Abstract

Abstract

This article analyzes social protests in early 20th-century Batavia, focusing on the resistance of community leader Entong Gendut against the Dutch East Indies government. Employing a historical approach, the research draws upon primary sources like newspapers, archival documents, and relevant historical literature, like in Memorie van Overgave Residen van Batavia 1987, De Locomotief newspaper. It reveals that Entong Gendut's resistance encompassed diverse forms of protest, including demonstrations, strikes, and public campaigns. His struggle against the colonial government heightened awareness of indigenous rights and ignited a broader social protest movement in Batavia. This research enriches our understanding of early 20th-century Batavian social protest dynamics and Entong Gendut's role in raising awareness of colonial injustice. The European government-imposed restrictions on the indigenous population to prevent them from expanding their political and social influence. It underscores the significance of historical studies in recognizing the contribution of local figures to anti-colonial struggles and their relevance to broader Indonesian history. They fought to defend their land from colonial rule.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This article examines the construction of Indigenous women’s identities in the Dutch East Indies press between 1930 and 1935, focusing on two central issues that preoccupied women at the time: education and health. The implementation of the Ethical Policy heightened women’s awareness of their place within colonial society, prompting them to articulate their ideas through the printed media. Among the most significant platforms were Sedar and Pedoman Isteri. This study investigates how these publications represented women’s roles and positions in relation to education and health, and argues that—despite stemming from distinct ideological orientations—both played equally vital roles in advancing Indonesian women’s causes. By employing historical methods and qualitative analysis of primary sources, particularly articles from Sedar and Pedoman Isteri, this research adopts Judith Butler’s gender performativity framework to interpret the findings. The analysis reveals that Sedar, as a progressive outlet, emphasized education as a pathway to liberating women from patriarchal structures, while Pedoman Isteri reinforced domestic roles through narratives on health and family welfare. Rather than negating one another, these approaches reflect the diversity of strategies women employed to negotiate their place in the colonial public sphere. The study underscores that the colonial press functioned as a crucial arena for women to shape and contest their identities, and demonstrates that women’s historical agency was multiple and complex, rather than singular. By tracing these dynamics, this research offers a historical lens through which to understand the enduring struggles over women’s access to education and health in Indonesia today.

Abstract

This article examines Bayt al-Hikmah as a prototype of the scientific library in classical Islamic civilization by highlighting its institutional characteristics and its relevance for the development of contemporary Islamic digital libraries. The study employs a qualitative method with a historical-institutional analytical approach through library research, drawing on primary sources such as al-Fihrist and secondary literature in Islamic history and library science using thematic content analysis. The findings indicate that Bayt al-Hikmah functioned not only as a translation center but also as a research institution, a library, and a cross-cultural scholarly forum that integrated the production, preservation, and dissemination of knowledge. Librarians played significant roles in cataloguing, transliteration, and manuscript conservation, which, from a modern perspective, reflect early forms of knowledge management and the functions of knowledge brokers. The study further identifies institutional features such as openness, multidisciplinarity, and state-supported scholarly collaboration as key elements shaping the intellectual legacy of Bayt al-Hikmah. The research concludes that Bayt al-Hikmah represents an early knowledge ecosystem whose principles remain highly relevant for the development of Islamic digital libraries, particularly in the areas of open access, digital preservation, and information management.

Abstract

This article examines the relationship between religiosity and corruption in post-Reform Indonesia, positioning religion as both a normative foundation and an ethical framework for governance. Historically, the principle of Belief in the One and Only God enshrined in Pancasila aimed to reinforce moral integrity within state administration. However, recent political developments indicate an increasing appropriation of religious values, undermining their effectiveness as genuine moral guides in political power. Through a qualitative literature review and cross-national comparative analysis, this study explores the connections among religious values, moral consciousness, and the quality of political institutions. The findings reveal that Islamic ethical principles such as ghulul (misappropriation of public resources), risywah(bribery), and khianat (betrayal of trust) strongly condemn abuses of power and violations of public trust; however, they are insufficient to combat corruption without robust institutional support. Comparative analysis with advanced democracies, including Germany, Japan, and Scandinavian countries, demonstrates that governance integrity is primarily maintained by the rule of law, a transparent political culture, and accountable institutions, rather than by high levels of societal religiosity. Conversely, in developing countries like Indonesia and Bangladesh, high religiosity often coexists with social tolerance toward corruption due to weak law enforcement and entrenched patronage-based political cultures. This study emphasizes the need for a dual strategy to combat corruption in Indonesia: internalizing religious moral values at the individual level while strengthening political institutions to enhance transparency, accountability, and support for substantive democracy. Practically, these findings highlight the importance of integrating religious ethical values into anticorruption policies, bureaucratic reforms, and the enhancement of law enforcement institutions to promote sustainable and integrity-based governance.
