Abstract

Caries that affects children under 72 months of age is called Early Childhood Caries (ECC). The high caries prevalence rate which reaches 81.5% in children aged 3-4 years is still a problem for Indonesia. One of the reasons for the high incidence of caries in preschoolers is the inappropriate pattern of breastfeeding or formula feeding. The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between patterns of formula feeding and ECC in preschool children in Ketileng Village, Todanan, Blora. This study used an analytic observational research design with a cross sectional approach. The research sample was 69 respondents using a purposive sampling technique. Data were obtained from the results of dental examinations using the PUFA index and a questionnaire filled out by parents/guardians of students. Data analysis used the chi square statistical test. The results of the study showed duration, duration, frequency of consumption of formula milk, use of bottles/pacifiers, addition of sweeteners to consumption of formula milk and history of breastfeeding up to 2 years of age, each of which showed a value of p 0.05, which means there is a relationship with ECC. The conclusion of this study is that there is a relationship between the pattern of formula feeding and the presence of ECC in preschool children in Ketileng Village, Todanan, Blora.

Abstract

Abstract

Root canal infection is a polymicrobial infection that is a progression of chronic caries affecting the dental nerve tissue and surrounding root tissue, which can be accompanied by extremely uncomfortable sharp pain. Enterococcus faecalis is one of the infecting agents that can be found in primary root canals experiencing endodontic infections and is resistant to root canal irrigation materials, thus leading to root canal treatment failure. Herbal plants have been used since ancient times by the Indonesian people to address health issues due to the believed beneficial properties of their constituents. Research on torch ginger reports pharmacological activities such as antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and anti-aging effects. Torch ginger (E. elatior) is a spice plant reported to have antibacterial bioactive compounds. This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity of ethanol extract from torch ginger leaves (E. elatior) against Enterococcus faecalis bacteria. The Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method was used to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) value and the streaking method from MIC testing to determine the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) with 8 concentrations and 2 controls. Data analysis of the MIC and MBC values was performed using One-Way ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis parametric tests. The ethanol extract of torch ginger leaves (E. elatior) has minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) values against Enterococcus faecalis bacteria. The minimum inhibitory concentration of the ethanol extract of torch ginger leaves is at a concentration of 3.125%, while the minimum bactericidal concentration is at a concentration of 65%.

Abstract

Rampant caries in toddlers or early childhood caries (ECC) can affect chewing and the ability to eat and drink. The prevalence of caries in the 3-4 year age group in Indonesia in 2018 was 81.5%. A recent World Health Organization (WHO) report stated that dental caries can affect children's growth. Balanced evidence shows that ECC is associated with stunting in children. Rampant caries in primary teeth hurt nutritional status, mediated by caries depth, chronic inflammation, and oral pain. A dental and oral health caries prevention program is needed to prevent stunting. This research aims to develop and test the feasibility of a Tooth Protection Model for Preventing Caries and Stunting in Early Childhood. The research method used is Research and Development/ (RD), consisting of searching for potential problems, collecting data through literature review and FGD, Design Making, Validation of three preventive dentistry experts and three pediatric dentistry experts, Revision and User Feasibility Test for 30 toddler mother. Data analysis uses an Interclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) with a two-way mixed type. The results of expert validation obtained an average score of 75 (decent category with revision), with good inter-rater reliability (ICC = 0.750). The results of user trials on 18 mothers of toddlers produced an average score of 90.67 (very feasible category without revision), with an ICC value of 0.860, meaning good reliability. The research conclusion shows that the Tooth Protection Model is worthy of implementation as a comprehensive approach to preventing caries and stunting in toddlers.

Abstract

Oral health is a recurring problem because children are still in the transition from baby teeth to permanent teeth. At this stage, the child is still dependent on the parents; therefore, the role of the parents is to teach and communicate the importance of dental and oral health. This research aims to identify the characteristics, knowledge, and motivation of parents with the preventive damage to children. This study design used cross-sectional study approach and the number of samples used in this study was 111 parents with a total sampling technique. The statistical analysis of the study uses Kendall's Tau C. Research results obtained by respondents: parents aged 35-45 years as many as 64 (57.7%), females by 85 (76.6%), high school education/PT 84 (75.7%) parents, and income levels 4,000,000 as 80 (7.1%) parents. Statistical tests have shown that there is a relationship between knowledge (p-value = 0.000) and parental motivation (p-value = 0.000) with the prevention of tooth decay in children, but no relationship between age (p-value = 0.424), gender (p-value = 0.01), education level (p-value = 0.101) and parental income level (p-value = 0.454) with a dental safety measure on grades 1-3. Therefore, oral health education is necessary to maintain parental knowledge and motivation.
