Abstract

Meeting the needs of clean water services in the community requires innovation with appropriate technology by developing groundwater or well water treatment (filtering) which has a high turbidity level so that clean water is obtained with quality that meets health requirements The water processing (filtering) is the Water Well Submerged Filter by using filter media, namely sand, gravel, activated carbon, and fibers. The purpose of this study was to determine the ability of the immersed water filter to reduce water turbidity, Fe, Mn content and total coliform. This type of research is experimental with the design of One Group Pretest-Posttest Design. The results showed that the immersed water filter was effective in reducing turbidity and Fe content in the water, while the immersion filter's ability to reduce the Mn content and total coliform was not effective. It was concluded that the Up Flow Sand Filter in which A filter with sea sand media, B filter with land sand medium and C filter with sea sand media effectively reduced the turbidity and manganese levels, while the total coliform for and E. coli still exceeded the required quality standards. Further research needs to be done on the effect of varying media thickness and finer diameter in order to reduce colform and E. coli effectively

Abstract

Leptospira was classified into three groups, namely pathogenic, intermediate, and saprophytic. Pathogenic Leptospira caused human and animal Leptospirosis, Leptospira intermediate recently found in human but not reproduce disease, meanwhile Leptopsira from the saprophytic group is an environmental species and considered not to caused disease. This study aims to do a systematic review of the diversity of Leptospira species from environmental samples in Asia. Based on this review, Leptospira from all groups were identified from environmental samples in Asia. Dominant pathogenic Leptopsira is L. kmetyi, Leptospira intermediate is L. wolffii Anda the dominant Leptospira from saprophytic group is L. meyeri. For further Leptospira, a detection study is recommended to classify Leptospira base on four subclades, namely P1, P2, S1 and S2. Knowing the classification of Leptospira from environmental samples will be able to provide information about where and how the transmission of Leptospirosis occurs.

Abstract

The number of deaths due to diarrhea caused by climate change is approximately 0.2%, and 85% of deaths among them are children. This research purposed to determine the relationship of climate with the incidence of diarrhea cases based on topography areas in two districts of West Sumatra from 2010-2014. This research used the ecological study design based on the time. Population and sample in this research was the incidence of diarrhea monthly data were recorded at the District Health Department for the years 2010-2014 (total sampling). Data sources using secondary data from District Health Department and Meteorological and Geophysics Station. The result showed that the average incidence rate of diarrhea during 2010-2014 in Pesisir Selatan and Agam District is 2,53/1000 population and 2.30/1000 population, temperature 27,73ºC and 22,18ºC, rainfall 233.71 mm and 234.21 mm, humidity 74.17% and 86,14%, and wind velocity 3.64 knots and 0,99 knots. Results of climate analysis and the incidence of diarrhea showed an insignificant relationship, in Pesisir Selatan and Agam District, so preventive activities such as improving community-based total sanitation (STBM) were still the right efforts to be carried out by the Pesisir Selatan District and Agam District Health Offices.

Abstract

The action of heavy metals in inhibiting enzymes occurs due to interactions between proteins or enzymes that bind to sulfide groups such as disulfide (-S-S) and sulfhydryl (-SH) in enzymes. The sulfide group is able to bind heavy metals that enter the body and are bound in the blood, because heavy metals have a high affinity for sulfide groups. The bond becomes strong and stable, resulting in increased levels of chromium, cadmium and nickel in the body. This Literature Review study aims to determine the accumulation and dangers caused by exposure to heavy metals chromium (Cr), cadmium (Cd) and Nickel (Ni) in the human body. The literature review research method uses existing research journals in the Google Scholar and PubMed databases with PRISMA Flow guidelines, obtained 10 reference journals for information. The results of the review show that the dangers of exposure to heavy metals chromium (Cr), cadmium (Cd) and nickel (Ni) in the human body can cause toxic effects to the body including kidney failure, lung function, respiratory disorders, skin and cancer.

Abstract

Cassava naturally contains cyanogenic glycosides, which have the potential to become hydrogen cyanide (HCN) toxic. Cassava can be safer to be consumed if it is conducted pre-processing and processing. One of example of pre-processing is soaking. The objective of this research was to comprehend the effect of soaking water type in cassava on the hydrogen cyanide (HCN) reduction level. This research was a pre-experimental research with After Only Design. The objects of research was cassavas with a total of 18 samples. The types of soaking water was in the form of 10% of table salt solution concentration, 10% calcium hydroxide solution concentration, and PDAM water (control) with an initial temperature of 55ºC. The soaking time was conducted for 120 minutes. The method of hydrogen cyanide examination level using a titrimetric method. The data that had obtained was then analyzed using an Anova test. The result of while cassavas’ HCN level after soaking with table salt solution was 63 mg/kg, calcium hydroxide solution was 70 mg/kg, and PDAM water was 175 mg/kg. The Anova test indicated that there was a difference in hydrogen cyanide level value from three types of soaking water in cassava (p < 0.05). The conclusion of this research is that there is an effect of soaking water type on hydrogen cyanide (HCN) level value which is contained in cassava
