Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the effect of low-impact aerobic exercise on increasing physical fitness for the elderly. This one group of pretest-posttest quasi-experimental research recruited elderly subjects from Sumber Waras Elderly Association in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Twenty-four elderly subjects aged 60-70 years old participated in the 16 sessions of aerobic exercise intervention. All subjects completed pre-and post-intervention physical fitness tests comprising the aerobic/cardiovascular (CV) endurance (2 minutes step test), upper body strength (arm curl test), lower body strength (chair stand test), upper body flexibility (back scratch test), core and lower body flexibility (sit and reach test) and balance (8 foot up and go test). Changes in physical fitness (post- versus pre-intervention) of the subjects were analyzed using paired T-test. The normality and homogeneity tests were performed using the Kolmogorov Smirnov and Levene’s tests, respectively. Statistical significance was set to p 0.05. This study showed that all physical fitness components, including aerobic endurance, upper and lower body strength, upper and lower body flexibility, and balance, were increased significantly in the subjects (p 0.05). The results suggest that low-impact aerobic exercise positively affects physical fitness improvement in the elderly.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the correlation between nutritional adequacy, Fe content, body fat percentage, and muscle mass percentage with physical fitness in football athletes. Adequacy of nutrients (energy, protein, fat, protein and Fe) was obtained with a 2×24 hour recall. The Fe content value of Fe was measured using the cyanmethemoglobin method and sTfR was measured using the ELWASA method. The percentage of fat and muscle was obtained by using a Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis tool. Physical fitness was measured using the ACSPFT (Asian Committee on Standardization of Physical Fitness Test) test which includes long jumps, pull-ups, sit-ups, sprints or sprints, shuttle run tests, sit and reach and long runs. The bivariate statwastical test used was the Pearson and Rank-Spearman correlation test, while the multivariate test used the Linear Regression test. There was a correlation between carbohydrate adequacy and physical fitness (p = 0.008). Physical fitness related to carbohydrate adequacy was agility and hand muscle strength (shuttle run and pull-up). There was no correlation between adequacy of energy, protein, fat, Fe Content, fat percentage, muscle percentage and physical fitness of athletes. The results of multivariate analysis showed that the most influential on physical fitness was fat adequacy (Rsquwere=14,6%).

Abstract

Apnea ability is the main determining factor of freediving performance. Apnea relates to physiological factors that might be experienced by a free diver hence its ability is highly likely to correlate with various factors of human physiology. One of the suspected factors that affect apnea duration is body fat level. The fact that fat is distributed in almost all parts of the body, including respiratory organs and tracts, arises the suspicion of a possible correlation between fat accumulation and apnea ability. This research studies the correlation between body fat level and apnea duration. 30 males, aged 18-22 were the research participant. Body fat levels were measured using Bioelectrical Impedance Analyzer, while apnea duration was measured by the length of which the participants hold their breath while sitting silently in the pool. The obtained data were then analyzed using a series of tests: normality, correlation, and linear regression tests. Pearson Correlation test shows negative result (p0,05) with the value of correlation coefficient -0.611 which means negative correlation with medium strength. The result of the linear regression test also shows a similar value of 0.611. Meanwhile, the value of the determinant coefficient (R square) is 0.374 (37.4%). Based on the value obtained, it can be inferred that body fat levels have 37.4% influence on the duration of apnea, while the other 62.2% are influenced by a variety of other factors
