crop failure. On the other hand, the abundant coconut husk waste has not been optimally utilized. This Collaborative Community Service Program (KKN) aims to design and prepare a sustainable agricultural solution model through an innovative organic fertilizer made from cocopeat (coconut coir dust) mixed with chicken manure to increase soil water retention capacity. The program's implementation methods included: 1) The development of the cocopeat fertilizer product;2) The creation of a demonstration plot (demplot) as a proof of concept; 3) The production of educational media in the form of brochures and video tutorials for independent knowledge transfer; and 4) Community service programs in education at the elementary (SD) and early childhood education (PAUD) levels. The results of the activities showed the successful development of a ready- to-implement cocopeat fertilizer product and demonstrated its potential in maintaining soil moisture through the demonstration plot. Educational media were also produced and handed over to the village as a sustainable knowledge asset. The education programs at the elementary and early childhood levels proceeded as planned and succeeded in raising awareness of the importance of continuing education and in training the creativity of young children. This program successfully developed a foundation for sustainable agricultural solutions while also empowering the educational aspects in Ranulogong village. Keywords: Cocopeat, community empowerment, KKN (Student Community Service), sustainable agriculture, children's education

Abstract

Dental and oral health is an important part of general health that affects the quality of life of the community. Many residents of Jatisari Village, Tempeh Subdistrict, Lumajang Regency still experience dental and oral problems. Seeing this problem, KKN-K 029 students initiated the “SIKATAN” (Regular and Fun Children's Toothbrushing) Program as an effort to improve clean and healthy living behaviors from an early age. The objective of this activity is to increase the knowledge, skills, and awareness of elementary school/MI students in Jatisari Village regarding the importance of maintaining dental and oral health through interactive, enjoyable, and age-appropriate educational methods. The implementation method includes a pre-implementation stage involving coordination with village and school officials, preparation of educational media, and internal team task distribution. The implementation phase was carried out in three schools over six days, with a series of activities including counseling, toothbrushing practice using false teeth, quizzes, educational games, fun exercises, and puppet shows. Formative evaluation was conducted after the entire series of activities was completed, focusing on the achievement of program objectives. The results of the activity showed an increase in students' knowledge about the frequency, appropriate timing, and technique of toothbrushing. Through hands-on practice, most students were able to improve their toothbrushing techniques. Toothbrushing practice and puppet shows were proven to increase enthusiasm, concentration, and retention of dental health messages. Abstract

The role of women in supporting the family economy is what is interesting. Women's roles are generally limited to domestic work, including caring for their husbands and children, cooking, and performing other household chores. Several factors encourage women to contribute to their families' economy. First, women who are left behind by divorce or the death of their husbands (widows). They need to work hard to meet the living expenses that are usually met by their husbands, especially for those with children. Given this condition, there are many programs that support women in developing their abilities, namely through women's empowerment programs. Women's empowerment programs that aim to increase women's awareness and potential to achieve independence in supporting the family economy, namely, through the empowerment program for women as heads of families using traditional medicines. This community service will last for five (5) weeks and will take place in Menampu Village, Gumukmas District. In this activity, participants will gain knowledge covering traditional medicine production and management, as well as the marketing of traditional medicine products. Community service activities through the empowerment of women heads of families (PEKKA) through traditional medicine have been implemented well. However, until this module was compiled, several stages had not been implemented, namely, continuous monitoring and assistance with traditional medicine product marketing strategies. Therefore, this activity needs to be continued so that it produces a more perfect output, namely, the independence and welfare of the Empowered Pekka Development Group. Keywords: Female heads of households, Empowerment, Traditional medicine
