Abstract

Classroom interaction is fundamental to any pedagogical practice. Through interaction, teachers accomplish the tasks of teaching and managing classroom activities. Whatever approach a new or experienced teacher takes to teaching, classroom communication mediates between teaching and learning. The teacher-student relationship is inherently asymmetrical, where the teacher has the power to establish different contexts for language use and learning in a classroom and to control student behaviour. The aim of the study is to investigate the typical discursive structures of classroom interaction to determine the different contexts for language learning. Qualitative data was collected from five schools in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. The data was analysed using theoretical and analytical models from conversation and discourse analysis. The findings revealed that teachers use their authority and power to set up contexts where learners partake in different forms of interaction, which have different implications for language learning. In some contexts, the teacher strictly controls interaction; in others, the students have more power over their interaction. Teachers must be cognisant of their choices to make informed pedagogical decisions in their language classrooms.

Abstract

This study examines Sundanese women's participation in legislative institutions through a structuration theory approach to inform educational strategies for gender equality. The purpose of this study is to understand how structure-agent relation in Sundanese women to navigate and challenge socio-political barriers for equality. We used a qualitative phenomenological approach to collect data through in-depth interviews, observations, and document analysis, aided by NVivo 12 software for data reduction and coding. The research findings reveal a complex dynamic in which structural factors significantly shape political participation, but individual agency plays an important role in challenging and changing these structures and to inspire young women. This discussion contributes to the broader debate on gender, politics, and empowerment by education in the Indonesian context. To enhance women's political involvement, we require to make Sundanese political women as an agent to inspire young generation in school which support by pedagogy that build critical and democratic sphere.

Abstract

Socio-cultural factors can contribute to the level of physical fitness. This study aims to determine the level of physical fitness of students and the role of socio- cultural influences. This research design uses a mix method explanatory that produces quantitative data and is reinforced by qualitative data. The sampling technique was purposive sampling, and the sample of this study were students with achievements in the National Sports Week (PON) who attended schools in the watershed area, with a total of 30 students. The average results of male students' physical fitness data are in the good category (48.27 ml/kg/min), and female students' physical fitness is also in the good category (36.65 ml/kg/min). This condition is supported by the socio-cultural roles experienced by students. The socio-cultural roles include the role of coaches who have a firm, disciplined, measured, and motivating attitude, the role of self-awareness of the importance of a healthy lifestyle, which is supported by the role of parents who actively remind and provide role models, social support from family and friends, the role of the influence of the socio-cultural environment such as physical activities specifically related to the local area such as hunting, farming, or driving a "jukung" to school. The role of the government in providing facilities and infrastructure in the home and school environment, and the role of teachers who require extracurricular activities, as well as cultural traditions such as dance and martial arts, have a role in shaping their physical fitness.

Abstract

This study explores the implications of fathers’ parenting on children's character with a special focus on the integration of Sundanese cultural values such as cageur (healthy), bageur (good), bener (right), singer (introspective), and pinter (smart) in fostering children's character. This research was conducted using qualitative methods and phenomenological design. The focus of this research is Sundanese fathers who live in Bandung. The city of Bandung was chosen because its population is predominantly ethnic Sundanese. The research was conducted within a period of 6 months, from February to July 2024, and was preceded by preliminary studies on Sundanese fathers’ parenting patterns conducted since 2016. The participants in this study were Sundanese fathers whose wives are employed. In families where both parents are employed, this study describes their cooperation in childcare. The results of this study show that fathers' parenting in Sundanese families, which apply Sundanese cultural values such as cageur (healthy), bageur (good), bener (right), singer (introspective), and pinter (smart), have a significant impact on children's character development. Through the application of these values, fathers play an important role in supporting children's cognitive and social-emotional development, in accordance with the developmental theories of Jean Piaget and Erik Erikson. Authoritarian parenting can hinder children's cognitive and social-emotional development, while uthoritative parenting supports a balance between discipline and independence. Permissive parenting, in turn, tends to reduce children's discipline and responsibility. Overall, the integration of Sundanese cultural values in fathers' parenting not only shapes children's strong and stable character, but also supports holistic development that includes cognitive, social, and emotional aspects.
