Abstract

Kebun Inovasi is one of the teaching factories at Politeknik Negeri Jember (Polije) that produces various food and horticultural crops sustainably, including watermelon. However, observations showed a high abundance of weeds growing in the watermelon cultivation areas. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the vegetation composition and utilization potential of weeds in the watermelon cultivation areas at Kebun Inovasi Polije to support appropriate weed management planning. Sampling was conducted using a purposive sampling technique with the quadrat method. A total of ten plots (1 × 1 m) were established in areas with weed vegetation. Weed identification was carried out based on morphological characteristics and relevant literature. The results showed that 17 weed species belonging to 13 families were found, with a moderate species diversity index. Torenia crustacea was identified as the most dominant species. The identified weed species have potential uses in the fields of health, environmental management, and industry.

Abstract

 The Resun River is located in North Lingga Village, Lingga Regency, Riau Islands. Besides being a tourist attraction, the Resun River is also used by local communities for anthropogenic activities such as bathing and washing. The presence of macrozoobenthos can serve as an indicator in assessing river water quality. This research was conducted from July to September 2023 with the aim of determining the structure of the macrozoobenthos community and water quality status based on the presence of macrozoobenthos in the Resun River, Lingga Regency. Sampling locations were determined using a purposive sampling method, taking into account land use conditions and anthropogenic activities, with three sampling stations. The data analysis used was in the form of macrozoobenthos community structure and Family Biotic Index (FBI). Macrozoobenthos found in the Resun River consisted of 5 families. The predominance of Elmidae at Station 1 and 2 suggests highly oxygenated and relatively undisturbed environmental conditions. Conversely, the increased abundance of Chironomidae at Station 3 indicates greater anthropogenic influence, reflecting spatial variation in disturbance levels within the Resun River ecosystem. Based on the Family Biotic Index analysis, the water quality of the Resun River ranged from excellent to good, with FBI values of 3.34 – 4.57, indicating slight degradation of the aquatic ecosystem. The Resun River generally demonstrated favorable ecological conditions. Nonetheless, anthropogenic pressures observed near Station 3 merit further investigation, as they may contribute to increased inputs of organic pollutants into the aquatic system.

Abstract

The diagnosis of Surra disease has limitations that make it impossible to test Trypanosoma evansi samples directly on all samples. This is due to limitations in time and medical and paramedical personnel in field diagnosis, thus requiring research on T. evansi live media solutions. The purpose of this study was to determine the lifespan of T. evansi in various media solutions and which media solution was most effective. This study was experimental in nature, using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) and three replicates. Data analysis was performed using the LDS test, followed by an Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) test to find significant differences in the lifespan of T. evansi in various media solutions; Phosphate Buffer Saline Glucose (PBSG), Dulbeccos Modified Eagle Medium (DMEM) 1X + GlutaMAXTM, NaCl infusion (sodium chloride 0.9%), coconut water. The results of the statistical test at room temperature showed significant differences, with the Phosphate Buffer Saline Glucose (PBSG) solution sample being the best media solution for the survival of T. evansi parasites.

Abstract

 Habitats with good ecological conditions are closely associated with the distribution of macrofauna, which play an important role in maintaining ecosystem stability. This study aims to investigate the distribution of macrofauna based on species richness, diversity, and evenness in Gita Persada Butterfly Park, Teluk Betung Utara, Bandar Lampung. The line transect method combined with sweep net and pitfall trap techniques was applied in this study. The results showed differences across sampling points. At nectar points using the sweep net technique, a high category was obtained for the richness index (7.847), diversity index (3.176), and evenness index (0.908). Furthermore, the evenness index at edge points also obtained the highest category (0.964). The richness index at nectar points using the pitfall trap technique obtained a low category (3.284), whereas at vegetation stands, the highest values were obtained for the diversity index (1.864) and evenness index (0.809). These findings indicate that the distribution of macrofauna can reflect environmental conditions and habitat quality.

Abstract

Bee bread is a naturally fermented product produced by honey bees (Apis mellifera)composed of a mixture of bee salivary gland secretions, pollen, and honey, and is rich in bioactive compounds such as phenolics and flavonoids. The antioxidant activity of bee bread has been reported to vary and is influenced by geographical origin, bee species, extraction solvent, and analytical methods. This review article aims to compare the antioxidant activity of bee bread extracts from various geographic regions of bees based on the results of previous studies. The literature review consists of scientific articles published from 2017 to 2024 obtained from indexed databases such as Google Scholar, PubMed, ScienceDirect, Springer,and Scopus. The type of solvent, antioxidant testing technique, and activity results reported in the form of IC50 or percentage inhibition were all included in the analysis. The results of the study showed that bee bread extracts from Malaysia, especially those extracted using 70%ethanol solvent, were reported to have the highest antioxidant activity. 70% ethanol solvent had the best effectiveness in extracting bioactive compounds. In conclusion, bee bread has the potential as a source of natural antioxidants that can be developed as functional food ingredients and health products.

Abstract

Phytoliths are microscopic silica deposits that form in plant tissue and have specific shapes depending on the species and parts of the plant, one of which is rice plants. This research aims to describe the morphology of grain phytoliths from rice plants (Oryza sativa) cultivated by the community around KCBN Muaro Jambi Temple Compound, Jambi Province. Rice grain samples were obtained through interview methods and observations of agricultural activities. Data analysis includes the process of observing grain characteristics, extraction using the LOI (Loss on ignition) method, phytolith observation using a Polaris microscope with 400x magnification, then documentation and measurement of phytolith findings. Data processing by looking at the average of each variable measured from phytoliths using a histogram graph. Phytolith characteristics were assessed based on the middle width of the double-peaked phytoliths, and the results showed that Jarum Mas rice had the greatest middle width, whereas Bujang Marinai rice had the smallest.

Abstract

Indonesia has high biodiversity, including flora with ecological, economic, and health values, one of which is periwinkle (Catharanthus roseus (L.) G. Don) which is used as an ornamental and medicinal plant. However, studies on the phenology and morphological characterization of periwinkle leaves are still limited, so this study aims to analyze the morphological and phenological characterization of its leaves. The study was conducted for 66 days with an observational descriptive method using qualitative and quantitative approaches. The research sample for morphological and phenological characterization of leaves consisted of 15 leaves from 5 stems of the same plant. Characterization was carried out when the leaves were fully expanded. The samples observed were in the gardens of residents' homes in Mendalo Indah, Jambi Luar Kota District, Muaro Jambi, Jambi Province. Observations were carried out every day at 11:00 – 13:00 WIB starting from the emergence of leaf shoots until the leaves fall. Environmental factors were measured using the Galaxy Sensor and AccuWeather applications. The results of the study showed that the periwinkle (C. roseus (L.) G. Don) leaves are classified as single leaves with an oblong shape, blunt tips and bases, and pinnate leaf bone arrangement, flat leaf edges, and their location is oppositely crossed, where every two leaves on the stem node are arranged crosswise with the two leaves below. The phenology includes the initiation phase to morphogenesis for 3 days, leaf bud opening for 3 days, expansion phase for 14 days, yellowing leaf phase for 31 days, and leaf fall 15 days after. Environmental conditions during the observation were temperature 23.9 – 41.7 °C, air humidity 31.2 – 51.2%, light intensity 136.38 – 25781.00 Lux, and rainfall 0 – 34 mm.

Abstract

 Thermostable protease enzymes can be produced by thermophilic bacteria that act as biocatalysts in protein hydrolysis and have extensive industrial applications. The supply of stable and high-performance protease enzymes is still insufficient, encouraging exploration of thermophilic bacteria from extreme environments as potential producers. The aim of this study was to identify and characterize the macroscopic, microscopic, physiological, and biochemical features of thermophilic bacterial isolates that indicated protease production. This study was conducted using descriptive methods through rejuvenation, screening, and characterization of thermophilic bacteria isolated from the Sapan Hot Spring, South Solok Regency, as potential thermostable protease producers. Based on the results, six protease-producing thermophilic bacterial isolates, namely TUA-01, TUA-02, TUA-11, TUA-21, TUA-26, and TUA-31, with the highest Proteolytic Index (PI) value being isolate TUA-26. Characterization of the six protease-producing thermophilic bacterial isolates revealed differences in colony morphology characteristics, Gram-positive, rod-shaped cells, subterminal spores, motility, and catalase-positive. The thermophilic bacterial isolate TUA-26 has the potential to produce thermostable protease enzymes at high temperatures, making it highly promising for use in various biotechnology and industrial applications.

Abstract

The use of superior varieties is one of the important factors in efforts to increase productivity and production of lowland rice. However, each superior variety has advantages and disadvantages. The use of the chemical mutagen Ethyl Methane Sulfonate (EMS) is expected to increase genetic diversity and improve the characteristics of superior rice varieties. This research aims to determine the effect of EMS on the growth and production of several lowland rice varieties. The research was carried out at the Screen House, Faculty of Agriculture, University of North Sumatra, October 2023 – March 2024. This research used a factorial Randomized Block Design (RBD), with two treatment factors namely variety (IR64, Ciherang, Inpari 32) and EMS concentration (0%, 0.5%, 1%) and three replications. EMS treatment was carried out when the seeds were soaked for 4 hours. The rice seeds are sown in trays. Selected seedlings are planted in plastic tubs. The observation variables consisted of seedling growth, plant growth, flowering age, harvest age, yield and component of yield. Data were analyzed using ANOVA and Duncan's test at α 5%. The research results showed that rice variety factor had a significant effect on seedling growth, plant growth, number of panicles and panicle length. The highest number of tillers and number of panicles are found in the Ciherang variety. The EMS concentration factor had a significant effect on seedling height and panicle length. Interaction factors have a significant effect on seedling height.

Abstract

 Bioethanol is a promising renewable energy source that can reduce dependence on fossil fuels while supporting sustainable development. In Indonesia, cassava and sugarcane, including their agricultural residues, have significant potential as bioethanol feedstocks due to their abundant availability and high carbohydrate content. This study aimed to synthesize the development of bioethanol production technologies based on cassava and sugarcane in Indonesia and to evaluate their sustainability from environmental, economic, and social perspectives. A literature review was conducted using scientific publications retrieved from Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, and ResearchGate published between 2015 – 2025. Following a systematic selection process based on predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria, 15 articles were selected and analyzed using a narrative synthesis approach. The results indicate that Saccharomyces cerevisiae is the most widely used microorganism for fermentation, while bioethanol yield is strongly influenced by feedstock characteristics, pretreatment methods, hydrolysis techniques, and fermentation conditions. From a sustainability perspective, utilizing agricultural residues such as sugarcane bagasse and cassava waste contributes to reducing agro-industrial waste, lowering carbon emissions, increasing economic value, and supporting national energy security. However, most studies remain limited to laboratory-scale experiments and rarely incorporate Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) or Techno-Economic Assessment (TEA). Future studies should focus on pilot- and industrial-scale implementation while integrating comprehensive sustainability assessments to support large-scale bioethanol development in Indonesia.
