Abstract

Nutrition training programmes for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) have great potential to improve the welfare and productivity of the workforce. This study used mixed methods research with quantitative and qualitative approaches. A total of 120 workers in the SME sector in the Anak Air health centre working area were selected as the research sample. Data were collected through a questionnaire designed based on relevant nutrition indicators, such as diet, frequency of consumption of nutritious food, and health status of workers. The quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistical tests to describe the distribution of baseline data, as well as inferential tests to assess significant differences between pre- and post-training intervention outcomes. Qualitative in-depth interviews and focus group discussions (FGDs) were conducted to gain an indepth understanding of workers' perceptions, challenges faced, and recommendations for programme development. The results showed that the nutrition training had a significant impact on improving the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours of workers related to healthy nutrition after attending the training. When food and macronutrient availability is closer to the proportion of healthy consumption patterns, there is a possibility of reducing stunting in the neighbourhood.

Abstract

This study adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative techniques, to evaluate household hazardous waste management practices. Data were collected through surveys, in-depth interviews, and direct observations. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics to measure community awareness levels and the effectiveness of waste management infrastructure, while thematic analysis was applied to qualitative data to identify key issues and patterns in community behavior. The findings highlight the effectiveness of community empowerment programs in improving knowledge and practices, with recognition of hazardous waste types increasing to 85%, understanding of associated hazards to 82%, and a reduction in littering behavior from 65% to 20%. These results underscore the importance of multi-stakeholder collaboration, infrastructure enhancement, and the integration of circular economy principles to achieve sustainable waste management. Abstract

Uncontrolled screen time duration can negatively impact the development of 5-year-old children. This community service activity aims to provide education on screen time management to support their optimal development at TPA Al Amiin, Kediri City. Through socialization, training, and mentoring methods for parents and caregivers, this initiative increases awareness of the adverse effects of excessive screen time and provides practical strategies for managing it wisely. The effectiveness of the training was evaluated using pre-tests and post-tests, revealing a significant improvement in participants’ knowledge, with an average pre-test score of 60% and a post-test score of 88%. The results suggest that structured education on screen time management plays a crucial role in supporting the optimal development of 5-year-old children and can serve as an intervention model applicable in other early childhood education setting.

Abstract

Stunting is a significant public health problem in Indonesia, including in East Kalimantan. Purpouse: This study aims to identify factors that influence pregnant women's nutrition awareness in rural Samarinda and develop effective strategies to improve nutrition education to prevent stunting. Methods: The study used a qualitative and quantitative approach (mixed-methods) to obtain a comprehensive picture of the level of awareness and understanding of balanced nutrition among pregnant women. Qualitative in-depth interviews and observations were used to understand the social, cultural, and economic factors that contribute to the nutritional consumption patterns of pregnant women in rural South Indonesia. Results: The results showed that most pregnant women had moderate (45%) and low (30%) levels of nutritional awareness. Education level (60%) and family support (65%) had the highest influence on pregnant women, at 60% and 65%, respectively. Conclusion: The findings of the study suggest that nutrition interventions should not only be conducted from an educational aspect but also take into account social and cultural aspects to be more effective in improving pregnant woman's nutritional awareness and preventing stunting, especially through more intensive and community-based education.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease that has increased significantly in the last two decades, especially in the elderly population. This study aims to design and implement a comprehensive health education and diabetic wound care program for the elderly in urban communities. Methods. This study involved 30 elderly people who suffer from type 2 diabetes mellitus and live in the Padang Pasir Village area. The research instruments consisted of a knowledge questionnaire on diabetic wound care and a foot care skills observation sheet, which had been tested for validity and reliability in a previous study. Data was collected through questionnaires that were completed before and after the intervention. Results. The average overall knowledge score increased from 57.9  10.5 at the pre-test to 82.6  8.4 at the post-test, with a difference of +24.7 points. The knowledge aspect of foot wound prevention showed the highest increase, from 58.0  9.8 to 85.5  7.5, which reflects that after education, the elderly are more aware of the importance of preventive measures such as the use of appropriate footwear and regular foot examinations. Statistical analysis using paired t-test showed that the increase in knowledge and skills of the elderly after education was significant (p = 0.000). Conclusion. The educational intervention designed in this study was statistically and clinically effective, and can be recommended for wider implementation as part of a strategy to improve the quality of life of elderly people with diabetes.

Abstract

Background. One of the main barriers to antenatal care is poor knowledge about pregnancy danger signs and the importance of regular ANC visits. This study used a descriptive qualitative approach with a Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) design to describe and evaluate the effectiveness of educational activities and assistance for pregnant women in preparing for safe childbirth in health-prone areas. Methods. Data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and focus group discussions (FGDs) with pregnant women, health cadres, and local medical personnel. Pre- and postintervention evaluations were conducted using questionnaires that measured changes in pregnant women's knowledge, readiness, and anxiety levels towards childbirth. Results. After the educational intervention, there was a significant increase in the readiness of pregnant women to face childbirth, with the average score increasing from 46.1 before the intervention to 79.2 after the intervention. The level of anxiety decreased from an average score of 71.5 to 43.9. Maternal knowledge about planning for delivery places increased from 49.3 to 81.5 after the education intervention. Husband/family participation in childbirth preparation increased from a mean score of 38.7 to 72.0 after the program. Conclusions. The educational and mentoring program implemented at the community level has shown effectiveness in increasing knowledge and readiness, as well as reducing anxiety. It is recommended that this program be integrated into the primary health care system and supported by policies that encourage active family participation in maternal and child health.

Abstract

To evaluate the effectiveness of educational interventions and demonstrations of balanced nutrition menus on increasing the knowledge of mothers of toddlers. This study used a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental design of one group pretest-posttest design. The participants were mothers who had children aged 0-5 years and actively participated in Posyandu activities in the local Puskesmas work area. Before and after the intervention, the level of knowledge of respondents was measured using a validated questionnaire instrument, containing 20 multiple-choice questions about the concept of balanced nutritional, types of food, balanced portions, and toddler food processing techniques. The results of the inferential analysis using the paired sample t-test showed that there was a significant difference between the pretest and posttest scores (p < 0.05). Community-based nutrition education programs accompanied by direct demonstrations are highly recommended as a strategy to increase community nutrition literacy, especially in efforts to prevent toddler nutrition problems such as stunting and malnutrition.

Abstract

The implementation of the Clean and Healthy Living Behaviour (PHBS) programme in the elementary school environment constitutes a significant preventive measure in the reduction of the incidence of infectious diseases. The present research employs a descriptive qualitative approach through a participatory-based community service method that focuses on the implementation and evaluation of the effectiveness of the PHBS Program in preventing infectious diseases in the primary school environment. The target audience comprised 30 students in grades IV to VI, three homeroom teachers, and School Health Unit (UKS) administrators, all of whom participated in every stage of the activity. The qualitative data was analysed descriptively by comparing pretest and posttest scores, while qualitative data were analysed using data reduction techniques, thematic categorisation and narrative interpretation to obtain a more holistic picture of changes in students' knowledge, attitudes, behaviour, and collective awareness of the importance of healthy living. The programme has been demonstrated to be effective in the transformation of theoretical understanding into concrete habits within the school environment through the implementation of interactive, visual-based, and hands-on educational approaches, including role play and simulation. Its success has been demonstrated as a preventative strategy against infectious diseases, as well as an effective character-building approach for students in maintaining hygiene and health independently and sustainably.

Abstract

The present study aims to investigate the impact of community service based on environmental education on increasing environmental awareness among Indonesian youth. The present study employed a descriptive quantitative approach, utilising a pre-experimental design of a single group, pretest-posttest type. These coding techniques were employed to identify narrative patterns, group dynamics and the supporting and inhibiting factors that emerged during the learning process. The descriptive analysis demonstrated a significant increase in all indicators of environmental awareness following the implementation of the community service-based education programme, including participants' knowledge, attitudes, behaviours, and self-efficacy. Furthermore, a significant increase in attitudes was observed, from an initial score of 68.2 to a post-intervention score of 86.7. These results underscore the significance of programme design that integrates critical learning theory, transformative approaches, and community participation in fostering a generation that is aware of, concerned about, and actively engaged in environmental sustainability. It is hoped that this initiative will set a precedent for sustainable community service and make a meaningful contribution to the development of a future-oriented environmental agenda.
