Abstract

Batik is a cultural heritage of the Indonesian nation. Schools that can develop batik are very effective and have benefits for all groups. This is relevant to the Arts and Culture subject at the junior high school level. This study aims to introduce Batik to students as a step towards preserving Batik and teaching them that creating Batik is easy and can be done by junior high school students. This research is qualitative and uses the Design-Based Research (DBR) method to produce effective learning outcomes. Furthermore, this study applies the Design-Based Research (DBR) method with the Reeves model, which is oriented towards developing practice-based solutions in an educational context. This method is in line with the research and development (R&D) approach, which aims to create or refine products to better suit user needs. Conceptually, DBR emphasizes a practical process that includes problem identification, design, implementation, and systematic product evaluation. The results of the research on the development of techniques using electric canting and colet techniques provide convenience and effectiveness to junior high school students, thereby significantly improving their skills. Exploring the implementation of electric canting and the colet technique is easy and efficient for producing batik. Compared to conventional canting, it is efficient in terms of saving materials and tools, as well as saving time and effort. Another advantage is the ability to produce richer and more varied colors, including achieving color gradation, and serving as a branding tool for batik fabrics.

Abstract

The learning of Banyumasan folk songs in art colleges represents an important effort in preserving local culture. Currently, the preservation of folk songs faces significant challenges due to the lack of educational media and the low interest among younger generations. Given the limited knowledge in this area, it is essential to incorporate this material into the curriculum of the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Surakarta. This learning process is expected to broaden students' knowledge and enhance their competencies in performing folk songs. This study aims to examine the learning process of Banyumasan folk songs at ISI Surakarta, focusing on teaching strategies, learning materials, the role of lecturers, as well as the challenges and contributions of this educational approach to local cultural preservation. The research method employed is qualitative descriptive, using data collection techniques such as observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The findings show that the learning of Banyumasan folk songs has been integrated into the curriculum through contextual, collaborative, and project-based approaches. The study also explores the methods used by instructors to help students understand and perform the songs effectively. This research highlights the strategic role of arts education in the revitalization and preservation of Banyumasan culture. These findings are expected to serve as a reference for the development of curriculum and learning strategies for Banyumasan folk songs in higher education institutions of the arts.

Abstract

Cycling ecotourism is a form of sustainable tourism that integrates environmental conservation, healthy lifestyles, and community empowerment. Tuban Regency has considerable potential for development through this concept, yet it remains underutilized. This research aims to design an ecotourism cycle planning strategy that can be implemented in Tuban Regency. This study employed an explanatory sequential mixed-method approach, combining quantitative surveys with qualitative interviews and route mapping using GPS and ArcGIS. The analysis focused on identifying tourism potential, exploring tourist motivations and preferences, and examining community perceptions. Findings indicate that tourists are primarily motivated by health, stress reduction, and social interaction, while communities generally support the development of cycling routes and related infrastructure. The study proposes five main cycling routes that connect natural and cultural attractions, complemented by infrastructure such as dedicated bike lanes, rest areas, and traffic signage. These initiatives are expected to empower local communities, enhance economic opportunities, and promote environmental sustainability. The cycle ecotourism developed in Tuban Regency has the potential to become a representative model for alternative tourism development, focusing on improving the socio-economic well-being of local communities while contributing to the preservation of the natural environment and cultural heritage. This potential can be realized if implemented through a systematic, inclusive, and sustainable strategy.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the adaptation of political strategies by young candidates, particularly Generation Z and millennials, in their campaign behavior in the 2024 elections. This study was conducted through a literature review of six relevant articles to provide a comprehensive overview of contemporary political campaign patterns, which are heavily influenced by developments in digital technology and social media. Platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and Twitter have become key instruments for young candidates to build their image, convey political messages, and reach a wider audience of young voters. These campaign patterns are characterized by the use of personalization strategies, identity politics, and lifestyle-based approaches that are considered to be close to the preferences of Generation Z and millennials. However, based on a review of the literature, the success of young candidates' political strategies is not solely determined by digital popularity. There are other factors that are even more significant, namely the ability to combine modalities, cultural approaches, and adaptive strategies in accordance with the highly diverse social context of Indonesian society. Political modalities include social, economic, cultural, and symbolic capital that complement each other as a basis for electoral power. In addition, cultural approaches have been proven to strengthen political legitimacy through the integration of local values, culture, and religiosity, making young candidates more easily accepted across various social strata. Meanwhile, adaptive strategies allow them to combine offensive strategies—such as creative campaigns and progressive issues with defensive strategies that focus on maintaining their image and countering political attacks. Thus, it can be concluded that young candidates who successfully integrate these three aspects will have a stronger bargaining position in the political arena. They not only function as popular figures in the digital space, but also appear as political representatives rooted in local communities, relevant to the aspirations of the younger generation, and adaptive to changing times. This phenomenon marks the process of political regeneration in Indonesia towards a more participatory, representative, and inclusive direction.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the influence of the Experiential Learning model on critical thinking among high school students in Geography lessons. Essentially, this study focuses on the urgent need to develop higher-level critical thinking among students, which has not been optimized due to traditional teaching methods. This study employs a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design, involving two classes: one as the experimental class following experiential learning-based instruction, and the other as the control class using conventional teaching methods. The research was conducted at SMAN 1 Pujut High School, with a sample of two classes: IPS 1 and IPS 2. Data collection techniques included observation, documentation, and evaluation tests. For data analysis, descriptive statistics (mean, standard deviation) and inferential statistics, including t-tests and simple linear regression, were used. The research findings indicate a significant difference between the critical thinking abilities of students in the experimental class and the control class. The average posttest scores of students in the experimental class were higher (M = 73.426; SD = 7.873) than those in the control class (M = 77.191; SD = 9.329). The t-test showed a significant p-value of p < 0.05. Therefore, it can be concluded that the use of experiential learning is effective in improving students' critical thinking in geography learning at the high school level. Students develop critical thinking skills through learning experiences. In addition to improving critical thinking skills, students are also motivated to learn. Variations in learning models such as this will improve the quality of education.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the influence of using the historical novel Kurir-Kurir Kemerdekaan as a learning source on high school students’ historical imagination. Historical imagination includes the ability to re-enact past events, interpret their meaning reflectively, and understand the emotions and motivations of historical actors within their temporal context. A quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent pretest–posttest group approach was employed. Two classes participated: the experimental group, which used a historical novel, and the control group, which engaged in a project-based shadow puppet performance. Results showed that the experimental group experienced a statistically significant improvement (p < 0.001), from an average score of 25.42 to 52.33, with an N-Gain of 35.56, higher than the control group’s 22.86. Indicator-based analysis revealed the highest gain in empathy (0.39), followed by interpretation (interrogation) at 0.28, and narrative reconstruction (re-enacting) at 0.24. These findings demonstrate that historical novel-based instruction is more effective in enhancing students’ affective and reflective engagement with history. The narrative elements within novels help students form emotional and cognitive connections with the past and interpret historical events in a more humanistic manner.

Abstract

Critical thinking skills of each student significantly influence their cognitive development and adaptability. However, many students still exhibit low levels of critical thinking, which requires immediate attention. This study aims to improve students' critical thinking skills through the implementation of a Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model supported by Pop-Up Book media in Grade X Phase Eat SMAN 1 Padang. This research is classroom action research (CAR). The instructional interventions were delivered by the teacher or conducted by students under the teacher's guidance. The teacher reported on students' learning processes, observed student behavior and engagement, analyzed the outcomes, recorded findings, facilitated peer discussions, and guided class presentations. The classroom action research followed a cyclical model consisting of four main stages: action planning (pre-intervention), action implementation, observation, and reflection. This study was conducted over two cycles, with each cycle consisting of two sessions. Each cycle included the same four phases: planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. In the first cycle, despite some challenges, the implemented learning model demonstrated visible progress. The class average score increased from 47.19 in the pretest to 77.09 after the first cycle, and further improved to 80 in the second cycle. These results indicate that the Problem-Based Learning model supported by Pop-Up Book media had a positive impact on students' critical thinking skills and learning outcomes. Overall, the study concludes that the application of Problem-Based Learning supported by Pop-Up Book media effectively enhanced students' academic achievement at SMAN 1 Padang.

Abstract

This study discusses the life journey of Rusli Marzuki Saria as a journalist and poet in West Sumatra during the period 1969–2018. Biographical studies of regional press figures who contribute to the development of literature remain limited, so their roles in strengthening local literacy and preserving cultural identity have not been widely revealed. This research aims to describe the contribution of Rusli Marzuki Saria in strengthening the press and literary sphere, which supports the sustainability of Minangkabau culture. This study employs a qualitative approach with a narrative design, using biographical interviews, document analysis, and archival research as data collection techniques. The results show that Rusli Marzuki Saria was actively engaged as a journalist and maintained a cultural column in Harian Haluan, while also producing poetry containing local values. His role as a journalist strengthened the mass media as a space for public literacy, whereas his role as a poet helped preserve the cultural identity of the Minangkabau through literary works. These findings illustrate the role and experiences of the figure in a narrative manner, making them relevant to the applied qualitative approach and narrative research design. The study also finds that the presence of Rusli Marzuki Saria influenced the emergence of young writers in West Sumatra. These findings are expected to enrich the literature on biographical studies of Indonesian press and literary figures and serve as an educational reference for young generations in understanding the role of media and literature in building local culture.
