Abstract

One comprehensive commentary on religious moderation is Tafsīr Fī Ẓilāl al-Qurʾān by Sayyid Quṭb. However, this interpretation often faces negative stigma from certain groups who perceive it as radical and extreme. Previous studies have examined Sayyid Quṭb's ideas within the context of Islamic politics and the Islamist movement, but research that situates his thoughts within the framework of maqāṣid al-sharīʿah remains limited. In this regard, the maqāṣid asy-syarī’ah approach developed by al-Shāṭibī offers a more inclusive perspective for understanding the concept of moderation in the Qur'an and its application in contemporary life. This research employs a maqāṣid al-sharīʿah approach using qualitative methods. The analysis technique utilized refers to the theory of Miles and Huberman. The results of this research indicate that wasāṭiyyah plays a crucial role in preventing extreme attitudes, both in the form of extremism and liberalism, which can disrupt individual and social balance. Maqāṣid asy-syarī'ah emerged as a new methodology that has produced the Fiqh Ijtihādī and Fiqh Maqāṣidī approaches. Through this concept, Asy-Syāṭibī emphasized that the primary aim of Islamic law is to create benefits and promote good values in every implementation. Wasāṭiyyah, from the maqāṣid perspective, provides an adaptive framework for Muslims, ensuring that Islamic law remains relevant to various social, economic, and political situations. With the guidance of maqāṣid, moderation in Islam becomes the foundation for living harmoniously in a pluralistic society, where justice, tolerance, and benefit are the main priorities

Abstract

Wetu Telu is a belief system and religious practice still observed by some Sasak Muslims in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara. The purpose of this study is to identify the forms of practice and understanding related to the acceptance of mah}abbah among Wetu Telu adherents and to explore the arguments supporting this acceptance. The research questions addressed in this study include: What is the general meaning of mah}abbah in the Qur'an? How do Wetu Telu Muslims in Bayan Village celebrate the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad (Prophet's Birthday)? What are the patterns of acceptance and the goals of Wetu Telu adherents in interpreting mah}abbah based on Surah Ali 'Imran, verse 31? This study employs a qualitative descriptive method. The qualitative approach involves gathering information in a natural setting using scientific methods. Meanwhile, the descriptive method seeks to describe a specific object or historical event, followed by an effort to draw general conclusions based on historical facts-one of which is conducted through interviews. The findings of this study indicate that the reception of mah}abbah among Wetu Telu adherents, as reflected in Surah Ali 'Imran verse 31, manifests in a different form of love compared to mainstream Muslims in its application. Wetu Telu adherents integrate local cultural traditions and perform rituals in their religious activities. In applying the theoretical framework of this study, the encoding process refers to Sunan Prapen, who introduced the Qur'an to Wetu Telu followers through Sufi mystical teachings. As a result, cultural syncretism remains prevalent among its adherents today. Meanwhile, the decoding or reception pattern of mah}abbah varies: a small portion of adherents accept the meaning of the Qur'anic text in its entirety, known as hegemonic dominance, while the majority contextualise the text, a process referred to as negotiation

Abstract

Imam Al-Mawardi, one of the most influential political thinkers in the history of Islamic civilization, provides a robust normative framework through the concept of al-imamah in his seminal work, Al-Ahkam al-Sulthaniyyah. Al-Mawardi emphasizes that power is not merely a tool for domination but a divine trust (amanah ilahiyah) that must be exercised to uphold justice, safeguard the public interest (maslahah), and protect the rights of the people. This study aims to analyze Al-Mawardi's concept of power and examine its relevance within the context of post-reform Indonesian democracy. The research employs a qualitative approach based on a literature review, utilizing a descriptive-comparative analysis technique to compare the normative framework of classical Islam with the principles of modern democracy. The findings indicate a convergence between the two systems regarding the legitimacy of power, public participation, and leadership accountability. Al-Mawardi, through the institution of ahl al-halli wa al-‘aqdi, provides a theoretical foundation for community representation in the leadership selection process, which functionally resembles elections in a democratic system. However, there are also epistemic tensions between the two, particularly concerning the source of sovereignty (God vs. the people) and the legal basis (Sharia vs. positive law). These findings reinforce the argument that classical Islamic political thought, when interpreted contextually rather than formalistically, can serve as a source of values to enhance the quality of substantive democracy in Indonesia

Abstract

This study examines the integration of Sharia and Haqiqat within the Tarekat Tijaniyyah, a Sufi order founded by Shaykh Ahmad al-Tijani in the 18th century in Morocco. This order emphasizes the importance of harmony between the practice of Sharia (Islamic rituals and laws) and the understanding of Haqiqat (profound spiritual knowledge). The concept of Mīzān al-Sharʿ (Shari'a Scale) was introduced by Shaykh al-Tijani to ensure that every teaching of the order aligns with Islamic law. This study also discusses the global and local acceptance of the Tarekat Tijaniyyah, particularly in Indonesia, by highlighting the religious moderation present in Indonesian society. The Tarekat Tijaniyyah is well-received in Indonesia due to its non-exclusive teachings and its relevance to existing Sufi spiritual traditions. Additionally, Mīzān al-Sharʿ provides a sense of security for the followers of the order by ensuring that the teachings they receive do not conflict with the fundamental principles of Sharia, thereby strengthening their commitment to living a spiritual life that balances worldly concerns with the hereafter. Through an approach that harmonizes Sharia and reality, the Tijaniyyah Order remains relevant amidst contemporary social and religious dynamics, both globally and locally

Abstract

This study examines how and why Salafi groups, recognized for their puritanical and conservative ideologies, come to accept the concept of religious moderation. The objective of this research is to identify the factors that motivate Salafi groups to embrace religious moderation and to explore its impact on their religious identity and models of citizenship. Employing a qualitative-interpretative approach, this study utilizes data gathered from secondary sources, including books, articles, research reports, and social media The contribution of this study lies in providing a deeper understanding of how conservative religious groups can evolve and embrace more moderate discourse. This is particularly important in the current national context, as it fosters harmony and promotes religious tolerance. The findings indicate that Salafi groups accept religious moderation for various reasons, including social and political pressures, a desire for broader societal acceptance, and an evolving interpretation of their faith. However, this process is often challenging and frequently involves internal conflicts and struggles with identity. Salafi groups affirm their position as citizens by accommodating state policies, including the national religious moderation program. Their adaptation to the secular state system is crucial for their survival and influence within society.

Abstract

This article aims to examine the implementation of raḥmatan li al-‘ālamīn values through Maqāṣid-Based Interpretation (Tafsīr maqāṣidī) in the context of social justice, based on QS. Al-Anbiyā’ verse 107. The study employs a qualitative method with a literature review approach and textual analysis of classical and contemporary exegesis literature. The findings reveal that the value of raḥmatan li al-‘ālamīn is not only theological but also serves as a practical guide for fostering a just, harmonious, and prosperous society. Tafsīr maqāṣidī, which emphasizes the objectives of Islamic law (maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah) such as the protection of religion, life, intellect, lineage, and wealth, provides a comprehensive framework for translating Islamic values into social policies relevant to modern challenges. The study also identifies key challenges in implementing these values, including social, economic, political, and cultural barriers, while offering practical opportunities and strategies to overcome them. In conclusion, raḥmatan li al-‘ālamīn values, through Tafsīr maqāṣidī, can be effectively integrated into social policies to address various global challenges, offering inclusive and equitable solutions. This study is expected to serve as a reference for academics, policymakers, and practitioners in promoting Islamic values as a mercy for all creation

Abstract

Qiṣāṣ is a legal principle that existed in pre-Islamic religions, and in Surah Al-Maidah (5:32-33), the law of qiṣāṣ intersects with Biblical sources. However, the intertextual readings by mufasirun (Qur'anic commentators) are often disproportionate. Additionally, the concept of Orientalist intertextual analysis has created a disconnect with the field of ‘ulūm al-Qur'ān (sciences of the Qur'an), which has implications for the interpretation of these verses. This article aims to explore the Qur'ān's stance on the Biblical tradition in the context of qiṣāṣ through intertextual analysis, applying the principles of ‘ulūm al-Qur'ān. As part of a literature review, the primary source, Surah Al-Maidah (5:32-33), will be examined alongside secondary sources, including scholarly and Orientalist interpretations, to enhance the analysis. This study employs the qualitative data analysis method developed by Miles and Huberman, which involves data condensation, data presentation, and conclusion/verification. This article demonstrates that the Qur'ān engages with the Biblical tradition in two significant ways: 1) It affirms qiṣāṣ as a law that is already present in Abrahamic religious texts, specifically in Leviticus and the Mishnah Sanhedrin. This affirmation highlights the Qur'ān's intertextual connection with the broader Biblical tradition; 2) The Qur'ān revises the earlier concept of qiṣāṣ in the context of a critique directed at the ahl al-Kitāb of Medina and a condemnation of the behaviors characteristic of the Jahiliyya Arabs. Furthermore, Qur'an 5:32 can be interpreted as a foundational principle for the application of diyat in Islamic law, distinguishing it from previous qiṣāṣ laws

Abstract

This study examines the story of Maryam in the Qur'an as a model of resilience in addressing postpartum depression. The purpose of this research is to identify aspects of mental resilience, utilizing Grotberg's resilience theory, that can be applied to postpartum mothers. The study employs a thematic interpretation method combined with a literature review approach. Primary data sources were gathered from Qur'anic verses, while secondary sources included tafsir (Qur'anic exegesis) books, scientific journals, and articles related to mental health. The results of the study indicate that Maryam overcame physical, emotional, and social challenges with extraordinary resilience through spiritual support (I Have), strength of faith and optimism (I Am), and adaptability and problem-solving skills (I Can). The implementation of these values includes spiritual practices such as prayer, remembrance of Allah, and reading the Qur'an, as well as the importance of social support from family and the community. This study contributes new insights to the interdisciplinary fields of Islamic spirituality and psychology and offers practical guidance for postpartum mothers in managing their emotions. This approach provides a more holistic perspective on supporting maternal mental well-being by integrating spiritual and psychological aspects for postpartum recovery.

Abstract

The diversity of interpretations of the Holy Qur’an is inevitable, largely due to methodological differences, specifically the riwāyah method and ijtihad. In the debate over whether the recitation of the basmalah is part of al-Fatihah, some commentators consistently employ the riwāyah method. However, al-Ṭabārī approached the status of the basmalah recitation in al-Fatihah solely through ijtihad. Consequently, the author examines this issue using a qualitative approach grounded in library research. The findings indicate that al-Ṭabārī explicitly opposes the inclusion of the basmalah as part of al-Fatihah. He argues that if the basmalah were indeed a verse of surat al-Fatihah, it would result in the phrase in one Surāh without any separation, and he does not cite any riwāyah sources to support his argument. Al-Ṭabārī's perspective presents a paradox based on two aspects. First, his reliance on pure rationality contradicts the concept of the Holy Qur’an's composition, which is tawqīfī, meaning that al-Ṭabārī should depend on information from the Prophet for legitimization. Second, his rational approach in rejecting the basmalah's status as a verse of al-Fatihah contradicts al-Ṭabārī’s methodological commitment to interpreting the Holy Qur’an based on information from the Prophet and the interpretations of the salaf generation

Abstract

The diversity of Qur'ānic interpretations often leads to disputes among Muslims. Therefore, critical evaluation and tolerance are essential to avoid exclusive truth claims and subjective biases, as well as to promote a moderate understanding of the Qur'an. The purpose of this study is to examine the ontological, epistemological, and axiological aspects of mazahib al-Tafsir. It is hoped that common ground and consensus can be established in understanding the teachings of the Qur'an, thereby strengthening ukhuwah Islamiyah and preventing divisions among Muslims. This research employs a descriptive-analytical method to explore the development of mazahib al-Tafsir from classical to contemporary times. Data were collected through a literature review of Tafsir texts and related scholarly works. The findings indicate that, ontologically, mazahib al-Tafsir are schools of Qur'anic interpretation that emerge from the differing backgrounds, understandings, and methodologies of mufassirs. Epistemologically, the evolution of mazahib al-Tafsir is influenced by both internal factors (such as language, politics, and theology) and external factors (including other civilizations and scientific advancements). This has led to the emergence of various styles of tafsir (bil Ma'tsur, bir Ra'yi, and scientific) as efforts to understand and apply the Qur'an in a dynamic context. The axiology of mazahib al-Tafsir aims to avoid the sacralization of religious thought, to comprehend the evolution of Qur'anic interpretation, and to appreciate the plurality of interpretations. Reason: Improved clarity, vocabulary, and technical accuracy while maintaining the original meaning
