Abstract

Bangkalan Regency is predominantly Muslim. Although it is famous for its Islamic bigotry, people of other religions such as Catholics also coexist well there and have no difficulty in adapting to Muslims. The existence of a majority and minority can often lead to conflict, which can often threaten the existence of the minority. Therefore, the role of the Church as a forum for Catholics needs to be highlighted in the community. As a religious formation institution, it distributes its role to every young Catholic family to create family harmony and guide their offspring for the future of the Church and Catholics. This research uses a type of qualitative research with observation, interview, and documentation techniques.then analyzed theoretically with Pierre Bourdieu's theory of capital and arenas that can be used by individuals to control their fate and the fate of others. The location of this research was carried out in 3 Catholic Churches in Bangkalan Regency, including: St. Maria Fatima Catholic Church, St. Maria Immaculata Stasi Telang Catholic Church, and GPdI Tanjung Bumi and SDK Maria Fatima Bangkalan. That Catholics can participate in the social activities of the local community shows that the existence of Catholics in Bangkalan today is arguably quite good. Catholics in Bangkalan maintain their existence and religious sovereignty by joining local associations, participating in village activities, providing guidance to children, and providing religious education through schools. If analyzed with Bourdieu's theory, Catholics can utilize their symbolic, economic, linguistic, and social capital, they can expand their power and influence in Bangkalan. Keywords: Existence, Catholic Church, Catholics

Abstract

Abstract

This research analyzes the lyrics of Javanese folk songs, “Rek Ayo Rek” and “Lir Ilir” translated by Machine Translation, namely Google Translate. The folk songs convey cultural messages that require contextual understanding. This study evaluates the equivalence and accuracy of the translations produced, and identifies the errors that occur in the translation process. This study uses Eugene Nida's Dynamic Equivalence theory which aims to evaluate the extent to which Machine Translation can maintain the original meaning of Javanese culture. The analysis shows that the translations are structurally correct, but often miss important idioms and cultural nuances. The analysis showed that 83% of the translations in “Rek Ayo Rek” lyrics and 100% in “Lir Ilir” lyrics lost symbolism and cultural meaning due to literal translation. The findings show incomplete translations, word misinterpretation, and loss of cultural nuances, indicating the limitations of Machine Translation in translating cultural aspects. This study contributes to the development of more effective folk song translation strategies, especially in translating texts that contain cultural context. Keywords : Folk Songs, Google Translate, Lyrics, Machine Translations.

Abstract

Three-year-old children have the ability to use speech in the form of indirect speech as an effort to convey their intentions or desires to others. This research was conducted in an effort to see the pragmatic abilities possessed by 3-year-old children. A pragmatic approach with a qualitative descriptive research method is used to analyze the pragmatic abilities of 3-year-old children. Data collection techniques are carried out using recording techniques. Data was taken for one month from February to March 2023. The data in this study used a single subject in children aged 3 years. The results showed that the research subjects with a single case in children aged 3 years had good skills in using indirect speech. Indirect speech used by a single subject is done to get the wishes according to the child's expectations. Communication between parents and single subjects is also considered successful because indirect speech can be well understood by both parties, namely parents and children. Pragmatically, it can be seen that the speaker uses indirect speech to the speaker only at certain times and according to the context of the conversation so that the speaker can understand the intent conveyed by the speaker. Keywords: Indirect Speech, Pragmatics, and Communication

Abstract

The phenomenon of coffee and work from café started to spread after the COVID-19 pandemic. The younger generation in general prefers to spend a lot of time doing activities in a café for both work and social reasons. Looking at the various reasons used to always carry out activities in coffee shops and cafes is an interesting study to add to the repertoire of knowledge about consumer behavior. This study aims to answer the question of how consumer behavior underlies the decision of the younger generation to hang out at a cafe, especially a coffee shop? The preparation of scientific articles is carried out using the literature review method. The journal articles searched were limited to research from 2019 to 2024.  The keywords used were "consumer behavior", "lifestyle", "cafe", and "coffee shop". Journal articles were selected according to the following criteria: (1) Contains the results of research on consumer behavior; (2) The research was conducted with subjects from generation Y and generation Z; (3) The research was conducted in the context of activities in cafes as a place of choice. In this review, there are 8 studies that fit the theme and criteria. Some of the things supporting consumer behavior that underlie the decision of the younger generation to hang out at a cafe, especially coffee shops, are divided into self-related, social, task/work, and lifestyle. The phenomenon of coffee is becoming increasingly embedded with the work from café culture that is promoted as an alternative to working outside the office. Keywords: Coffee, Consumer Behaviour, Work From Café

Abstract

Language is the primary medium for humans to communicate and interact in social life. In pragmatic studies, language is not merely a tool for transmitting information but also a means of performing actions. This concept is reflected in the theory of speech acts introduced by Austin (1962) and later developed by Searle (1969). This research examines adolescents’ speech acts during Tapak Suci martial arts training within the Muhammadiyah Bangkalan community. The purpose of this study is to describe the forms and functions of speech acts used during training sessions and to analyze the role of language as a medium for shaping discipline, motivation, and social solidarity. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method using observation, recording, and note-taking techniques. The data were analyzed based on George Yule’s (1996) theory of speech acts, which classifies them into three categories: locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary acts. The findings reveal four main types of speech acts—directive, expressive, commissive, and declarative. Directive acts are used to give instructions, expressive acts to convey emotions, commissive acts to show commitment, and declarative acts to establish rules or group values. The results demonstrate that communication during Tapak Suci training serves not only a technical purpose but also functions as a means of character building, discipline formation, and social solidarity among members. Thus, speech acts reflect the social and religious values embedded in the moral development of Muhammadiyah adolescents in Bangkalan. Keywords: speech acts, pragmatics, adolescents, Tapak Suci, social interaction
