Abstract

Mastering skills in consecutive interpretation is indispensable for translator profession. The MOCK Conference, as a teaching tool, should be utilized to model the real-life conditions faced by interpreters in their work. This case study aims to identify the benefits of the MOCK Conference and the challenges encountered by trainee translators. The study involved 45 senior students from a private university in Kazakhstan. Data were collected through a survey, which included a Likert-scale questionnaire and open-ended questions for trainee translators. These were then analyzed using descriptive percentages. The results indicated that the respondents positively viewed the opportunities to develop key professional skills and competencies such as bilingual and cross-cultural competence, subject-specific knowledge, and the application of language-specific strategies. These competencies were considered by the participants to be the most essential interpreters’ skills for successful performance in their prospective careers. Additionally, the study revealed that some challenges arose during the MOCK Conference process. Stress, concentration difficulties, note-taking challenges, and time management issues were identified by the research participants as the main obstacles faced during the procedure. The core findings of the study have several implications for pre-service interpreters training, including the evaluation of positive and negative aspects of the MOCK Conference as interpreters training tool, and suggestions for future research.

Abstract

The present study aims to investigate the integration of justice-based tax education within the Pancasila Education curriculum, with particular attention to strategies, challenges, and future directions for achieving fiscal independence in Indonesia. Adopting a mixed-methods survey design, the research combined quantitative and qualitative techniques to obtain an in-depth understanding of the phenomenon. Specifically, data were collected from students enrolled in Pancasila Education courses at Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta during the even semester of 2023. The sample was selected using a proportionate stratified random sampling technique, which stratified the Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, and Faculty of Vocational Studies, to ensure adequate representation across academic disciplines. The results indicate that implementing justice-based tax education constitutes a critical component of Pancasila Education. Triangulation of data from various approaches reinforced the findings that the main challenges included low awareness of the importance of taxes among students and the general public, as well as difficulties in implementing a curriculum relevant to justice values in tax education. The study recommended several strategic measures, including the development of an inclusive tax education infrastructure, comprehensive training for Pancasila education teachers, refinement of the Pancasila education curriculum to better integrate tax justice aspects, and cross-sector collaboration to ensure the success of such integration. Continuous evaluation of justice-based tax education within Pancasila Education is also emphasised as essential to ensuring the sustainability and effectiveness of this program in increasing public understanding and participation in a fair and sustainable tax system.

Abstract

This study investigates the implementation of a value-based expressive drawing model within the framework of Cultural Education and National Character Building (PBKB) in elementary schools students. The objective is to explore how this model can enhance emotional intelligence and instill moral values in students through creative expression. To align with government policies, the study was conducted with 3rd graders at Cisarua 1, 2, and 3 Elementary Schools located in Bandung Barat Regency. The study examined: (i) the school’s vision and mission supporting Cultural Education and National Character Building (PBKB); (ii) the application of character education through value-based expressive drawing to enhance emotional intelligence in elementary school; (iii) the impact of this educational approach on students' values and personalities, as reflected in their learning outcomes; and (iv) changes in students’ attitudes, analyzed through children's drawings. The experimental methods aimed to improve lesson plans, teaching processes, instructional media, and the analysis of values in children's visual symbols. Results indicated positive shifts in students' attitudes and character values, as evidenced by progress reports over two semesters. Various national character traits were identified in children's expressive drawings, notably through the visualization of symbols of honesty, thereby demonstrating the effectiveness of value-based expressive drawing model in character education.

Abstract

The focus of this research is the importance of teaching local history, such as the five-day battle in Palembang in 1947. Students do not understand this important historical event, even though the battle took place in the middle of the city, but this local history material has not been widely used as a learning resource in schools. The aim of this research is to determine whether the involvement of student soldiers in the five-day battle in Palembang in 1947 can be integrated as a source for local history learning in schools. Qualitative research method, case study type with a historical approach. Data collection uses field studies, observations, interviews, and document studies. Data validation was carried out by triangulating data sources and theory. Data analysis starts with data presentation, reduction, and conclusion drawing. The five-day battle in Palembang in 1947 involved Indonesian soldiers assisted by the community against the Dutch, who wanted to regain control of Palembang. The involvement of young student soldiers, who were bravely involved directly in the battle, served as health workers, messengers, and public kitchen workers. The involvement of student soldiers in this battle contains historical values of struggle, heroism, and never giving up, so these historical values can be integrated as a source of history learning in schools. Its relevance as a learning resource can be seen in the history curriculum in the material on the struggle of figures in defending Indonesian independence.

Abstract

Adolescents with Cerebral Visual Impairment (CVI) face heightened risks to psychological well-being due to social barriers, reduced independence, and negative self-perception. This study investigated the efficacy of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) in enhancing psychological well-being among this population in Saudi Arabia. A quasi-experimental design with pre-test, post-test, and follow-up assessments was employed. Thirty adolescents (aged 16–18; 15 males, 15 females) with CVI and documented well-being deficits from Al Noor Institute for the Blind, Buraidah, were purposively sampled. Participants were divided into experimental (REBT intervention) and control groups (n = 15 each). The intervention comprised 27 REBT sessions delivered thrice weekly, targeting cognitive restructuring, emotional regulation, and behavioral skills (e.g., relaxation, assertiveness). Psychological well-being was measured using a researcher-adapted version of Ryff’s Psychological Well-Being Scales (PWB). Mann-Whitney U and Wilcoxon signed-rank tests analyzed between-group and within-group differences, respectively. Post-test results revealed statistically significant improvements (p < .001) across all PWB dimensions (self-acceptance, positive relations, autonomy, environmental mastery, purpose in life, personal growth) for the experimental group versus controls, with large effect sizes (r = 1.0). Within-group analysis confirmed significant pre-post gains (p = .001) in all dimensions. Follow-up assessments (vs. post-test) showed no significant decline (p > .05) in well-being scores, indicating sustained intervention effects. The REBT program effectively enhanced psychological well-being in adolescents with CVI, with benefits persisting post-intervention. Findings support REBT’s applicability in mitigating cognitive and emotional challenges specific to visual impairment. Integration of REBT into support frameworks for visually impaired adolescents in educational and therapeutic settings is recommended. Future research should validate these outcomes in larger cohorts and explore long-term impacts on academic and social functioning.

Abstract

This study examines the integration of conservation character values, as promoted by Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES), within the Tendances A2: Méthode de Françaishandbook, using an ecolinguistic framework. UNNES, a conservation-oriented university, upholds values such as creativity, humanism, honesty, and fairness, aiming to instill these principles in its students. Since the Tendances A2 handbook was developed in a French socio-cultural context, this research seeks to assess its alignment with Indonesian conservation values through an ecolinguistic lens, which focuses on the relationship between language, culture, and the environment. The study utilized intensive observation and the Bang and Døør dialog model for descriptive and interpretative analysis. The findings show that all eight conservation character values advocated by UNNES are represented in the handbook, with creativity standing out as the most prominent value, emphasizing the handbook’s potential to encourage innovative thinking. Humanism and honesty were also significant, fostering ethical and empathetic communication. This ecolinguistic approach reveals how the handbook, despite its European context, effectively embodies UNNES’s conservation ethos by reflecting the interconnectedness of language, culture, and environmental values. Consequently, the Tendances A2 handbook is highly recommended for use in French Literature courses at UNNES, as it supports both language learning and the cultivation of essential conservation values.

Abstract

This study explores waste management literacy among secondary school communities in Tangerang City, Indonesia, using the Knowledge, Attitude, Behavior (KAB) model within the 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) framework. Employing a mixed-methods sequential explanatory design, the research integrates quantitative data from 357 participants including principals, teachers, staff, and students from seven schools near the Rawa Kucing Landfill, with qualitative insights from follow up interviews. This study was applied to multiple regression and correlation analyses to evaluate relationships between knowledge, attitude, and behavior. Results show that while knowledge positively influences behavior, attitude unexpectedly correlates negatively, revealing an attitude-behavior gap. Although respondents generally hold positive attitudes toward waste management, these attitudes do not consistently translate into active engagement. The study’s qualitative phase uses interviews to identify barriers contributing to this gap, uncovering individual, social, and structural obstacles such as inadequate facilities and established waste practices that hinder effective waste management. Advocating for a comprehensive approach, the study recommends providing schools with 3R bins and training, sustainable behavior modeling by teachers, alignment of municipal waste collection with school efforts, family reinforcement of waste practices, and curricular integration of waste management. This coordinated approach seeks to bridge the attitude-behavior gap and promote sustainable waste practices across school communities in Tangerang City.

Abstract

The social phenomenon of the last decade, often characterized by extreme-radical behavior, demonstrates the significance of moderation. Moderate attitudes are essential to ensure harmony in a multi-religious society, such as Indonesia. This study aims to examine the role of religious education in fostering students' moderate attitudes. It is a qualitative study based on both primary and secondary data. The primary data were obtained through questionnaires and interviews with high school students from six religions: Islam, Catholicism, Protestantism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Confucianism across Jakarta, Tangerang, Depok, and Labuan Bajo. The secondary data were collected from online news sources and previous studies. The study was conducted from May to July 2022. The findings suggested that from the perspective of students, religious education promotes moderate attitudes by enabling them to respect differences and live in harmony. This can be achieved through three essential pillars of religious education: quality textbooks, moderate teachers, and conducive school atmosphere. Therefore, religious education is a determining element in cultivating moderate behavior that helps sustain harmony within a pluralistic society.
