Abstract

Background: Softliner is commonly used to provide convenience for edentulous patients. However, the use of softliner can cause denture stomatitis due to colonization of Candida albicans. Sargassum sp. contains active compounds of steroids, alkaloids, phenols, triterpenoids, act as antibacterial and antifungal. The use of Sargassum sp. in the form of effervescent as a denture cleanser can prevent denture stomatitis, and it’s expected not to affect the compressive strength. This study aimed to study the concentration variation of Sargassum sp. effervescent towards antifungal and compressive strength silicone based softlinerMethod: 20 sampels of silicone based softliner (10x3x2mm) divided into 5 groups. K(-) soaked in sterilled aquadest; K(+) in Polident solution; P1 in 10% effervescent Sargassum sp. solution; P2 20% ; P3 40%, for 15minutes. Candida calculated by colony counter (CFU/ml). Compressive strength measured by Universal Testing Machine.Result: Candida albicans in the K+ group is the lowest, while the K- group shows the highest value. In P1, P2, P3 group the value of Candida albicans is higher than K+ group, but much lower than K-. The compressive strength of K+ group shows the lowest value but in P3 group shows the highest value compared to other groups. Conclusion: The 10% concentration of effervescent extract Sargassum sp. is effective in reducing the number of Candida albicans in silicone based softliner compared to the K- group. The most effective concentration of effervescent extract Sargassum sp. in reducing the Candida albicans’ growth is 40%. The higher concentration of Sargassum sp. resulting in higher compressive strength.

Abstract

Background: Application of fissure sealants to young permanent teeth is one of the preventive measures for caries in the field of dentistry. Fissure sealants based on glass ionomer cement (GIC) have the advantage of releasing fluoride. Sodium fluoride and acidulated phosphate fluoride (APF) are remineralization agents because they can increase remineralization by altering hydroxyapatite to fluorapatite and this in turn makes fluorine able to increase pH. Fluoride can prevent caries by increasing remineralization of the enamel that has just been demineralized by acids produced by plaque bacteria. The aim of this study is to compare the shear bond strength fissure sealant based on glass ionomer between sodium fluoride and APF topical fluor applicationMethod: This research applied true experimental design with post test only control group design. The 21 maxillary permanent premolars were distributed into 3 groups, namely the control group (K1), the treatment group added 5% sodium fluoride (K2), and the treatment group added 1.23% APF (K3). Result: One Way ANOVA and post hoc LSD analysis test displayed no significant difference in each group. This could be due to the material used as a conditioner prior to the GIC application. The addition of fluoride ions will inhibit the demineralization process of the enamel produced by the application of conditioner. So it does not rule out that it will interfere with the attachment of the GIC material used as a fissure sealant in this research. Conclusion: There was no significant difference in shear bond strength of fissure sealant based on glass ionomer between sodium fluoride and acidulated phosphate fluoride topical application.

Abstract

Background: Liver is an organ that performs a role in metabolism and detoxification of chemical substances. The use of immunosuppressive drugs excessively not only become predisposing factor for oral candidiasis, but also can cause damage and affect liver’s function. Hyperbaric oxygen treatment was known to preserve hepatocytes and prevent liver damage. This study was aimed to investigate the effect of hyperbaric oxygen treatment on liver hepatocyte damage in oral candidiasis immunosuppressed rats.Method: We divided fifteen Wistar rats randomly into three groups: G1 (healthy rats), G2 (immunosuppressed rats with oral candidiasis), and G3 (immunosuppressed rats with oral candidiasis given hyperbaric oxygen). The immunosuppressed condition was made by giving dexamethasone and tetracycline orally for 14 days. Induction of Candida albicans 0.1 cc was conducted on the fourth day. Hyperbaric oxygen treatment was given for five days continuously. The histopathological changes in the liver were measured by counting the amount of normal hepatocytes, pycnotic, karyolysis, karyorrhexis, and score of necrosis area using light microscope with 400x magnification.Result: The amount of pycnotic, karyolysis, and karyorrhexis hepatocytes increased in G2 and decreased significantly in G3, likewise the score of necrosis area. The statistical test using oneway Anova and LSD test showed significant differences (p<0,05) in pycnotic, karyolysis, and karyorrhexis hepatocytes between G1, G2, and G3.Conclusion: The hyperbaric oxygen treatment effect on liver hepatocyte damage in oral candidiasis immunosuppressed rats.
