Abstract

This study examines a persistent challenge in mathematics education: students' lack of fundamental skills in representing two-dimensional shapes within real-life contexts, an issue linked to a reliance on conventional teaching approaches. To address this, the study aimed to develop Adobe Flash-based interactive learning media for the topic of quadrilaterals and to evaluate the media's validity, practicality, and effectiveness in enhancing students' mathematical representation skills. Guided by the Plomp development framework, the research was conducted in three interconnected stages: an initial diagnostic phase focused on problem identification, a design and prototyping phase, and a final evaluation phase. Thirty students from class VII-D at SMP Negeri 1 Kuningan participated in the study during the second semester of the 2018/2019 academic year, having been selected via purposive sampling. Data were collected using various instruments, including validation sheets to assess the media and content, pre-test and post-test instruments, and questionnaires to gauge student feedback. The results indicate that the developed learning media met the criteria for validity and practicality; this conclusion is based on assessments by subject matter and media experts, as well as student feedback, which showed a positive response with an average rating of 95.72%. Furthermore, N-gain calculations revealed a measurable improvement in students' mathematical representation skills, with an average score of 0.69, indicating an improvement within the moderate category.

Abstract

Despite the vital role mathematical connection skills play in linking mathematical concepts to other disciplines and everyday life, previous research indicates that student achievement in this area remains suboptimal, and the specific indicators of these skills have not yet been comprehensively examined. This study aimed to describe students' skills in connecting mathematical concepts while solving algebraic word problems. A qualitative, descriptive approach was employed. The study was conducted from October to November of the 2023/2024 academic year at SMP Negeri 15 Yogyakarta, involving students from class VII H. Data were collected through tests and documentation, with the test serving as the instrument to measure students' ability to establish mathematical connections. Among the 32 participating students, the results indicated that 20 fell into the high-ability category, 2 into the medium category, and 10 into the low category. Overall, the findings reveal that the majority of class VII-H students demonstrated a high level of mathematical connection skills. The researcher recommends that educators consistently encourage students to hone these skills, for instance, by providing regular practice exercises.

Abstract

Makassar City has a tropical climate with annual fluctuations in rainfall patterns, making an accurate forecasting method necessary to support planning across various sectors. This study aims to forecast the rainfall intensity in Makassar City for the period of January–December 2024 using the Triple Exponential Smoothing method. This method was selected because it is capable of modeling time series data with trend and seasonal components. The variable used in this study was monthly rainfall intensity measured in millimeters (mm). The analyzed data consisted of monthly rainfall intensity data for Makassar City from 2018 to 2023, comprising 72 observations. The analysis was conducted by comparing the additive and multiplicative models through parameter simulation of α, β, and γ within the interval of 0–1, followed by evaluating the forecasting accuracy using the Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE). The results showed that the additive model provided better forecasting accuracy than the multiplicative model, with a MAPE value of 19.16%, while the multiplicative model produced a MAPE value of 21.97%. The forecasting results indicated that the highest rainfall was predicted to occur in January, whereas the lowest rainfall was predicted in July. These findings indicate that the additive model is more appropriate for forecasting rainfall in Makassar City and can serve as supporting information for water resource management planning, hydrometeorological disaster mitigation, and decision-making related to rainfall conditions.

Abstract

Task allocation at the Dinamis Magetan vegetable-tanned leather sandal industry is currently handled flexibly, based on workers' general availability rather than a systematic evaluation of individual processing-time efficiency, creating a risk of inconsistent completion times across its five sequential production stages. Although the Hungarian Method has been widely applied to optimize labor assignment across various Indonesian MSME sectors, its application to traditional craft industries with a flexible, multi-skilled workforce — such as vegetable-tanned leather sandal production, where workers are trained to master every stage ("pinter kabeh") rather than remain fixed to one station — remains largely unexamined. This study addresses that gap through a descriptive quantitative case study involving five workers, selected via stratified random sampling to represent five main production units: Design and Pattern, Upper Production, Insole Production, Assembly, and Finishing. Processing-time data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, analyzed manually using the Hungarian Method, and verified using the POM-QM application for Windows. The results show that the optimal assignment places Worker 1 in Design and Pattern, Worker 2 in Upper Production, Worker 3 in Insole Production, Worker 4 in Assembly, and Worker 5 in Finishing, yielding a minimum total processing time of 73 minutes per production cycle — a result consistent between manual and software calculations, and closely matching the factory's actual reported daily output. These findings indicate that, for this case, the Hungarian Method can be applied accurately and consistently to obtain an optimal assignment solution, offering craft-based MSMEs a low-cost, evidence-based reference point for workforce allocation decisions that can be adopted alongside their existing flexible rotation systems.

Abstract

Computational thinking skills among junior high school students generally remain low, while teachers seldom combine digital learning media with local culture in mathematics lessons. An ethnomathematics-based Scratch medium offers one way to close this gap, since it makes mathematics learning more contextual, engaging, and meaningful. This study set out to build such a medium and examine whether it meets standards of validity, practicality, and effectiveness for strengthening students' computational thinking. A research and development (R&D) design was applied, following the five ADDIE stages analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation with eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Pragaan as participants. Data were gathered through a validation sheet, response questionnaires from teachers and students, and pretest-posttest scores, then examined descriptively alongside the N-Gain formula. The resulting media obtained a validity score of 80%-85.5% (valid), a practicality score of 75% (fairly practical), and an N-Gain of 69% in the experimental class versus 33% in the control class (fairly effective). Overall, these results suggest that ethnomathematics-based Scratch media can support junior high school students in building stronger computational thinking skills.

Abstract

Grade X-6 students of SMA Negeri 1 Pademawu showed relatively low critical thinking ability in mathematics learning and struggled to understand quadratic function material because their previous conventional instruction lacked visual media. This study aimed to improve students' critical thinking ability by implementing the Snowball Throwing learning model assisted by GeoGebra. The researchers conducted Classroom Action Research (CAR) across two cycles involving 21 students, using student activity observation sheets, response questionnaires, and tests developed from operational critical-thinking indicators synthesized from Facione (2015), Ennis (2011), and Paul and Elder (2019). The results showed that student activity increased from 2.97 to 3.40, positive responses increased from 97.7% to 100%, and the average critical thinking score increased from 61.6 (pretest) to 70.6 (cycle I) and 80.7 (cycle II), with classical mastery reaching 81.8% and exceeding the 75% success indicator. These findings confirm that the Snowball Throwing model assisted by GeoGebra effectively improves students' activity, responses, and critical thinking ability in quadratic function material. Mathematics teachers are recommended to adopt this combined model as an alternative strategy for topics that require both visual representation and active reasoning.
