Abstract

Mathematical metaphorical thinking ability is essential for students to transform abstract concepts into more concrete ideas, thereby facilitating in-depth understanding and connections between mathematical topics. This research aims to explore of mathematical metaphorical thinking ability of eighth-grade students when they engage in the Creative Problem Solving (CPS) learning process. The CPS model was chosen because its structured thinking stages especially the Idea Finding phase are expected to trigger a strong divergence thinking process in metaphor formation. This study used a qualitative approach with eighth-grade students as the purposefully selected subjects. Data were collected through a mathematical metaphorical thinking ability test instrument followed by semi-structured interviews to identify the level and type of metaphors used. The results of the analysis show that the CPS learning environment successfully activated and mapped the use of various mathematical metaphors in students. Students who showed high metaphorical ability tended to construct more original and relational metaphors, which played an important role in complex problem-solving. Conversely, students with moderate ability mostly used conventional or functional-structural metaphors to clarify initial understanding. The conclusion of this study confirms that the integration of CPS is an effective strategy for identifying and honing the potential for mathematical metaphorical thinking in junior high school students, providing a basis for improving mathematics teaching strategies centered on creativity.

Abstract

This study aims to develop a problem–based learning video delivered through Google Sites on the topic of light waves and to examine its practicality and effectiveness in improving students’ mathematical representation and critical thinking skills. The research employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the ADDIE model, from analysis to evaluation. Feasibility assessments were conducted by physics lecturers and teachers, while field implementation involved students of MAN 3 Sleman in the 2024/2025 academic year, selected through cluster random sampling. Research instruments consisted of pretest–posttest assessments and questionnaires, and data analysis included expert validation, students’ responses, and multivariate effectiveness testing. The results indicate that the developed instructional video is feasible, practical, and effective in enhancing mathematical representation and critical thinking skills. The novelty of this study lies in integrating problem–based learning into an interactive video format organized within a structured Google Sites ecosystem. Practically, the product enables teachers to use the video as a problem-triggering medium and as support for students’ independent learning processes.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the forms of students’ critical thinking failures in solving problems on the topic of Systems of Linear Equations in Two Variables (SPLDV) based on their levels of self-efficacy. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach involving three eighth-grade students from SMPN 15 Muaro Jambi, selected through purposive sampling to represent high, medium, and low levels of self-efficacy. Data were collected through a critical thinking test based on the FRISCO indicators, in-depth interviews, observation of students’ cognitive processes, and documentation of their problem-solving steps. The findings indicate that students’ critical thinking abilities are still not optimal, particularly in the indicators of Reason, Inference, and Overview. Students with high self-efficacy demonstrated good understanding of the context and were able to construct mathematical models accurately, but they were still weak in interpreting results and reflecting on their solutions. Students with medium self-efficacy made algebraic reasoning errors and failed to evaluate the reasonableness of their answers. Meanwhile, students with low self-efficacy experienced difficulties across all stages, including understanding the context, selecting appropriate strategies, and evaluating their final solutions. These results reveal that differences in self-efficacy levels significantly influence the quality of students’ critical thinking processes. This study highlights the need to strengthen both cognitive and affective aspects to enhance students’ critical thinking skills in mathematics learning. Abstract

This research aimed to determine the effect and the magnitude of the effect of the Error Analysis Based Learning model on the mathematical literacy ability of eighth-grade students at SMPN 13 Mataram during the 2025/2026 academic year. This research was a quasi experiment with a posttest only control group design. The population of this study was all 11 eighth-grade classes, totaling 426 students. The sample was selected using the cluster random sampling technique, resulting in two classes: class VIII-I as the control class with 38 students, which used Direct Instruction, and class VIII-F as the experimental class with 38 students, which used the Error Analysis Based Learning model. Data were collected through a mathematical literacy ability test and analyzed using normality and homogeneity tests. Based on the data analysis, the average mathematical literacy ability score of the experimental class students (81.71) was higher than that of the control class (51.75). The result of the Two-Tailed Independent Samples t-test showed a significance value (sig) of 0.000<0.05, meaning there was a significant difference in the average mathematical literacy ability scores between the control and experimental classes. The magnitude of the effect, calculated using the effect size formula, was 2.220, which indicates that the influence provided falls into the very high category. Therefore, it can be concluded that the Error Analysis Based Learning model has a significant effect on the mathematical literacy ability of eighth-grade students at SMPN 13 Mataram.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe the characteristics of students' abilities in completing Partial Differential Equation (PDP) modeling project. This is motivated by the problem of students' difficulties in solving PDP applied problems, where the questions refer to modeling project assignments. This study is considered important because previous studies have examined more individual abilities, while projects have a broader scope, including the ability to solve problems by interaction. PDP Modeling Project are divided into four stages, namely: (1) Problem Context, (2) PDP Modeling, (3) PDP Model Completion, and (4) Example and solutions. This type of research is descriptive qualitative, conducted on students of the Mathematics Education, FKIP, University of Mataram. The instruments are project assignments and presentation assessment sheets. The results showed that the results of the project assignments were grouped into 3 categories, namely Unstructured (TT) which gave rise to inappropriate mathematical models because they were still in the form of ordinary differential equations instead of partial differential equations, the most dominant being 40% Incompletely Structured (T-TL) which gave rise to partial differential equation models but were inappropriate in applying them to case examples, and Completely Structured (T-L) which were able to carry out the project stages which included the problem context, PDP modeling, model completion, and solving the case correctly. The results of the PDP modeling project categorization can be mapped to the level of understanding that describes the characteristics of students who make scientific contributions leading to differentiated learning strategies and TaRL.

Abstract

Mathematics learning not only serves as a means of mastering concepts and procedures, but also as a space for shaping scientific attitudes that are reflected in scientific ethics. This study aims to systematically examine the integration of scientific ethics in mathematics learning and its contribution to the development of students' reflective thinking skills. The study uses the PRISMA-based Systematic Literature Review (SLR) based on PRISMA by examining Scopus-indexed articles published between 2020 and 2025. Inclusion criteria included empirical and conceptual articles discussing mathematics learning, scientific ethics, and students' reflective thinking, while exclusion criteria included irrelevant articles, duplicates, and non-Scopus publications. From the selection process, 11 final articles were obtained and analyzed using descriptive-qualitative techniques based on indicators of scientific ethics, mathematics learning strategies for reflective thinking, and trends in the development of students' reflective thinking. The results of the study show that the integration of scientific ethical values such as academic honesty, careful reasoning, the ability to justify, and openness to various problem-solving strategies contributes significantly to improving the quality of students' cognitive reflection. Learning that emphasizes discussion, critical dialogue, and analysis of the thinking process has proven effective in internalizing scientific values. Theoretically, this study enriches the conceptual framework of mathematics learning by placing scientific ethics as the foundation for the development of reflective thinking, while also providing direction for the development of learning designs that are oriented towards process and academic values.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effect of the Think Pair Share (TPS) type of cooperative learning model on students’ conceptual understanding of mathematics, specifically on the topic of Three-Variable Linear Equation Systems. The research was conducted at SMAS Budisatrya Medan using a quantitative approach with an experimental method and a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design. The sample consisted of 64 tenth-grade students divided into two groups: an experimental class that received instruction using the Think Pair Share model, and a control class that was taught through conventional methods. The pretest results indicated that the average initial score of students in the experimental class was 6.62, while the control class averaged 5.50. After the intervention, the posttest scores increased to 17.75 in the experimental class and 14.00 in the control class. The difference in score improvement was statistically significant, as evidenced by a t-test result of t = 6.387 with a significance level of p = 0.000. These findings suggest that the Think Pair Share model significantly enhances students’ conceptual understanding of mathematics compared to traditional teaching methods. The researchers recommend the use of this model as an effective alternative for mathematics instruction, as it not only improves learning outcomes but also fosters social interaction, critical thinking, and students’ self-confidence. Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of implementing the Game-Based Learning (GBL) model on students' problem-solving abilities in the topic of Linear Equations in One Variable (LEOV) at MTsN 1 Kutacane. This study employs an experimental research method with a pretest-posttest control group design. The research sample consisted of 60 seventh-grade students, divided into two groups: the experimental group, which applied the GBL model using the Wordwall application, and the control group, which used conventional teaching methods. Based on the data analysis results, there was a significant difference in learning outcomes between the two groups, as indicated by a p-value < 0.05. The average N-Gain value for the experimental group was 42.97% with a moderate category, while the control group achieved an N-Gain value of 23% with a low category. Thus, the Game-Based Learning model is effective in improving students' mathematical problem-solving abilities.
