Abstract

Street corridors in a historical area are vital in forming an element of the city's image. Dr Radjiman's corridor in Surakarta is part of a historical area containing residents' daily activities. Physically, humans can visually perceive colour, ornament and material elements as a building's facade on two sides of the corridor. This study aims to trace the visual elements in the corridor, which can be seen from the physical aspect. The method used in the research is mixed-methods based, and the respondent data sample obtained is probability sampling. This research can provide a physical description of what is found around the corridor. This research found that visually, the colour, material and ornamental aspects create a diverse mix and match the dominance of white, fabricated materials and cultural acculturation ornaments such as Dutch, Chinese Peranakan and Javanese heritage ornaments. The results of this research can become scientific findings to support efforts to revitalize street corridors in Surakarta.

Abstract

Environmental characteristics, visitor activities, and user impressions (sense of place) of Gasibu Park determine users' interest and the sustainability of Gasibu Park as a public space. This research aims to reveal user perceptions of the environmental characteristics, activities, and users’ sense of place, as well as the relationship between the three. This research used a mixed-method approach. First, text data from reviews on Google Maps was collected and analysed to explore user perceptions. Second, data was collected through an online questionnaire with closed-ended questions. The collected data was analysed using factor analysis to obtain dimensions of perception to the environmental characteristics, activity, and sense of place. From the multivariate regression analysis, it was revealed that the dimensions of environmental quality, location and accessibility, and management influenced the dimensions of suitability for the place, while the dimensions of management, public facilities, photography, and recreational tourism influenced the dimensions of dedication to place.

Abstract

The uneven distribution of planning and provision of adequate pedestrian infrastructure stems from its focus on specific roads in certain areas. This research was conducted around Jalan W. R. Supratman, Bandung City, an urban environment where people live, with various facilities. We evaluate the pedestrian infrastructure using the criteria and aspects of PEQI, combining them with the applicable regulatory standards in Indonesia. PEQI serves as a quantitative observation tool that evaluates the quality and safety of the physical environment for pedestrians, taking into account the needs of the environment, segments, and intersections. The results of the evaluation show that the condition of pedestrian infrastructure in the area is inadequate. Improvements are needed to increase pedestrian interest in this area. The results of the evaluation can provide a basis for stakeholders to take planning steps to provide adequate pedestrian infrastructure in the city of Bandung.

Abstract

The Malang Creative Center (MCC) construction is a step taken by the Malang City government to support the flow of modernization and as a forum for Malang residents to develop their creativity. The MCC display concept is planned by combining the shape of the temple and the unique cultural background of Malangan. However, during the development process, many changes were different from the initial concept. All these things make this building interesting to study critically. Therefore, this study aims to critically identify these changes in the idea as well as rectify the perceptions that have developed. Descriptive analysis was carried out through direct observation of objects by describing real conditions and explanatory verification of the results of these observations with visitors' views via a questionnaire. The analysis results show that the public's perception of the visual MCC has a good level of compatibility with the concept and function of the building, although some aspects still require attention regarding the visitor’s safety and comfort.

Abstract

Providing access to safe and inclusive public spaces is the target of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). There are challenges to achieving this goal because of the high density in many areas in Indonesia, which occurs in the Pasar Lama area of Tangerang, causing limited public open space. Nevertheless, residents of the Pasar Lama area still actively use the available spaces between buildings, which may have different standards from the literature, as places for social activities. Thus, this study aims to investigate the factors contributing to the livability of public spaces in the Pasar Lama area. This study uses a qualitative method with purposive random sampling, selecting 20 informants from 7 identified public spaces to be interviewed. Primary data includes interviews, observations, mapping, and secondary data from various literature on standards of livable public spaces. The results of this study conclude that sociability and place attachment factors play an important role in making these spaces livable. The high level of social interaction and the existence of supporting facilities at every point in the public space reflect a high level of sociability and encourage public space to continue to be used actively. The strong place attachment felt by residents also creates a sense of responsibility towards the environment where they live.

Abstract

Cases of violence against women, especially in the domestic sector or home, have been increasing every year in Indonesia. This research aims to develop a hypothesis model of design criteria with a feminist approach for women victims of violence. Data collection method was conducted by reviewing relevant archival sources, and data analysis method was carried out using the summative content analysis method. The results show a model hypothesis of the design criteria combining three approaches: feminism, therapeutic architecture, and crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED), totaling 29 design criteria. This research fills the knowledge gap by providing focused design criteria addressing the needs of women victims of violence, which can be used as a basis for designing. The practical implications include improved design strategies that promote a healing environment, empowerment, and safe of security for women victims of violence.

Abstract

The continued existence of colonial buildings in Indonesia represents a process of design adaptation. Colonial buildings have experienced numerous functional changes, necessitating new design modifications within existing structures, all while preserving their cultural heritage. This necessitates a transformational and innovative design process. This study aims to identify the design innovations of neoclassical-style colonial buildings in Wastukencana, Bandung, from their establishment until they transitioned into a commercial function. We used an exploratory description of existing residential buildings in the Netherlands and Wastukencana in 1819, before they transitioned into commercial functions. For a period of more than 100 years, the residential building has been able to survive as a comfortable place to live without change. The transformation of the building into a commercial facility necessitates new adjustments while maintaining the integrity of the existing structure. The Netherlands carried out design innovations at the beginning of its establishment, transforming the shape of the roof, the façade, and using materials suitable for the tropical climate. Meanwhile, the main structure transitions from residential to commercial use by incorporating separate building elements, preserving its cultural heritage status.

Abstract

RSIA Melati Husada Malang developed the concept of a boutique hospital by applying Javanese architectural interiors to give a homey, personal, and authentic impression and support the healing environment concept. This aims to reduce anxiety and improve the well-being of postpartum patients. The purpose of this study is to identify the interior elements of Javanese architecture in the postpartum inpatient room that support the formation of a healing environment. The research uses a qualitative descriptive method with data sources from field observations. The criteria for identifying the object of study were developed by integrating literature studies on the interior elements of Javanese architecture and the concept of healing environment. This resulted in the formulation of 6 categories and 14 elements of Javanese architectural interiors, all of which adhere to the healing environment criteria. Furthermore, we use these criteria as a reference for descriptive analysis of the object of study. The results of this study show that the object of the study has applied 13 out of 14 criteria for Javanese interior design based on the healing environment.

Abstract

The study aims to rate and categorize the quality of the livable built environment in Kampung Warna-Warni Jodipan, which is a riverside settlement. It will do this by identifying important physical features through visual observation, visual interpretation of ArcGIS, scoring, and weighting. We use visual observation methods and visual interpretation of ARCGis to determine and evaluate physical conditions that impact the quality of the settlement environment. We use the scoring and weighting techniques to assess and classify the quality of the habitable built environment in Kampung Warna-Warni Jodipan. The results of this study show the physical aspects that form the quality of the residential environment affect the quality of the habitable built environment both positively and negatively. Physical aspects that have a good effect are the road surface and roof coverings of buildings; physical aspects that have a moderate effect are the density of buildings and settlement locations; while the physical aspects that adversely affect are the width of the driveway, protective trees, and building layout. The medium quality classification includes Kampung Warna-Warni Jodipan RW 2, RT 6, 7, and 9, with RT 7 having a poor classification value and RT 6 and 9 having a medium one.
