Abstract

The Indonesian government has instituted urban farming regulations to bolster food security and catalyze economic growth. However, implementing urban farming initiatives across various regions of Indonesia is expected to face challenges in the quality and availability of arable land, along with deficiencies in community knowledge. Hydroponics represents a sustainable agricultural approach proposed as a viable solution to address land quantity and quality limitations. This paper presents the comprehensive design and deployment of an automatic monitoring and control system tailored to hydroponic parameters using Internet of Things (IoT) technologies. This system integrates web technology with a NodeMCU microcontroller and sensor devices, such as DHT22 Sensor, SEN011 Sensor, TDS SEN0244 Sensor, DS18820 Sensor, and HC-SR04 Sensor. Web technology was successfully built to display eight hydroponic environmental data variables in real time, including nutrient levels, water pH, water level, water temperature, air temperature, air humidity, and pump performance status. The pH threshold value of water on a scale of 5.0 to 6.5 will automatically control the pH pump, the nutrient threshold value on a scale of 500 to 800 ppm will automatically control the nutrient pump, and the water height threshold value on a scale of 30 to 10 cm will automatically control the water pump. Through web technology, users can also intervene in system performance based on natural plant conditions. The entire system functionality was tested with 25 scenarios through a black box test approach, demonstrating that the hydroponic environment was monitored and controlled efficiently.

Abstract

Guha Village in Aceh Singkil lacks access to electricity from PLN, with challenging road conditions further complicating energy access. This study explores a feasible microgrid solution, assessing local renewable energy potential and economic viability using HOMER Pro software. Calculations reveal an annual energy demand of 97,334 kWh for 41 households. The analysis identifies a standalone micro-hydro system as the most cost-effective option, capable of partially meeting this demand with an annual output of 296,077 kWh. However, due to a distribution efficiency of 79.6%, the effective supply is 235,961 kWh per year. Financially, the micro-hydro system offers significant advantages, reducing the Net Present Cost (NPC) from Rp5.82 billion to Rp1.10 billion, despite a higher initial capital requirement of Rp825 million. With minimal O&M costs of Rp15 million annually and a Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) of Rp987.66/kWh, the system demonstrates substantial long-term savings. Investment metrics show a 49% Internal Rate of Return (IRR), 44% Return on Investment (ROI), and a two-year payback period, making the micro-hydro system a sustainable as cost effective energy solution for Guha Village.

Abstract

The utilization of electric power predominantly involves inductive loads, which result in lagging voltage waves that increase power consumption beyond what is effectively utilized, thereby reducing power factors and causing energy losses. To mitigate reactive power from inductive loads, capacitors are commonly installed in parallel. However, conventional fixed capacitor banks often lead to suboptimal results due to improper sizing. This study presents an innovative power factor correction device utilizing dimmer-controlled capacitors for dynamic capacitance adjustment. The research offers a cost-effective alternative to microcontroller-based systems while providing real-time adaptability for varying loads. The system enables precise control of capacitance without complex programming. The experimental approach uses six parallel-connected capacitors (2.5μF each), controlled by a dimmer circuit with TRIAC, DIAC, and potentiometer components. Testing is conducted with variable inductive loads ranging from 1.7 H to 6.8 H, simulating laboratory conditions with potential for scaling to real-world applications. The methodology includes baseline measurements, capacitor compensation, load variation analysis, and performance evaluation. Results demonstrate power factor improvement from 0.55 to 0.85 using a capacitance range of 0.6299μF to 15μF. The dimmer-controlled approach effectively increases active power while reducing reactive power from 56.198 VAR to 33.773 VAR, significantly improving voltage stability under varying load conditions.
