Abstract

This study looked at the problems EFL (English as a Foreign Language) students had in writing compound-complex sentences in academic writing. The main aim was to know both grammar problems and students’ feelings when they try to use this difficult sentence type. The researcher used a qualitative narrative inquiry method to collect deep information from semi-structured interviews and reflective journals. Participants were chosen with purposive sampling to show different levels of English skill. Thematic analysis helped to find main problems in their writing. The findings showed that most students had trouble using conjunctions in the right way, knowing the difference between independent and dependent clauses, and using punctuation correctly. Around 75% of the students said they found it hard to write compound-complex sentences. More than 60% also felt confused about how to use punctuation. The students’ first language also gave influence, and many said the teacher's feedback was not always clear. Emotional problems like fear and low confidence also made it harder for students. Working together and doing writing practice many times helped improve their writing and gave them more confidence. Students also said they wanted more clear lessons and useful workshops about sentence types. This study shows that students need special help from teachers to learn how to build compound-complex sentences, so their academic writing can be better.

Abstract

Abstract

The transformation of Indonesian pesantren in the era of globalization presents a complex challenge between preserving tradition and embracing modernity. This study aims to explore the paradoxical dynamics between maintaining pesantren’s traditional values and the demands of Islamic educational modernization. A qualitative descriptive approach through library research was employed, utilizing academic journals, books, and official documents published between 2015 and 2024. Content analysis was conducted on theories of educational modernization, pesantren cultural identity, and institutional responses to global change. The findings reveal that pesantren are actively transforming through curriculum integration, technology adoption, and institutional management development, while preserving religious traditions and the authority of kyai. The paradox of tradition and modernity emerges not as a barrier but as a unique strength in shaping globally relevant yet locally rooted Islamic education.

Abstract

Character education is a fundamental aspect of the Islamic education system that aims to shape a holistic human being, not only in terms of intellect but also moral and spiritual dimensions. In the context of the current moral crisis affecting today’s youth, the thoughts of classical scholars such as Imam Al-Ghazali have become essential references to revitalize educational values. This study aims to examine the concept of character education in the thought of Imam Al-Ghazali and analyze its relevance to the modern Islamic education system. This research is qualitative in nature using a library research approach. The population includes all of Al-Ghazali’s writings related to education and ethics. The primary sample analyzed in depth is his monumental work Ihya’ ‘Ulum al-Din, which contains Al-Ghazali’s conceptual framework on soul purification (tazkiyat al-nafs), character development, and methods of value internalization. The instruments used are documentation techniques, data reduction, concept categorization, and content analysis of primary and secondary texts. The results show that Al-Ghazali viewed character education as a process of perfecting the soul through the instillation of faith, controlling desires, and habituating virtuous conduct through exemplary modeling and self-reflection (muhasabah). This concept remains relevant in addressing the challenges of modern Islamic education, particularly in forming well-rounded, ethical, and spiritually grounded students. This study recommends integrating Al-Ghazali’s values of character education into the curriculum and educational practices of contemporary Islamic institutions.

Abstract

Seniority bullying in the dormitory environment is a phenomenon that still occurs frequently and has a negative impact on students' mental health, social development, and academic achievement. One of the prevention strategies that is starting to get attention is peer counseling, which is a peer counseling service that involves students as counselors to help their peers. This article aims to review various previous studies on the effectiveness of peer counseling in preventing seniority bullying. The research method used is literature review by examining 15 relevant international and national articles in the range of 2015–2024. The results of the study showed that peer counseling was effective in increasing anti-bullying awareness, strengthening assertive communication skills, and building a supportive social environment in the dormitory. However, its effectiveness is influenced by the quality of peer counselor training, the support of educational institutions, and the involvement of teachers and dormitory coaches. These findings confirm the importance of implementing peer counseling as a preventive strategy for seniority bullying, noting the need for professional supervision and ongoing evaluation. This research is expected to be a reference for schools and dormitories in designing evidence-based peer counseling.
