Abstract

The study of Thomas S. Kuhn's thought about the scientific revolution and its relevance to Islamic sciences is important. Although the Kuhn's thoughts of scientific revolution has fundamental and philosophical differences considering the historical aspects and the origin of its emergence which do have different characteristics, these adaptive and accommodative efforts in the history of Islamic scholarship have occurred. This study aims to describe how Thomas S. Kuhn's thought about the scientific revolution, its stages, and its relevance in Islamic science. This study is a literature study, where data is collected by using documentation technique and analyzed through the data reduction, data display, and concluding. The scientific revolution assumes that the development of science is drastic and revolutionary. The shifting paradigm from the old paradigm to the new one is what has led to a science developing radically. The stages include paradigm I, normal science, anomaly, crisis, scientific revolution, paradigm II. In this case the main key to the scientific revolution is methodology. So, in the context of the developing Islamic Sciences, the methodology of how understanding the Islamic teaching must be changed (revolutionized) according to the times, and not changing the Islamic teaching text itself. So that what happens is the dynamic of the Muslims paradigm towards religion which has been continuously carried out throughout the ages.

From this research, the author has discovered that ta’dib is mean instilled adab to human self. Then, leadership is trust from God, which will ask that responsibility. This leadership include two dimension, that is for individu (self) and collective (society).  This leadership is based on justice, wisdom and adab, that justice is realization of adab, in the same manner as refelction of wisdom. Therefore, wisdom (hikmah), courtesy (adab) and justice (‘adl) must be instilled to form leadership.  In the implementation of the ta'dib, there are also several things that must be considered: (1) emphasis on the soul, (2) integration between the knowledge of fardhu ‘ain and fardhu kifayah, and (3) dependence on authority. Beside that, in the implementation of the ta'dib, is use tawhid method.

Abstract

AbstractThe notion that technology is value-free is becoming a prevalent view amongst the technology practitioners, as depicted in the phrase “guns don’t kill people, people do”. This is inseparable from the definition of technology which has been narrowed down to a mere tools/artifacts and the shortcomings inherent in the existing human-technology interaction model. This paper aims to re-discuss to which extent the value-free argument of technology holds true. Based on the worldview analysis, it is evident that technology is in fact value-laden. A more comprehensive human-technology interaction model is additionally proposed to overcome the shortcomings of the previous models. Having proven that technology is in fact value-laden, this paper then examines how the comprehensive teaching of Islam as a worldview can provide as a basis for the discipline of Islamic technology, i.e. a discipline of knowledge which aims to formulate how the worldview of Islam serves as the foundation for the technological development and (contemporary) technology evaluation. Some topics on the worldview of Islam that are relevant to the inventor and user of technology as well as its implementation on the practical level are addressed to show the wide-ranging scope of the discipline of Islamic technology.

Abstract

Abstract This paper tries to explore the concept of purification of the soul (tazkiyat al-nafs) and its relationship to happiness according to Ibn Qayyim al-Jauziyyah. Ibn Qayyim explained that the soul (nafs) is the essence of man with the ability to incline to good or evil. The soul was created with flaws and imperfect, but it will become perfect with the purification (tazkiyatun nafs). This research is a library study and the data collected using documentary techniques. The collected data were analyzed utilizing analytical-descriptive method. This study concludes the following. First, the purification of the soul according to Ibn Qayyim is not only to purify the human soul, but also to purify his faith. Second, Ibn Qayyim's method of purifying the soul is by takhalli (emptying the soul) from all impurities of sin and tahalli (filling the soul) with obedience to Allah in the form of the main practices to achieve soul perfection. Third, happiness according to Ibn Qayyim is the happiness of the spiritual heart (nafs) as well as the happiness of useful knowledge. The highest and greatest happiness is the happiness of the heart in achieving ma'rifatullah. Fourth, the relationship of purification of the soul with happiness according to Ibn Qayyim is like a mirror in which there is a law of causality (cause and effect). The  more the mirror of the heart is cleansed of the rust of sin, the image of His Throne will be clearer and more visible, so that it leads to ma'rifatullah.

This article aims to explain the characteristics of al-Attas' Islamization. Since this idea was proposed for the first time by Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas in 1977 at the World Conference of Muslims in Mecca, it has prompted Muslim scholars’s interesting to make proposals about how Islamization will be aplicated. For example, Ismail Raji al-Faruqi with the institution he leads IIIT, or Maurice Bucaille's approach model which is generally called ayatization. On the many proposals, it is important to explain the characteristics of al-Attas’ Islamization as the originator of this idea. This discussion will be carried out using a content analysis, such a method interpreting al-Attas' works on Islamization.in additional a comparative analysis (comparative method). The results of this study are: First, according to al-Attas, Islamization occurs in the soul. Second, there are two stages of the Islamization they are:  (1) liberation from the traditional and secular worldview (2) incorporating key concepts of Islam. Third, If the Islamization occurs in the soul, and the soul is the location of knowledge seats, then, the Islamization is automatically leading to the Islamization of contemporary knowledge.

Abstract

Sufism is a spiritual philosophy based on morals and intuition. It has affected the daily lives of Muslims and their behaviours as well. Actually, Sufism itself since its development has changed in terms of values, since it involves other knowledge which influences the purity of its teachings. To study the concept of Sufism and the history of its development, maintaining the purity of Sufism and returning it to the original teachings of tassawuf is needed especially in regards to Ibn Khaldun’s views since he is one of the scholars who emphasises the discussion and study of Sufism seriously and comprehensively. It can be seen by his objective in evaluating Sufism and producing the point of view to Sufism. Even as a historian and social expert, he also discusses the questions of Sufism from the root of the problem and its impact on the social life of Muslims. This study aims to analyse Ibn Khaldun’s views on the reality of Sufism and the history of its development with special reference to Syifā al-Sāil wa Taḥdzīb al-Masāl. To achieve these objectives, the library research method incorporating data collection and data analysis was used. Data analysis was done inductively and deductively. The results of the study have shown that Ibn Khaldun puts his own definition of Sufism comprehensively which is known as Mujahadah. The concept of mujahadah, according to him runs parallel to the history of the knowledge development and practices of Sufism. It began with mujahadah of taqwa, known among the early Sufis as zuhud and wara‘. Furthermore, mujahadah istiqamah and kashf are known as ladunī or Sufism.

Abstract

This article tries to offer Abdolkarim Soroush answer to problem of inaccuracy of religious attitudes in addressing religion and democracy as a government system. In Soroush’s view, peoples sees ideology as no longer valid, when they keep on a single interpretation as solid idea. They prefer on compound, nonsecterian and charitable ideas. This study uses a philosophical-critical analysis method. The article confirms: Soroush offers a new kalām (theology) approach as intermediary way between Islam and social problems. As an intellectual-mondial, he want to present Islam that can be universally understood, follows world community common sense, is not just traditional textual approach. This option is quite sensitive and full of risk, like his criticism toward Iranian post-revolutionary government.

Abstract

This research is try to explain the reason for thinking moderation of Muslims, who are divided in two in response to Covid-19. On the one hand it is fatalistic and some are rationally liberal. The data obtained was analyzed qualitatively using religious moderation theory consisting of 4 aspects, namely; Fiqḥ Al-Maqāṣid (فقه المقاصد), Fiqḥ Al-Mālāt (فقه المالات), Fiqḥ Al-Muwāzanat (فقه الموازنة), and Fiqḥ Al-Awlawiyāt (فقه الأولويات). In this study the authors concluded as follows; First, in the context of Fiqh Al-Maqāṣid (فقه المقاصد) and Fiqḥ Al-Mālāt (فقه المالات), the reason for the moderation of a Muslim religion in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic cannot separate between ikhtiar ruhaniyah and scientific ikhtiar. That means it takes an integral understanding that is not partial. It is not enough to offer only religious methods, because human beings are physical beings. Nor is it enough just through medical because man is also a spiritual being. Second, in the context of Fiqḥ Al-Awlawiyāt (فقه الأولويات), should as a Muslim be required the ability to ground the reasoning of putting public logic above private logic, both in aspects of "ubudiyah" and "mu'amalah". Third, in the context of Fiqḥ Al-Muwāzanat (فقه الموازنة), should every Muslim put the reason hifẓ al-nafs (keeping the soul) among other maintenance.
