Abstract

Kata kunci: literasi keluarga, narasi, film, Monako, komedi, harapan, Fromm Pinning hopes on gen-z through Nicolas Cuche's Pourris Gâtés comedy film: Narrative pedagogy AbstractFilms, like novels, plays, poems, music, paintings, and sculptures, are effective mediums for both education and entertainment. This research aims to interpret Nicolas Cuche's family comedy Pourris Gâtés (2021) using Henry Giroux's critical pedagogical thinking paradigm and Erich Fromm's social psychology. The analytical techniques used in qualitative research are reflective and interpretive. To obtain the message and meaning, visual and oral data in the form of images, conversations, and writings in the film Pourris Gâtés (2021), produced by Borsalino Productionspartners and directed by Nicolas Cuche, are thematically identified. The findings indicated that Francis Bartek, a successful businessman in construction and a wealthy single father, experienced family conflict as he attempted to teach his children—Stella  Bartek, Philippe Bartek, and Alexandre Bartek—to be accountable and self-sufficient by means of employment. Francis Bartek hopes her children understand financial concepts like saving, budgeting, investing, managing finances, and making sound decisions. Stella, Philippe, and Alexandre Bartek struggle to survive by working or starting a business from scratch, and financial literacy concepts and skills are presented through hilarious and familiar scenes and dialogues. The hope that was accompanied by Francis Bartek's active actions towards his children gave rise to conviction, fortitude, and awakening in interpreting their own lives. By expecting someone to be persistent, able to work hard, and take responsibility with full awareness. Thus, the pedagogical narrative of Pourris Gâtés (Cuche, 2021) shows that hope is a psychic aspect of the human being to continue to grow and exist. Keywords: finance literacy, narrative pedagogy, film, Monaco, comedy, hope, Fromm

Abstract

In pronunciation classes, most teachers over-emphasize the accuracy part and ignore the fluency aspects (Elliot, 1995; Yoshida, 2016). To enhance both accuracy and fluency for Chinese students’ pronunciation in Bahasa Indonesia (BI), this study investigates the effects of combining instruction and immersion. This was classroom action research conducted for one semester at Qujing Normal University (QJNU), Yunnan Sheng, China. Audiolingual Method (ALM) with drilling technique was the instruction procedure while the outdoor project was the technique in the immersion. The research subjects were nine first-semester students in the Indonesian Language Department of QJNU. Their score improvements from the pre- to post-assessments indicate that combining these two methods is effective in enhancing students’ pronunciation in BI. The instruction conducted through explicit phonetic teaching and drilling is appropriate for habituating them with accurate pronunciation. Meanwhile, the fun and enjoyable immersion in contextual settings boosts their fluency and gives them opportunities to explore and practice using the words they have learned in real contexts. Along with pronunciation improvement, enhancement in students’ learning attitude and engagement in the learning activities are the other benefits that may contribute to their success in gaining full fluency in the second language. Keywords: drilling, immersion, pronunciation, Chinese students, BIPA

Abstract

Beauty products advertisements concern the scholars because they use the term women empowerment only to increase their profit without caring what happen to women struggle to defend their own rights in society. The third-wave feminism which more closely to define the beauty in diversity make scholars worried that this will misinterpret to prioritize male gaze rather than women empowerment. For this reason, this research aims to investigate the stereotype of women and how women empowerment were presented in L’Oreal Paris lipstick products advertised instagram. This research applies socio-pragmatic approach to semiotics because this study use social semiotics from Kress and van Leeuwen and pragmatism perspective from Peirce. The data of this research were collected from @lorealparis instagram posts which were related only on lipstick products. The data chosen purposively were collected and analyzed using four steps from Bezemer and Jewitt: collecting and logging, viewing, sampling, transcribing and analyzing. The result of this study shows that icon, index and symbol in the data represent women stereotypically as professional women, sexually powerful, and object of beauty which makes them looks equal and confidence regardless of their skin color and body size. This research also shows that @lorealparis lipstick product advertisement has empowered women to use their attractiveness as the power to conquer obstacles and injustice. Keywords:  semiotic, advertisement poster, L'Oreal Paris lipstick products, women empowerment Studi semiotik tentang iklan poster produk lipstik L'Oreal Paris AbstrakIklan produk kecantikan menjadi perhatian para sarjana karena mereka menggunakan istilah pemberdayaan wanita hanya untuk meningkatkan keuntungan mereka tanpa peduli apa yang terjadi pada perjuangan wanita dalam membela hak-hak mereka dalam masyarakat.

Abstract

Abstract

Translating interjections is notoriously challenging. Aside from their ambiguous and context-dependent meanings, they also express emotions through broadly suggestive sensations, attitudes, and states of mind. This study attempts to uncover emotional meanings embedded in cognitive interjections, the conversion strategies of cognitive interjections, and how the conversion strategies affect correspondence and equivalence. The data were interjective expressions in the classic English literature entitled "Charlotte's Web" and its Indonesian translation "Laba-Laba and Jaring Kesayangannya", which were scrutinized using content-based mixed methods. The emotional meanings were explored using Jovanović’s (2004) theory. The conversion was identified by cultivating Cuenca (2006)'s and Baker (1992)’s proposals. Meanwhile, the implication of the conversions was observed by considering formal correspondence and meaning equivalence. The results suggest that: first, different types of emotional meaning are found in both ST and TT, i.e. anger, disagreement, enquiry, ensurement, hesitation, irritation, pleasure, realization, relief, soothe, and triumph. Second, four conversion strategies are deployed by the translator from English to Indonesian version, i.e. (1) conversion using a similar form and meaning; (2) conversion using a similar form, meaning, and literal translation (triplets) and (3) the conversion through deletion, with the first one as the most often used. Third, while the first two conversions were applicable for producing equivalent expressions, whereas the translator, on the whole, maintains a formal correspondence that equalizes the meaning, the last results in some degree of emotional meaning deviations. This study has demonstrated how inappropriate strategies of rendering interjections may cause distortion of the author’s original idea and ruin or reduce the emotional expressiveness in the text. Keywords: conversion, cognitive interjections, literary translation, translation equivalence

Abstract

Novice teachers often encountered some challenges in their professional work that might influence their emotions.  It is quite reasonable that some EFL novice teachers may still struggle to manage their negative emotions to cope with classroom problems. Some emotions could be freely expressed positively, whereas other emotions were left unexpressed for some reasons. This study aimed to answer two research questions, namely: (1) what kinds of emotions do novice teachers frequently experience in teaching? (2) How do novice EFL teachers cope with their emotions in professional life? This study employed a qualitative method and carried out semi-structured interviews to gain in-depth data from the participants' perspectives in dealing with their emotions. The instruments employed were interview-guidelines questions and open-ended questions. The result of the present study revealed that, first, all novice teachers frequently experienced two main challenges in teaching, namely students’ misbehaviours and disrespectful behaviours. These challenges could influence teachers' emotions of anger, being overwhelmed, and worries. Second, the findings demonstrated that teachers employed three strategies, namely self-regulation, self-talk, and a problem-focused strategy to manage and handle their emotions in teaching. In addition, the present study suggested beneficial implications, limitations, and directions for further research. Keywords: Emotions, EFL Novice Teachers, and Strategies

Abstract

Data diklasifikasikan berdasarkan Top-Down dan Bottom-Up guna melihat bentuk dan pola penggunaan bahasa keduanya. Kata Kunci: lanskap linguistik, Tempat Pemakaman Umum, Kota Malang, teks ruang publik Message and Identity Symbols Behind Death:Linguistic Landscape in Public Areas of Public Cemetery in Malang City AbstractThe language used in the name of PC is closely related to the characteristics of religion, culture, social systems, history, locality, and intervention of the local government. This research aims to investigate the presence of information and symbolic functions of the naming system of PC in Malang City. The data were collected from 102 name board texts in 42 PCs spread across five districts in Malang City, namely Klojen, Lowokwaru, Blimbing, Sukun, and Kedung Kandang, using documentation techniques (photos). The data was classified based on Top-Down and Bottom-Up to see the form and pattern of language usage. Data analysis used the linguistic landscape theory proposed by Landry and Bourhis (1997). The results showed that the Bottom-Up pattern dominated the appearances. Regarding language use, the analysis results showed that there were three forms that appeared, namely monolingual, bilingual, and multilingual, with nine language use patterns. Indonesian, Javanese, and Arabic were involved in all patterns. This indicates that PC in Malang City is synonymous with language competence symbols, Muslim community domination, and the presence of Javanese symbols. These texts also convey information messages regarding the naming system of burial sites, orders/prohibitions, advice, and direction/location guidance. Symbols embodied in language use are as follows: Indonesian language as a symbol of language competence and language policy; Javanese language indicates the symbol of group vitality and sacredness; Arabic language as a symbol of Islamic religious entity; English language as a symbol of the religious tourism industry; the Japanese language builds the symbol of the past in dark tourism. Keywords: linguistic landscape, Public Cemetery, Malang City, public space texts.

Abstract

There is a growing body of literature examining the significance of authentic assessment in enhancing teachers’ assessment literacy. This study set out to investigate pre-service English teachers’ perception of authentic assessment in their speaking class. This sequential explanatory study employed a set of questionnaires and semi-structured interviews in the data collection. A total of 46 pre-service English teachers in their final year participated in this study. They completed a web-based survey, and four of them who used authentic assessment in their speaking class were selected for an interview. The quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive analysis while the qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings showed that 71.74% of respondents were aware of what authentic evaluation entails as learned from various sources, primarily lecturers and tutors. More than 25% of respondents could not comprehend an authentic assessment, and fewer than a fifth (19.57%) of those surveyed had never taken a course on authentic assessment. The results from the survey and interview also showed that lack of time or the lengthy implementation time of authentic assessment, as well as the class size were reported to be the main challenges of the students in applying authentic assessment. Oral interviews, picture-cued descriptions or stories, information gaps, story/text retelling, role plays/simulations, oral reports, and debates were examples of the authentic assessment tools they normally used. This study implied the need for more authentic assessment trainings and or sessions for these pre-service English teachers in the future. Keywords: perception, authentic assessment, speaking
