Abstract

Mathematics is often perceived as an abstract discipline that is detached from student’s daily lives and cultural contexts. This perception poses a challenge in mathematics education, as students frequently experience difficulties in connecting mathematical concepts with cultural contexts and real-life situations. Therefore, a meaningful and contextual learning approach is needed. This study aims to identify and describe the mathematical concepts involved in the process of making lemang in Pontianak through an ethnomathematical perspective. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method with an ethnomathematical approach. The research subjects consisted of lemang makers and sellers in Pontianak City, West Kalimantan. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, and were analyzed using the interactive analysis model proposed by Miles and Huberman. The results show that the process of making lemang involves various activities that intuitively represent mathematical concepts, including (1) the concept of three-dimensional shapes in lemang, (2) the Pythagorean concept, (3) the concept of similarity and proportional size comparison, (4) the concept of time and production comparison, and (5) the concept of rotation in the lemang roasting process. These findings indicate that the tradition of making lemang contains mathematical values that can be integrated into learning to enhance student’s mathematical literacy and conceptual understanding in a contextual manner.

Abstract

This study examines how secondary school mathematics teachers use computational thinking (CT) in lesson planning to improve students' mathematical skills in a dimension that has been largely overlooked in the CT literature. Although CT is generally promoted as a technology-based and student-centred competency, this qualitative study shows that teachers naturally integrate core CT practices, namely decomposition, pattern recognition, abstraction, and algorithmic thinking, as implicit cognitive tools in designing learning, even in schools with limited resources and without formal CT policies. Based on an analysis of lesson plans and semi-structured interviews with 25 teachers from various school contexts, the findings indicate that CT is not applied as an external addition, but rather as a hidden heuristic for organising conceptual understanding and procedural skills. Teachers routinely break down complex mathematical procedures into structured steps, recognise patterns of student errors, devise general strategies that apply across topics, and systematically organise exercises, all without using digital devices or explicit CT terminology. This finding challenges the dominant narrative originating from developed countries, which tends to equate CT with programming or high technology, and instead positions CT as an inherent part of flexible and cross-disciplinary professional pedagogical reasoning. This research proposes a shift in the theoretical framework: CT is not only a learning objective for students, but also a cognitive resource for teachers. The implications are important for teacher education, curriculum design, and fair and contextual CT policies, while paving the way for scalable CT integration in various global contexts.

Abstract

The implementation of the Merdeka Belajar Curriculum (KMB) in lower secondary mathematics education aims to transform the educational paradigm towards critical thinking and constructivism. However, the reality on the ground shows a gap between policy vision and classroom practice. This study uses a descriptive literature review method to identify and analyze various problems in the implementation of KMB in mathematics. The results of the study indicate four main pillars of obstacles: (1) limited adaptive resources and teaching aids, (2) low professional readiness of teachers in their roles as facilitators of differentiated learning, (3) students' psychological resistance to independent learning, and (4) inconsistency in conceptual understanding among stakeholders. These findings emphasize that the success of KMB requires holistic synergy through the optimization of local resources, strengthening teacher competence in Learning Communities, and psychological interventions to build a participatory learning culture. The conclusion of this study highlights the importance of systematic mitigation strategies to ensure that KMB functions optimally in improving the quality of mathematics education sustainably.

Abstract

Technological advancements and the dynamics of educational paradigms in the 21st century require teachers to accommodate the diverse learning needs of students through flexible, student-centered approaches. In mathematics learning, the diversity of abilities, learning styles, and readiness of students in heterogeneous classrooms becomes a challenge that requires adaptive teaching strategies, one of which is differentiated instruction. This study aims to describe the challenges faced by teachers in teaching mathematics in heterogeneous classrooms and to analyze the differentiation strategies applied by teachers to address the differences in students' learning needs. The study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with the subject being a high school mathematics teacher in the Special Region of Yogyakarta. The data collection method was conducted through semi-structured interviews and documentation, then analyzed using an interactive analysis model that includes data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study indicate that the success of differentiated mathematics learning in heterogeneous classes depends not only on the methods used but also on the teacher's sensitivity in understanding the students' characteristics, readiness, background, and perceptions of mathematics learning.

Abstract

The rapid development of digital technology has led to the emergence of various innovative learning approaches, one of which is microlearning, characterized by short, focused, and flexible learning units. However, studies on microlearning are often dominated by technical and instrumental perspectives, with limited attention to philosophical foundations of education, including in the context of mathematics education. This article aims to analyze the relevance of Ki Hadjar Dewantara’s educational philosophy, particularly the Among System, to the implementation of microlearning in digital learning, with a focus on mathematics learning. This study employed a qualitative approach using a library research design. Data were obtained from Ki Hadjar Dewantara’s original works as primary sources and from scholarly articles and books on microlearning and mathematics education as secondary sources. Data analysis was conducted through content analysis, philosophical interpretation, and conceptual comparison. The findings indicate that the principles of the Among System, which emphasize guidance based on learners’ nature and the demands of the times, are conceptually aligned with the characteristics of microlearning, which is learner-centered, flexible, and contextual. In mathematics education, microlearning has the potential to support gradual conceptual understanding through structured, small learning units. These findings suggest that microlearning can be understood as a pedagogical strategy that is philosophically and educationally grounded when implemented beyond purely technological considerations.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of Mathematics Education lecturers' leadership style and academic culture on student learning engagement with self-efficacy as a mediating variable. Student learning engagement is an important aspect in the learning process in higher education, which is influenced by both internal and external factors. Lecturers' leadership style and academic culture are seen as external factors that play a role in shaping student self-efficacy as an internal factor. This study uses a quantitative approach with a survey method that collects information from a specific sample or population through systematic questions to determine the attitudes, opinions, behaviors, or characteristics of respondents. The research subjects were students of the Mathematics Education Study Program who were selected using a sampling technique, a method used to select a portion of the population (sample) to represent the entire population in a study. This technique is important in research in fields such as Statistics, Social Sciences, and Research Methodology. Data collection was carried out through questionnaires that have been tested for validity and reliability. Analysis using IBM SPSS Statistics is the process of processing and analyzing research data (usually quantitative data) with the help of SPSS statistical software to test the direct and indirect effects between variables. The results of the study indicate that lecturers' leadership style and academic culture have a significant effect on student learning engagement. Furthermore, self-efficacy was shown to act as a mediating variable, strengthening the influence of lecturer leadership style and academic culture on student learning engagement. These findings indicate that increasing student learning engagement can be optimized through developing effective lecturer leadership styles, a conducive academic culture, and strengthening student self-efficacy.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the influence of using the Game Based Learning (GBL) model assisted by Wordwall on students’ mathematical critical thinking ability, as well as to determine the extent of its impact in mathematics learning. The research employed a quasi-experimental design with a Non-Equivalent Control Group Pretest-Posttest Design, conducted in the odd semester of the 2025/2026 Academic Year at SMP Negeri 37 Medan. The sample consisted of two classes: the experimental class, which learned using the Game Based Learning model assisted by Wordwall, and the control class, which learned through conventional methods. The research instrument was a descriptive test consisting of three essay questions assessing four indicators of critical thinking ability: interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and inference. (1) The results of the analysis showed that the mean pretest score of the experimental class was 43.62, increasing to 76.24 on the posttest, while the control class increased from 48.89 to 63.02. The Mann-Whitney test yielded a significance value of , indicating a significant influence of the GBL model assisted by Wordwall on students’ critical thinking ability. (2) The N-Gain score of the experimental class was 0.5790 (medium category) and the Effect Size was 0.81 (large category), indicating that the GBL model has a strong and effective influence on improving students’ mathematical critical thinking ability.

Abstract

Regional development aims to promote economic growth in society, which is commonly measured using Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP). Sumatra Island is one of the regions that makes a substantial contribution to national economic growth. However, compared to other provinces in Sumatra, Jambi Province still records a relatively lower GRDP value. In addition, GRDP growth among regencies/municipalities in Jambi Province shows disparities and fluctuates from year to year. This condition reflects variations in the influence of economic factors both spatially and temporally. Spatial variation is indicated by the interregional linkage of GRDP and differences in the economic characteristics of each area, while temporal variation is observed through changes in annual GRDP growth influenced by commodity price fluctuations, development projects, and local economic dynamics. If the analysis is conducted using conventional linear regression without considering spatial and temporal aspects, it may violate classical assumptions, such as the presence of heteroskedasticity, residual autocorrelation, and the inability of the model to capture the dynamics of GRDP changes. This may result in biased and less valid coefficient estimates. This study aims to analyze the effects of Domestic Investment, Human Development Index (HDI), Labor Force Participation Rate (LFPR), Local Own-Source Revenue, and Capital Expenditure on the GRDP of regencies/municipalities in Jambi Province during the 2021–2024 period using the Geographically and Temporally Weighted Regression (GTWR) method. The analysis is carried out through testing spatial and temporal effects, determining the weighting function, estimating parameters, and evaluating model goodness-of-fit using the AIC and R² values. The results show that the GTWR model yields an AIC value of 90.93 and an R² value of 0.526.

Abstract

Ethnomathematics is a field of study that connects mathematical concepts with cultural practices that develop within community life. This study aims to explore the mathematical concepts embedded in post-harvest tobacco activities of the Pandalungan community in Sumber Kalong Village and to develop an ethnomathematics-based Student Worksheet on the topic of direct proportion. This research employed a qualitative method with an ethnographic approach. The research subjects consisted of five tobacco farmers involved in the post-harvest tobacco processing activities and students of MTS Nurul Huda, most of whom come from tobacco-farming families. Data were collected through field observations and in-depth interviews with the farmers. The results of the study show that post-harvest tobacco activities in the Pandalungan community contain various mathematical concepts, particularly in activities related to counting, measuring, and designing. The mathematical concepts identified include direct and inverse proportion, measurement of length and distance, and numerical operations in calculating the fermentation and drying time of tobacco. The concept of direct proportion appears in determining the number of tobacco leaves in certain weight units and in arranging the drying patterns of tobacco leaves. Based on these findings, ethnomathematics-based teaching materials in the form of Student Worksheets (LKS) were developed to assist seventh-grade junior secondary school students (SMP/MTs) in understanding proportional concepts contextually through local cultural activities of the Pandalungan community.

Abstract

This study aims to develop learning media in the form of mathematical playing cards on the material of distance and volume units and to determine the level of feasibility and practicality of the developed media. This study uses the research-and-development (R&D) method with the ADDIE development model, which includes the stages of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. However, the scope of the study is limited to the formative evaluation stage, namely the results of expert validation and teacher responses, without continuing with experimental effectiveness testing. The research subjects included media experts, material experts, and eighth-grade mathematics teachers of SMP Negeri 3 Ambulu. Data collection techniques were carried out through observation, interviews, and validation questionnaires. The data obtained were analyzed descriptively and quantitatively using a feasibility percentage. The results showed that the mathematical playing card media obtained an average value of 88% from media expert validation with a very feasible category. Material expert validation showed an average value of 85% with a feasible to very feasible category, which indicates that the material and questions presented were in accordance with the basic competencies and learning objectives. In addition, teacher responses to the use of the media showed an average value of 90% with a very practical category. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the developed mathematical playing cards media meets the criteria of validity and practicality, so it is suitable for use as a learning medium for the material of distance and volume units for class VIII students of SMP Negeri 3 Ambulu. This media is expected to be an innovative alternative in mathematics learning and can be further developed through further research to test its effectiveness in improving student learning outcomes.
