Abstract

This study aims to identify teachers' ability to pose problems. This study uses a descriptive method with a qualitative approach. The data collection methods used are tests, semi-structured interviews, and open interviews. The research subjects were two mathematics teachers at a senior high school. The data were analyzed using the interactive analysis model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014), which consists of three stages: (1) data condensation; (2) data presentation; and (3) conclusion drawing and verification. The results showed that both subjects posed problems using the pre-solution posing type, which is posing questions based on the given situation or information, and within-solution posing, which is reformulating questions that have already been solved. Neither subject posed problems using the post-solution posing type, which involves modifying the objectives or conditions of a solved problem to create a new problem. In conclusion, teachers' problem-posing abilities showed differences, with ON tending to be limited to pre-solution posing with learning resource constraints, while IM was more varied and coherent. However, both agreed that problem posing is beneficial if supported by appropriate learning strategies and adequate learning resources to encourage student creativity and understanding.

Abstract

Mathematical problem-solving skills are important to help learners apply mathematical concepts in everyday life. The mathematical problem-solving abilities of students at SMP Negeri 1 Bae Kudus are still considered low, as evidenced by the preliminary study results on the VII-B class students with an average score of 37.34. Based on these findings, this study aims to improve the mathematical problem-solving abilities of seventh-grade students thru the application of the Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) learning model assisted by Ethmas QR-Code media. This research uses a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design, where class VII-B is designated as the experimental group and class VII-A as the control group. The selection of the sample was conducted using the simple random sampling technique. The study population consisted of 256 students, with a sample of 2 classes comprising 64 students. Initial data analysis includes normality tests, homogeneity tests, and mean equality tests, while final data analysis involves independent two-sample t-tests, N-Gain calculations, and independent two-sample t-tests. The instrument used in this study is a test to measure students' mathematical problem-solving abilities. The results of this study indicate that: (1) The average mathematical problem-solving ability of students taught using the RME learning model with Ethmas QR-Code learning media is better compared to the average using the direct learning model. (2) There is a significant improvement in mathematical problem-solving abilities before and after the implementation of the RME model aided by Ethmas QR-Code media, with a high category of improvement. Further research is needed to study the ethnomathematics of Kudus culture and mathematical problem-solving abilities in flat shapes in order to generate innovative findings in mathematics education.

Abstract

Oil palm is a leading commodity that plays a strategic role in Indonesia’s agricultural sector. Jambi Province is one of the main producers of fresh fruit bunches (FFB) is the main harvest product of oil palm. Although production levels are high and global demand continues to increase, FFB prices tend to fluctuate, creating income uncertainty for both farmers and industry players. These fluctuations are influenced by various factors and require a modeling approach capable of capturing historical patterns in time series data that are nonlinear and volatile. This study aims to apply the Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) model to predict oil palm FFB prices in Jambi Province. GRU is selected because it is effective in processing sequential data and retaining long-term information through its update gate and reset gate mechanisms. The data used consist of daily FFB prices over the past three years. The research process includes preprocessing, normalization using the min–max scaler, data splitting (80% training and 20% testing), model training with various hyperparameter combinations, and evaluation using Mean Squared Error (MSE) and Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE). The results show that the GRU model successfully captures the historical patterns of FFB prices. The best configuration was obtained with a learning rate of 0.01, hidden size of 128, batch size of 16, window size of 5, and 100 epochs. The model achieved an MSE of 0.0418 on the training data and a MAPE of 12.82% for the 50-day forecast. These values indicate a good level of accuracy, suggesting that the GRU model is suitable as a data-driven decision support tool to enhance price stability and assist plantation business planning in Jambi Province.

Abstract

This research is driven by the importance of mathematical reasoning skills as a foundation for understanding concepts and solving mathematical problems, alongside indications of low proficiency in these skills, which is suspected to be linked to differences in personality types. The primary objective of this study is to determine the differences in mathematical reasoning abilities between extroverted and introverted students and to analyze the reasoning characteristics of each personality type. This study employs a mixed-methods approach with a sequential explanatory design, beginning with quantitative data collection through reasoning tests and the Eysenck Personality Inventory questionnaire administered to 65 grade XII MIA students at MAN 1 Bulukumba, followed by in-depth interviews with six selected subjects. The results show that: 1) there is a significant difference in mathematical reasoning abilities between extroverted and introverted students, with a significance value of 0.009; 2) Extroverted students tend to think quickly and rush, often skipping important steps in problem-solving. Conversely, introverted students tend to be more thorough and systematic in organizing their solution steps, although in some cases they still fall short in double-checking or drawing conclusions. The implication of this research is the importance of learning strategies tailored to personality types to optimize students' mathematical reasoning abilities.

Abstract

This study was based on the low learning outcomes of students in solving problems related to flat-sided shapes. The purpose of this study was to determine the learning outcomes of students in class IX.7 at SMPN 5 Padang in solving problems related to flat-sided shapes. The method used in this study is descriptive with a quantitative approach. The study subjects were selected using purposive sampling, with a sample size of 25 students. The instrument used in this study is a learning achievement test. Student learning outcomes were analyzed using a 4-point scale covering three indicators, namely: (1) the ability to write down the aspects known in the questions, (2) the ability to answer the questions, and (3) the ability to conclude the problems in the questions. The selection of study subjects was based on the number of students, categorized by their abilities: two students with very high abilities, two students with high abilities, two students with moderate abilities, two students with low abilities, and two students with very low abilities. Based on the test analysis results, it was found that 32% of students achieved high learning outcomes, 28% achieved moderate learning outcomes, 28% achieved low learning outcomes, and 12% achieved very low learning outcomes. Students with high learning outcomes tended to make mistakes in the indicator of the ability to summarize problems. Students with moderate criteria were less careful in answering questions and did not solve problems accurately. Students with low criteria often made mistakes in answering questions and solving problems. Meanwhile, students with very low criteria had difficulty writing down the known aspects of the question, answering questions, and correctly concluding problems.

Abstract

Numerical literacy is a crucial aspect of mathematics education in high school. However, a common issue is the low numerical literacy skills among students. One model that can be applied to improve students' numeracy literacy skills is the Problem Based Learning model (PBL). This study aims to investigate the influence of the PBL model on the numerical literacy skills of high school students, specifically in the topic of sequences and series. The research used a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design and a nonequivalent group design. The population for this study was all students in grade XI Social Sciences at SMA Negeri 1 Teunom. The research sample was selected using a total sampling technique, with one class designated as the experimental group and another as the control group. Data were collected using a numerical literacy test instrument in the form of essay questions on sequences and series. The data analysis was performed using the Mann-Whitney U test. The results show that students who learned using the PBL model had better numerical literacy skills compared to those who learned using a conventional teaching model. Therefore, the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model is recommended for teachers to improve students' numerical literacy skills.

Abstract

Mathematics is one of the subjects that is considered difficult, boring, and the use of mathematics learning media in schools is still less than optimal due to limited media and time. This study aims to develop learning media based on local wisdom on snakes and ladders with valid, feasible, and effective question cards to improve students' reasoning. The study uses the ADDIE development model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation). The instrument uses a validation sheet, a response questionnaire, and reasoning test questions. The developed media was tested in a limited field trial involving 6 students of class VIIA and a large field trial involving 25 students of class VIIB at SMP Diponegoro Tumpang. The validity was obtained from the validation results, the feasibility was obtained from the response questionnaire, and the effectiveness was obtained from the results of the students' reasoning test. The validation results showed very high validity. The feasibility results were very feasible, namely, in the limited field obtained a result of 3.79 and in the large field, 3.31 which means media. The effectiveness results were very effective, namely, the test question score in the large field test was 95.6%. Based on the research results, it can be concluded that the local wisdom-based learning media, snakes and ladders, developed is very valid, very feasible, and very effective for use in learning and can improve students' reasoning. It is hoped that the local wisdom-based learning media, snakes and ladders, with question cards, can be used in mathematics learning.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze students’ understanding of mathematical concepts based on gender and ability levels in the topic of polynomials at SMAN 14 Bandar Lampung. The study employed a descriptive qualitative approach involving six eleventh-grade students selected through purposive sampling to represent both male and female students with high, medium, and low levels of achievement. Data were collected through observation, tests, and interviews, and analyzed in three stages: data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that high-ability male students were able to fully meet all three indicators of conceptual understanding translation, interpolation, and extrapolation. High-ability female students met only the translation and interpolation indicators, while medium-ability male students met all three indicators. In contrast, medium-ability female students were unable to fulfill any of the indicators due to difficulties in interpreting and applying concepts. Low-ability students, both male and female, were unable to fully meet any of the indicators. Gender was found to influence conceptual understanding, with male students performing better than female students. In conclusion, differences in gender and ability levels affect students’ understanding of mathematical concepts. Therefore, learning strategies that consider individual characteristics are essential to enhance the effectiveness and meaningfulness of mathematics learning.
