Abstract

The Kamang War was part of the Belasting War of 1908. This resistance is regarded as one of the regional wars that significantly influenced the struggle of the Minangkabau people. This article explores how spirituality and religiosity were present and became essential elements in the Kamang War. This study employed the historical method using a qualitative approach to systematically reconstruct and analyze past events based on historical sources obtained through library research and interviews with members of the Kamang community. The interviews were conducted to explore the community's collective memory of the spirituality and religiosity associated with the Kamang War. The findings reveal that spirituality essentially a connection with the transcendent served as both a driving force behind the outbreak of the war and as an instrument shaping its course. Through mystical ritual practices imbued with symbolic meaning, spirituality functioned as a strategic tool for traditional societies in warfare. These rituals acted as mechanisms for attack, defense, motivation, social solidarity, and the reaffirmation of collective belief in the legitimacy of their struggle. As tensions escalated, scholars of the Syattariyah Sufi Order (Tarekat Syattariyah) played a pivotal role in instilling resistance among the populace against Dutch colonial policies. Religious conviction inspired the Minangkabau people to fight for a sacred mission, as the war against the Dutch was perceived as a form of jihad.

Abstract

This article discusses the relationship between Masyumi and Muhammadiyah in Selayar using historical research methods (Heuristic, Verification, Interpretation, and Historiography). The historical sources used are archival sources related to Masyumi. The research results show that Masyumi became the party with the third-largest number of members in South Sulawesi and the largest in Selayar. The main factor that caused Masyumi to be well-received in Selayar was the Masyumi party officials who also served as members of Muhammadiyah. The role of several Muhammadiyah figures who also held positions in the Masyumi Party in Selayar includes; K.H. Haiyyung, the founder of Muhammadiyah who became the Chairman of the Masyumi Council of Scholars, Ma’galatung Dg. Pasolong, the Chairman of the Selayar Branch of Muhammadiyah on July 30, 1940, who became the chairman of the Selayar Branch of Masyumi at its inception, Sulaeman Abbas, a young Muhammadiyah figure who became the Chairman of the Selayar Branch of the Masyumi Party in its early period, Rauf Rahman, a Muhammadiyah figure who became the Chairman of the Masyumi Party replacing Sulaeman Abbas around the end of 1952, and Abdul Kadir Kasim, the Chairman of the Selayar Branch of Muhammadiyah from 1951-1968 who became the Chairman of the Masyumi Party around 1958 until Masyumi was dissolved. From this research, it is proven that the alignment of Muhammadiyah and Masyumi did not only occur in national-level politics but also in local-level politics. In the end, this research contributes to the strengthening of national identity in the millennial era.

Abstract

Research on colonial enterprises has generally emphasized economic performance while paying limited attention to colonial archives as products of power relations and to collective memory as complementary historical evidence. This study reconstructs the history of Michiels–Arnold Landen (MAL), a colonial plantation company operating in the Dutch East Indies from 1887 to 1942, by integrating critical archival analysis with collective memory. Using the historical method, the study examines company reports, financial statements, shareholders’ meeting minutes, colonial newspapers, government records, historical maps, and oral testimonies collected through field observation. The findings demonstrate that MAL evolved through organizational restructuring, commodity diversification, territorial expansion, and administrative modernization, reflecting its integration into the broader structure of colonial capitalism. The study further argues that colonial archives were not merely repositories of factual information but also instruments that represented corporate legitimacy, administrative order, and colonial authority while marginalizing agrarian conflicts and local experiences. Collective memory preserved by communities in Cileungsi, Cibarusa, Jonggol, and surrounding areas complements and verifies archival evidence by preserving the spatial and social traces of the former plantation landscape. By combining colonial archives with collective memory, this study contributes to the historiography of colonial business history and demonstrates that corporate history can be more comprehensively reconstructed through the integration of documentary and community-based historical sources.

Abstract

This study focuses on the diplomacy of the Ternate Sultanate in the 16th century. Specifically, this study describes the Ternate-Portuguese alliance in political control and trade monopoly in the Maluku region. This study used historical methods to reconstruct and analyze 16th-century Ternate diplomacy. The method included heuristik, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The primary sources used were not only local sources such as the Hikayat Ternate but also Portuguese archives and chronicles such as Descobrimentos Antigo y Modernos by Antonio Galvao, as well as the Insulindia archive from Volumes 1 to 4, and used English and VOC archives as support. The results of the study show that Ternate diplomacy was pragmatic and adaptive, characterized by trade cooperation with the Portuguese to secure market access and military technology, while utilizing the relationship to consolidate internal power and suppress regional rivals such as Tidore. However, this diplomatic relationship also contained tensions due to excessive Portuguese political intervention. Following the collapse of this moral-based reciprocity, Ternate's diplomacy underwent a pragmatic shift during its interactions with the VOC in the 17th century. The Sultanate transitioned towards a highly legalistic and contractual diplomatic framework, actively utilizing formal treaties to dictate terms of military protection against the Spanish and to guarantee its sovereign survival.  In conclusion, the diplomacy of the Sultanate of Ternate was not merely cooperative, but was a strategic instrument to maintain sovereignty, maximize economic benefits, and assert its hegemony as the center of political power in Maluku during the early days of European colonialism.

Abstract

Abstract

Indonesia's high vulnerability to natural disasters necessitates a collaborative disaster governance framework that engages both state and non-state actors. This study examines Muhammadiyah’s emergency response to the large-scale floods and landslides that struck Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra beginning on 26 November 2025. Adopting a qualitative case study approach, the research draws on secondary data obtained from official reports, institutional publications, credible online media, and relevant scholarly literature. The data were analyzed using thematic content analysis to identify the organizational strategies, humanitarian interventions, and governance mechanisms employed during the emergency response. The findings reveal that Muhammadiyah played a pivotal role in disaster management by mobilizing its extensive institutional network, including the Muhammadiyah Disaster Management Center (MDMC), Lazismu, hospitals, schools, universities, mosques, and local branches. Humanitarian interventions encompassed volunteer deployment, logistics distribution, emergency shelter provision, healthcare services, psychosocial support, and Islamic philanthropic fundraising. The study demonstrates that Muhammadiyah has developed a distinctive faith-based disaster governance model that integrates institutional capacity, Islamic philanthropy, social solidarity, and religious values into coordinated humanitarian action. This model strengthens community resilience while complementing government-led disaster response efforts. By highlighting the strategic contribution of a faith-based civil society organization in emergency management, this study enriches the literature on collaborative disaster governance and offers practical insights into the role of religious organizations in enhancing disaster preparedness, response effectiveness, and societal resilience in disaster-prone countries.

Abstract

Historiography has generally portrayed Budi Utomo as the pioneer of the Indonesian national awakening and a driving force in indigenous education, while its contribution to women's education at the local level has received limited scholarly attention. This study aims to examine the role of Budi Utomo Pati in pioneering indigenous women's education during the Dutch East Indies period. The research employs the historical method, including heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography, using Verslag Boedi-Oetomo, Dutch colonial newspapers, and colonial records as primary sources. The findings reveal that Budi Utomo Pati not only advocated women's education but also institutionalized it through the establishment of a girls' school, the employment of salaried teachers, community-based financial support, systematic organizational management, and the acquisition of colonial government subsidies. The study further demonstrates that indigenous male elites served as agents of change in expanding women's access to education at the local level. These findings enrich the historiography of women's education by showing that educational emancipation during the colonial period was driven not only by colonial educational policies or female reformers, but also by the initiatives of modern indigenous organizations.

Abstract

Penelitian ini mengkaji perkembangan pemikiran A.A.
