Abstract

Indonesian language education in higher education institutions in Indonesia faces a major challenge due to the low literacy skills of students. One solution that can be applied is to use deep learning to improve language skills. This study aims to explore the application of deep learning in Indonesian language learning with a focus on historical language analysis, spelling checking (EYD), word choice (diction), paragraph composition, and scientific writing. The method used is Systematic Literature Review (SLR) to identify and synthesize previous studies related to the application of deep learning in the context of learning. The results show that the application of deep learning can be a practical solution in efforts to improve students' understanding of Indonesian language rules through automatic feedback that helps improve spelling, sentence structure, and word choice. This approach accelerates the learning process, improves writing quality, and supports the development of students' scientific writing skills. Deep learning provides a more interactive and applicable approach to learning Indonesian in higher education.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze professional competence in managing student diversity in multicultural schools as well as examine learning strategies and cultural support as well as school policies in supporting multicultural educational practices. This study employs a qualitative approach, specifically a case study research design, conducted at SMP Negeri 1 Mertoyudan, Magelang Regency, which has a diverse student population in terms of religion, ethnicity, and academic ability. Data collection was carried out through observations, semi-structured interviews with principals, teachers, and students, and school policy documentation. The results of the study show that professional competence is reflected through an inclusive attitude, social sensitivity, and ethical commitment in safeguarding the learning rights of all students, including minority groups. Teachers apply inclusive learning strategies, such as active tolerance, heterogeneous group work, and differentiated learning, to accommodate differences in academic ability. A harmonious and conflict-free school culture also supports multicultural practices, although there are still structural obstacles in the fulfillment of religious education for minority students due to limited educators. This study concludes that professional competence and inclusive pedagogic strategies play an important role in maintaining harmony and quality of learning in multicultural schools with more affirmative and sustainable education policies.

Abstract

English has become the most widely spoken language among speakers of various languages all over the world (Wang & Fang, 2020). Therefore, the annual increase in individuals acquiring English is 12 (Schreiber, 2019). In recent years, native English teachers have been prioritized in English education in Indonesia (Zhang & Solarz, 2022) because of the language authenticity in the classroom. The concept of "native speakerism" indicates that native English teachers are the ideal teachers in language education (Holliday, 2006), while non-native English teachers are the least ideal English teachers. The purpose of this study is to analyze students' proficiency in NEST and NNEST classes, as well as to investigate their motivation and teacher preferences. The study comprised 50 eleventh-grade EFL learners from two courses at a high school in East Indonesia. A mixed method was used to complete the study. These included finding the average test scores before and after the study. The results were compared using paired sample t-tests and semi-structured interviews. The objective was to ascertain whether this method could enhance students' motivation and preferences for English skills. The findings revealed that students instructed by native English teachers excelled in speaking competencies, whereas those educated by non-native English teachers performed better in written abilities, especially grammar. The purpose of this study is to raise awareness of "native speakerism" among students and teachers, and it provides various research implications for enhancing English instruction and student learning.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the forms of compliance and violations of the principles of politeness of language among students in communicating with Indonesian language teachers through social media WhatsApp based on the communication context according to Hymes' theory. This study uses a qualitative approach with descriptive methods. The research data are in the form of written utterances of students to Indonesian language teachers obtained from WhatsApp messages in the 2024/2025 academic year. The data collection technique was carried out using the documentation method, while the data analysis technique was carried out by grouping the data based on compliance and violations of the principles of politeness of language according to Leech's politeness theory and examined based on Hymes' SPEAKING context components. The results showed that of the 30 student utterances analyzed, there were 21 utterances that complied with the principles of politeness of language and 9 utterances that violated the principles of politeness of language. The analysis of the communication context showed that in general, student utterances took place in a polite communication context and were in accordance with the norms of language interaction, although there were still some utterances that did not comply with the principles of politeness of language. Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that students' politeness of language in communicating with teachers through social media still needs to be improved. Therefore, an understanding of the principles of politeness is important to instill in educational settings to create more polite, effective, and socially normative communication.

Abstract

This study aims to (1) examine the musical structure of the Togo Chant as part of the sacred tradition of the Pati Karapau Customary Ceremony on Palu’e Island, and (2) develop a Togo Chant learning module as cultural arts teaching material for high school students to support the preservation of local culture. The research employs a qualitative descriptive approach and the Research and Development (R&D) method. The qualitative approach is applied to analyze the musical structure through song transcription, observation of musical functions, and studies of melody, rhythm, and composition. Meanwhile, the development of teaching materials follows the ADDIE model, which includes the stages of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. Data collection was conducted through documentation, music transcription, and validation by subject matter and instructional design experts to assess the feasibility of the module. Data analysis involved descriptive techniques for musical structure and percentage analysis for module feasibility, as well as effectiveness testing through comparison of students’ pretest and posttest results. The findings indicate that the Togo Chant is diatonic music with a compositional structure consisting of an introduction, body, and conclusion, and serves ritualistic, entertainment, and religious functions. The developed learning module received a “good” category with an expert feasibility rating of approximately 80%. Furthermore, the module proved effective in improving student learning outcomes, as evidenced by an increase in average knowledge scores from 44.75 to 72.25 and skill scores from 50.5 to 80.5, with a significance level of < 0.05. The Togo Chant holds significant musical and cultural value that warrants preservation, and the developed learning module is deemed feasible and effective for use in high school cultural arts education. Integrating traditional music into formal education is a relevant strategy to strengthen cultural identity while enhancing students’ learning experiences.

Abstract

Teacher leadership style plays a crucial role in determining the success of English language learning, particularly in teaching Generation Z students, who are characterized by their digital, critical, and dynamic nature. However, the implementation of teacher leadership styles often faces different challenges in school contexts with diverse religious backgrounds. This study aims to identify dominant and effective teacher leadership styles in English language learning and analyze the challenges and mitigation strategies implemented by teachers in Islamic and non-Islamic schools in Jambi Province. The main problem of this research lies in the lack of in-depth exploration of teacher leadership practices in addressing the learning needs of Generation Z in the context of multicultural and multireligious education. This research uses a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and classroom observations, then analyzed using thematic analysis. The results show that transformational, instructional, and ethical leadership styles are the most dominant and effective styles applied by teachers. These leadership styles have a positive impact on the motivation, engagement, and learning climate of Generation Z students. In conclusion, adaptive and value-based teacher leadership is the key to successful English language learning in schools with diverse religious backgrounds.

Abstract

The transformation towards a smart campus is no longer an option, but an urgent necessity for universities in Indonesia to survive and excel in the digital age. The implementation of technology in the three pillars of higher education is key to improving efficiency, educational quality, and global competitiveness. This study aims to examine the adoption, implementation, and integration of technology in the implementation of the three pillars in Indonesian universities using a qualitative approach. The results of the study show the formation of a digital learning ecosystem model consisting of the following main components: strong technological infrastructure (campus internet and Wi-Fi); hardware and software, such as LMS; competent human resources through continuous training; and active student involvement in digital learning. Other components that support this ecosystem include digital content, data-based evaluation, institutional policies such as green technology, system interoperability, and digital communication tools. The main challenges in implementation are uneven digital literacy, funding constraints, and resistance to change. However, through regular training strategies, policy strengthening, and inclusive change management, smart campuses in Indonesia have the potential to become a key strategy for creating adaptive, innovative, and globally competitive higher education.
