Abstract

This study aims to identify students’ difficulties in solving Two-Variable Linear Equation System (SPLDV) problems in terms of their computational thinking skills and levels of self-confidence. The study incorporates four indicators of computational thinking combined with students’ self-confidence levels to examine their patterns of difficulty more comprehensively. A qualitative case study approach was employed, involving two ninth-grade students from MTsN Muaradua who were selected based on the results of a self-confidence questionnaire and a computational thinking test. Data were collected through questionnaires, written tests, and semi-structured interviews. The findings show that students with high self-confidence were able to solve SPLDV problems across all four indicators through logical, reflective, and systematic steps. In contrast, students with low self-confidence experienced difficulties at the abstraction stage and particularly at the generalization stage when required to formulate a general equation from the obtained results. Low self-confidence led to hesitation in connecting relationships between variables and hindered reflective thinking. These findings indicate the need to strengthen affective aspects alongside the development of computational thinking in SPLDV learning.

Abstract

A persistent issue in mathematics education at the elementary level is students’ difficulty in comprehending problems, which consequently leads to low learning outcomes. This study aims to analyze teachers’ and students’ needs as well as their experiences in mathematical problem solving. A descriptive qualitative method was employed, involving 30 student respondents and 12 teacher respondents. Data were collected through a needs analysis questionnaire concerning the learning media currently used. The results indicate that, in general, the preferred learning media include images and videos that can be accessed repeatedly at any time, provide explanations accompanied by examples, have a duration of 5–10 minutes, and incorporate real-life problem contexts. Moreover, the most effective learning process is suggested to employ real-world contexts through the PMRI (Indonesian Realistic Mathematics Education) approach. Students’ problem-solving experiences serve as indicators of mathematical competence; however, the stage requiring the most instructional intervention is the implementation phase, particularly in connecting mathematical concepts to everyday life situations. The findings underscore the importance of providing learning media that align with students’ and teachers’ needs and implementing contextual approaches to enhance students’ mathematical competence.

Abstract

This study started from the problem of low interest in learning and lack of understanding of mathematical concepts in elementary school students, especially in the material of circles. To overcome this problem, an inquiry-based learning approach was used which was supported by animated video media. By using an inquiry learning approach assisted by animated videos, this study aims to determine its effect on students' interest in learning and understanding of mathematical concepts. The research activities were carried out in class IV SDN 4 Pringgabaya in the 2024/2025 academic year using a quantitative approach and a quasi-experimental design of the nonequivalent control group design type. The research subjects were divided into two groups, each consisting of 26 students, namely the experimental group and the control group. Data were collected through a questionnaire to assess learning interest and a written test to measure understanding of mathematical concepts. Based on the results of the normality test, the data were not normally distributed, so data analysis was carried out using the Mann-Whitney nonparametric test. The results of the analysis showed a significance value of 0.000 for both aspects studied, namely learning interest and conceptual understanding (p <0.05), indicating a significant difference between the two groups. This shows that the use of animated video-assisted inquiry has proven effective in increasing learning interest and understanding of elementary school students' mathematical concepts.

Abstract

This study aims to develop E-LKPD based on the Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) Approach on the material of circles with a woven context for grade VIII junior high school students. This development research uses the Tessmer model consisting of a preliminary stage including analysis of students, curriculum, and teaching material needs, while the prototyping stage includes design, validation, and trial of E-LKPD. Data collection was carried out using interview methods, observations, questionnaires, and concept understanding tests. Based on the analysis results, it was found that students still experience obstacles in understanding the concept of circles due to limited context-based teaching materials and the unavailability of a curriculum that supports the integration of local wisdom, such as the use of woven rope. The developed E-LKPD is considered to have met the validity criteria (average score of 89.7%), practical (average score of 84%), and had a potential effect (average score of 88.8%). The CTL approach with a woven context increased students' motivation, involvement, and appreciation of local culture. This study produced an E-LKPD that was suitable for use as an interactive mathematics learning media that was relevant to students' daily lives.

Abstract

This study presents a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of research on Computational Thinking (CT) in mathematics education, based on Scopus-indexed publications from 2015 to 2025. CT—encompassing higher-order cognitive skills such as decomposition, pattern recognition, abstraction, and algorithmic thinking—has gained increasing relevance in 21st-century mathematics instruction. The study aims to map the development of research in this domain by analyzing seven key aspects: publication trends, author productivity, institutional productivity, journal productivity, international collaboration patterns, co-word relationships, and thematic evolution. A total of 165 English-language journal articles were analyzed using RStudio in conjunction with the Bibliometrix package. The results indicate a rapid annual publication growth rate of 23.11%, reflecting heightened global interest in the topic. Most publications resulted from collaborative research, with notable international partnerships, particularly involving Southeast Asian countries such as Indonesia. Frequently occurring keywords included "computational thinking," "students," and "engineering education," highlighting the emphasis on student-centered and interdisciplinary approaches. The co-word network and thematic mapping revealed strong linkages between CT and STEM education, project-based learning, curriculum development, and educational equity. Digital tools, including Scratch, robotics, and gamified learning platforms, shape the research landscape. However, persistent challenges remain, including limited teacher preparedness and unequal access to resources. This study contributes to educational innovation by illustrating how CT transforms mathematics pedagogy into a more contextual, technology-integrated, and collaborative practice. The findings are intended to inform educators, policymakers, and researchers in advancing curriculum reform and strategic research planning to enhance CT implementation across diverse educational contexts.

Abstract

Mathematical literacy is an essential 21st-century competency. However, national assessment results and international studies such as PISA indicate that Indonesian students’ mathematical literacy remains below the average. A similar condition was found at SMP Negeri 1 Pangenan, where this research was conducted. Based on an intrinsic motivation questionnaire administered to 34 students, their motivation levels were classified into three categories: high (), medium (), and low (). This study aims to explore students’ mathematical literacy skills based on their levels of intrinsic motivation. The research employed a qualitative descriptive–exploratory approach. The subjects were selected using purposive sampling, consisting of six eighth-grade students representing each level of intrinsic motivation. Data were collected through intrinsic motivation questionnaires, mathematical literacy tests, semi-structured interviews, classroom observations. Data were analyzed through the stages of data reduction, data display, conclusion drawing. The findings show that: (1) Students with high intrinsic motivation demonstrated excellent performance in almost all components of mathematical literacy, accompanied by strong learning control, self-confidence, and full engagement. (2) Students with medium intrinsic motivation showed fairly good but inconsistent performance, particularly in reasoning, the use of symbols. Their learning control and self-confidence were not yet stable. (3) Students with low intrinsic motivation tended to perform at a fair to low level, with weak motivation and low engagement. These findings indicate that there are clear differences in mathematical literacy performance based on students’ levels of intrinsic motivation. This study recommends implementing learning approaches that take motivational variations into account to optimize students’ mathematical literacy

Abstract

This study aims to analyze junior high school students’ critical thinking skills in solving problems related to Systems of Linear Equations in Two Variables (SPLDV). The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach and was conducted at SMP Negeri 9 Kota Jambi involving 32 ninth-grade students. Data were collected through contextual essay-type SPLDV tests designed based on six critical thinking indicators proposed by Facione, namely interpretation, analysis, evaluation, inference, explanation, and self-regulation. In-depth interviews were also conducted to support and clarify the test results. Data analysis followed an interactive model consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that students’ critical thinking skills have not developed evenly across all indicators. Interpretation skills were relatively better developed, while evaluation, inference, explanation, and self-regulation remained at low levels. Most students were able to identify relevant information and construct mathematical models; however, they experienced difficulties in evaluating solution procedures and drawing logical conclusions. These results highlight the need for mathematics learning strategies that emphasize analytical reasoning, evaluation, and reflective thinking to enhance students’ critical thinking skills, particularly in learning SPLDV.
