Abstract

Preschool-aged children need knowledge and support from the family to get used to a healthy lifestyle. Several studies have found that many children don't know how to wash their hands properly, brush their teeth properly, don't like eating vegetables and drinking water and don't get enough sleep. This community service practice aims to familiarize children with healthy lifestyle patterns such as washing their hands and brushing their teeth properly, eating vegetables and drinking water and sleeping healthily. Activities were carried out in Semarang, Central Java in February and March 2023 and were attended by 44 preschool children and 27 parents. Activities carried out include lectures, discussions, questions and answers, singing, demonstrations and simulations with children as well as counseling activities for parents by pediatric nurses, nutritionists and psychologists. The PkM results show that there is an increase in healthy lifestyle habits in hand washing habits, tooth brushing habits, healthy sleeping habits and limiting the use of cellphones. Apart from that, parents stated that the counseling provided was very useful. This PkM activity can provide a reference for methods for improving healthy lifestyles in preschool children.

Abstract

Stunting, a form of growth and development impairment due to chronic undernutrition, is a major threat to the quality of human resources. Faculty of Medicine, Pattimura Unversity Ambon, conducted a health education activity aimed at increasing the knowledge of pregnant women and their husbands regarding the importance of efforts to prevent stunting since the pregnancy period. This activity was carried out on 21 December 2021 involving 55 participants consisting of pregnant women and their husbands living in the catchment area of the Poka-Rumah Tiga Health Center, Ambon City. The activity included: 1) Provision of educational materials from resource persons 2) Evaluation of participant knowledge (pre and post-test), and 3) Distribution of promotional media (leaflets) to participants. This activity received positive responses from the Ambon City Health Office, Poka-Rumah Tiga Health Center, and all participants who attended the training. The pre-test assessment before the education sessions showed that 2% of participants had a 'low' level, 45% had a 'moderate' level and 53% had a 'high' level of knowledge about stunting and its prevention. However, in the post-test assessment after the end of the education session, none had a 'low' level of knowledge, only 25% had a ’moderate’ level and 75% of participants had a 'high' level of knowledge. The results indicated an increased level of knowledge in pregnant women and their husbands about the importance of stunting prevention since pregnancy after the training. This educational activity could be carried in the future by involving pregnant women in other areas in Ambon City.

Abstract

Alcohol consumption among young people has become a common practice. Based on interviews, the majority of youth in Association X in Jakarta frequently consume alcoholic beverages. A community service activity titled "A Generation Free from Alcohol" was aimed at increasing knowledge and intentions to reduce alcohol consumption among the youth group in Association X. The methods used included counseling, focused group discussions, and the creation of a shared commitment, which involved 11 key individuals from Association X. The activity began with a pretest to assess knowledge and commitment, followed by the presentation of material on the dangers of alcohol, its effects, and sharing experiences related to overcoming alcohol addiction. This was followed by focused group discussions, presentations of discussion results, a posttest using the same questionnaire, and a joint commitment declaration. The results showed the greatest increase in knowledge regarding ways to overcome alcohol addiction (78.6%), the causes of alcohol addiction (50%), and the negative impact of alcohol on mental health (41.3%). This activity successfully provided cognitive benefits to participants regarding the dangers of alcohol and its effects on the body. However, the activity has not yet optimally reduced the intention to consume alcohol or encourage peers to drink alcoholic beverages. The implication is that similar activities in the future should not only focus on knowledge transfer but also develop strategies that address the antecedents and determinants of young people's intentions to consume alcohol.

Abstract

Cardiovascular disease is the main cause of death throughout the world. Prevention of cardiovascular disease can reduce mortality rate. Some of the main risk factors for cardiovascular disease in office employees are smoking habits, lack of physical activity, unbalanced diet, obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, stress and lack of sleep. Considering the importance of changing people's behavior to be more aware of risk factors that lead to cardiovascular disease, education and health checks are carried out targeting office employees. Health promotion programs can reduce the risk of disease in company employees. Educational activities “CERDIK” and blood pressure and cholesterol checks were carried out at one of the accounting offices in North Jakarta. The number of participants who took part in this activity was 87 people. Participants with a good level of knowledge before education were 71.9% and after education 96.9%. The majority of participants had abnormal cholesterol levels (36.8%) and blood pressure in the pre-hypertension (40.2%) and grade 1 hypertension (36.8%) categories. Respondents need to have regular medical check-up because most of them have risk factors for cardiovascular disease, and implement "CERDIK" behavior. Examination of LDL, HDL, glucose levels, measurements body weight and body height, should also be carried out to calculated the risk level of cardiovascular disease. The Company plans to carry out routine medical check-up for employees.

Abstract

Adequate fluid intake is associated with students' attention, memory function, and cognitive performance. Sekolah Alam Ar Royyan, one of the schools highlighted in the G20, needs assistance with students' low water drinking behavior. The hydration team's preliminary research found that most students were mild-moderate dehydrated, which was closely related to action. This activity aims to build awareness of the school and its community to build a culture of drinking enough water at school. The method used was action research involving school administrators, students, and teachers. The researcher identifies specific problems, collects relevant data, analyzes the data, and then decides on the needed actions to overcome these problems. After implementing a series of activities, the team conducted the evaluation. The results showed that eight out of ten students were moderately dehydrated, had low water drinking habits at school, and had limited availability of clean drinking water. After conducting activities with a participatory approach, water drinking at school began to increase, although yet to be significant, and the school has provided drinking water in gallons that students can access while at school in each classroom. This activity concludes that there has been an increase in awareness from the entire school academic community about fulfilling the adequacy of students' drinking water at school.

Abstract

During its progression, a stunted kid will have challenges with cognitive development and educational failure, which slows down the child's capacity to absorb knowledge and, eventually, leads to low productivity as an adult. The nutritional health of pre-school children should be carefully monitored since this era is crucial as it sets the stage for a child's future growth. Educating parents of preschool-aged children on the need of a healthy diet in warding off stunting is the overarching goal of this community service (Pengabmas) project. Lectures, Q&A sessions, and group discussions were the means of instruction for this task. Fifty participants from the working area of the Dungingis Health Center in Tolitoli Regency who are parents of preschool-aged children will be the focus of this program. Knowledge increased from 38% to 85% according to the findings of the post-test that was administered. Parents' understanding of the need of a healthy diet for pre-schoolers has grown as a result of this educational activity. The goal of the nutrition program at the Dungingis Community Health Center is to help parents better understand how to meet their pre-school children's nutritional needs by educating them about balanced nutrition at least once every three months.

Abstract

Anemia is a significant health problem among adolescent girls, mainly due to increased iron demand during growth and menstruation. SKI data in 2023 states that the prevalence of teenage anemia is 21%. This service aims to reduce the prevalence of anemia in adolescent girls through the socialization of the CARE Application (Prevent Teenage Anemia) and the provision of blood supplement tablets at MTsN Pangkep. This activity involved 60 female students as participants, with methods that included health education through videos, hemoglobin checks, anthropometric measurements (weight, height, upper arm circumference), and distribution of blood supplement tablets by the local Puskesmas. The community service team acted as facilitators, with support from UKS teachers and Puskesmas health workers. The results showed that the structured and collaborative approach effectively increased understanding of anemia and improved adolescent girls' health status. The activity also strengthened health literacy among participants, which may contribute to a long-term reduction in anemia prevalence. In conclusion, multifaceted interventions that combine health education and nutritional supplementation are essential in preventing anemia in adolescent girls and need to be implemented more widely in other school settings to achieve a more significant impact.

Abstract

Stunting is a global health issue that significantly impacts a country's well-being. Community empowerment, particularly through the role of posyandu (integrated health post) cadres and mothers of young children, is crucial in stunting prevention efforts. This community service program aimed to prevent stunting by educating the community using a health information pocketbook written in the local Suroboyoan language. Conducted in RW 5, Pacar Kembang Subdistrict, Surabaya, the program was attended by 30 participants, including posyandu cadres, pregnant women, and mothers of young children. The Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) method was implemented through socialization and interactive discussions. The program successfully increased the participants' average knowledge score from a pre-test score of 69.7 ± 15.19 to a post-test score of 86.7 ± 9.58, with a p-value of 0.000 (Wilcoxon test), indicating a statistically significant improvement. The use of a pocketbook based on the local language proved effective in enhancing participants' understanding of stunting prevention. This approach is not only locally relevant but also has the potential to be replicated in other areas with cultural adaptations. Additionally, this model can be integrated into community health programs to support sustainable efforts in stunting prevention and improving public health literacy.
