Abstract

The implementation of green building concepts in tropical climates often creates a paradox between energy efficiency and visual comfort. Building A of the Vocational School of UNDIP holds EDGE Advanced certification from the Green Building Council Indonesia (2021), recognizing 65% energy savings through facade strategies and daylighting optimization. This study aims to: (1) evaluate illuminance distribution across 8 classrooms (A1.1, A2.3, A3.1–A3.4, A4.3–A4.4) against SNI 03-6197-2000; (2) analyze glare potential using the Daylight Glare Probability (DGP) indicator; (3) identify user perceptions and adaptive behaviors; and (4) formulate facade design recommendations based on vertical zoning. Using a quantitative Post-Occupancy Evaluation approach, the study integrates Climate-Based Daylight Modeling simulation via Velux Daylight Visualizer at 09:00, 12:00, and 16:00 on June 21, September 21, and December 21 with questionnaires administered to 64 student respondents. Findings empirically confirm the green building paradox: despite average illuminance meeting SNI thresholds, extreme distribution disparities and critical DGP values in west-facing classrooms at 16:00 indicate severe glare. User visual stress perceptions and negative adaptive behaviors align with simulation results, confirming the failure of existing vertical shading to redistribute daylight. Light shelves and extended overhangs based on vertical zoning are recommended to restore a human-centric learning environment.

Abstract

Artificial lighting plays a crucial role in product display, including for goods sold in traditional markets such as Klewer Market, Solo, renowned for its batik. This article aims to describe the artificial lighting system applied by batik vendors at Klewer Market. The research was conducted by observing the interior elements, including wall and ceiling conditions, and furniture, as well as measuring the lighting quality using a spectrometer at four kiosks. The results of these observations and measurements were analysed in accordance with recommended standards and theories related to lighting for commercial buildings. Observations revealed a lack of attention to the type and direction of lighting, as well as the lighting fixtures that should support the commercial function of market stalls. Measurements indicated that lighting in these stalls did not meet standards in terms of brightness and color rendering, and the use of white lights did not create a positive atmosphere in the store. It is recommended that stall owners pay more attention to lighting to ensure appropriate brightness, color rendering, color temperature, and lighting direction, which is expected to increase sales. The main issue identified is the low lighting quality in terms of brightness and color accuracy, which reduces the visual appeal of batik products. Practically, vendors can enhance product perception and attractiveness by adopting lighting with a color rendering index (CRI) of and correlated color temperature (CCT) between 3500 – 4000 K.

Abstract

This study aims to explore public perceptions of the cultural elements that shape the image of Gorontalo City. Amid rapid urban development that may gradually erode local wisdom values, strengthening the city’s identity has become increasingly important. Although Gorontalo’s cultural identity and city image have been widely discussed, studies examining cultural elements as determinants of city image from the community’s perspective remain limited. This research employs a qualitative approach using grounded theory. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, field observations, and open-ended questionnaires involving 100 respondents from Gorontalo City. The data were analyzed through open coding, axial coding, and selective coding to identify key categories and the relationships among cultural elements. The findings reveal that the image of Gorontalo City is shaped by three main clusters: Artistic Motifs, Traditional Architecture, and Islamic Symbols. Karawo, Pateda, Wulunga, and Manggis motifs emerge as the most recognizable aesthetic markers, while Pahangga, Makuta, and Tuwango represent the city’s architectural identity. Islamic symbols, including calligraphy, domes, and jalamba, further reinforce Gorontalo’s religious character as the “Veranda of Medina.” The study develops a Triadic Model of Gorontalo City Image, which explains the integration of aesthetic, structural, and spiritual values in shaping the city image and provides a conceptual framework for culturally based urban design and development.

Abstract

Traditional architecture in Lombok holds significant cultural value, particularly through the use of local timber and natural materials. However, lifestyle changes and the declining availability of traditional materials have led to the degradation of traditional buildings. This study responds to these challenges by proposing modifications that enhance structural performance while adopting reversible design principles to maintain cultural integrity. Focusing on the Berugaq structure in Bayan Village, North Lombok, the research aims to develop a sustainable and material-efficient modified Berugaq model that preserves traditional architectural values. A comparative case study method is used to assess traditional and modified Berugaq structures in terms of material efficiency, construction cost, installation practicality, and maintenance. Data collection includes field observations, physical measurements, cultural interviews, and 3D modeling. The findings show that adapting materials and connection systems—such as using standardized timber and practical steel-plate joints (bolt-on)—improves resource efficiency, reduces construction time, and simplifies maintenance without dismantling the entire structure. This study demonstrates how modern materials can be integrated into traditional architecture without compromising cultural meaning, offering a practical approach to preserving cultural heritage.

Abstract

The increasing energy consumption of buildings in tropical regions highlights the need for adaptive and climate-responsive building envelope strategies. Climate Adaptive Building Shells (CABS) have emerged as a promising approach to improving energy efficiency and indoor comfort in tropical contexts such as Indonesia. This study aims to review and synthesize existing research on CABS in Indonesia based on previous studies. The research employed a literature review of ten selected articles through a systematic process of identification, screening, and content analysis. The selected articles were subsequently coded based on the study location, building typology, physical domain, adaptation scale, research method, key findings, and research limitations before being synthesized to map the development of Climate Adaptive Building Shell (CABS) research in Indonesia. The results indicate that CABS research in Indonesia is predominantly simulation-based, with a strong emphasis on thermal and optical performance, while field validation and multi-domain integration remain limited. Despite these constraints, the reviewed studies consistently demonstrate the potential of adaptive façades to reduce cooling loads and enhance indoor environmental quality. This study highlights the need for more integrated, multi-domain, and experimentally validated research to support the practical implementation of CABS in tropical buildings.

Abstract

Abstract

The East Borneo National Building is a conservation building established over 50 years ago, serving as a multi-purpose auditorium for various art and community events in Samarinda city. Over the last year, a 40% decline in usage has been observed, driven by user complaints regarding poor room acoustics. This issue forms the background and urgent objective of the current research to revitalize the use of the building. Initial field observations suggest the problem lies with room acoustics, speciafically the uneven sound distribution, which affects listener comfort. A subsequent questionnaire survey of 33 building users revealed that approximately 60% reported non-uniform sound dissemination within the auditorium. This finding was supported by sound level meter measurements which indicated an imbalance in sound intensity across different points in the room. The research employed a quantitative methodology, involving field observation, sound pressure level measurement using an sound level meter and sound distribution simulation utilizing the I-SIMPA acoustic software. The findings reveal that measurement points in the rear auditorium area and the area under the mezzanine floor exhibit relatively lower sound pressure level values compared to other areas, identifying an acoustic defect known as a sound shadow.

Abstract

Along with the development of the times, traditional markets continue to exist today. Johar Market is a traditional market that is still a traditional shopping center in the city of Semarang. The revitalization process at Johar Market in 2015 made Johar Market a new market that complies with SNI standards. The revitalization was carried out as an effort by the government to restore the cultural heritage building after it burned down. The restoration of the form and design of Johar Market, which was first inaugurated in 1839, was done in order to restore the essence of the cultural heritage building. The restoration of the form of Johar Market caused changes in the spatial trading space and the behavior of traders in order to adapt to the new form. This study aims to identify the optimization of trading space within the Johar Traditional Market in Semarang. The method used in this study is a descriptive qualitative method followed by an in-depth analysis of the trading space. The study results indicate that the arrangement of merchandise in Johar Market is a social activity of traders that demonstrates togetherness and a sense of brotherhood among traditional market traders.

Abstract

Traditional markets are one of the key centers of economic activity in community life, including Jatingaleh Market located in the city of Semarang. In addition to serving as a hub of economic activity, Jatingaleh Market has a unique design feature: the use of mushroom-shaped columns distributed throughout the building. These columns function not only as structural elements but also help form spatial zones that influence the internal spatial layout. Based on this uniqueness, this study aims to understand how the spaces in Jatingaleh Market are formed and function as a result of the distribution of the mushroom columns. The research approach involves examining the market’s spatial organization, identifying the zones that emerge, and analyzing the function of each space in shaping the overall spatial structure. The findings of this study are expected to serve as a foundation for developing traditional market designs that are more functional, comfortable, and responsive to the needs of the community.
