Abstract

This study aims to produce a valid biology module based on emotional spiritual quotient (ESQ) in an evolution topic for senior high school students grade XII. This conducted research used the Plomp development method. In this model, there were three steps established, such as; preliminary research, developing or prototype phase, and assessment phase. For implementation validity, the research subjects were a biology teacher and five biology lecturers. The instrumentation used were; interview questionnaire, self-evaluation sheet, and validity questionnaire. The obtained data analyzed by qualitative and quantitative methods. From the research, yield a new biology module with ESQ based in evolution lesson for senior high school students grade XII. Based on the expert review, obtained the score of validity 3.71 which indicated very valid criteria.

Abstract

The use of non-renewable energy sources such as fossil fuels is very contrary to the concept of sustainable development. The principles of green chemistry can be applied to laboratory work through experiments based on environmental issues such as energy. Biodiesel is an alternative fuel to replace fossil fuels which can be made through the process of transesterification of oils. This research aims to apply the principles of green chemistry in biodiesel synthesis experiments; designing and conducting thoughtful and efficient experiments; characterizing biodiesel products and knowing students' responses to green chemistry-based experiments in biodiesel synthesis. The results showed that the principles of green chemistry were successfully applied in the synthesis of biodiesel. Biodiesel products have a bright yellow colour, pH of 7, and density between 0.866-0.892 g/mL. Water contents range from 1.67-3.3, and acid numbers range from 0.69-4.3. 90/10 tests show the results between range 0.5-3% and kinematic viscosity from 4.195-4.995. Students showed a positive response of 75.36% in designing experimental procedures for greenchemistry-based biodiesel synthesis.

Abstract

Discipline towards science learning is defined as a habit that characterizes students in responding to nature and science object. This study aims to analyze the students' discipline toward science learning. The research using a quantitative approach, this study employed the use of the survey method. From  612 students, the Random Sampling technique was used to select the respondents. Thus, this study analyzed the data from 187 students of State Secondary Schools in Muaro Jambi Regency. The data obtained using questionnaires. The results of the study are based on the measurement of the indicators on the students' discipline in science learning. The findings show that in the first indicator, 69 % of students are categorized as very good. In the second indicator, discipline in joining science lessons, 35,8% of students are categorized as very good. In the third indicator, discipline in doing science tasks, 46% of students are categorized as good. In the fourth indicator, discipline in learning science at home, 47,1%  of students are categorized as fair. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the students’ discipline towards science learning is considered as positive.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the feasibility and effectiveness of experiment media based on Internet of Things (IoT) to enhance the students' HOTS ability on thermodynamics law material. This Research and Development comprises of the following stages: (1) defining needs, (2) designing products, (3) developing products, and (4) disseminating products. Four expert lecturers and two physics teachers serve as the validator. The limited trial subjects consisted of six students of class XI MIPA SMAN 1 Pekalongan; the field test subjects consisted of 108 students who were randomly selected from all XI MIPA classes at SMAN 2 Batang, and the disseminating subjects were teachers of MGMP physics in Batang. The instruments used were expert validation questionnaires, teacher response questionnaires, student response questionnaires, and written tests. The results of the validation of media experts were 3.81 (very good), and material experts were 3.54 (very good). Meanwhile, the results of teacher responses were 3.92 (very good), and the results of student responses were 3.50 (very good). The effective contribution of the IoT-based experimental media to improve the ability of HOTS can be seen from the results of the Multivariate Test analysis on GLM based on the partial eta squared value of 85.9%. This shows that experiment media based on IoT is feasible and effective to enhance the students’ HOTS ability.

Abstract

The Student worksheet based on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) has been prepared, validated, and tested on students at SMAN 5 Banda Aceh. The worksheet guided the students to design a salt-making tool with a sunlight-gathering mirror. The worksheet was developed using the ADDIE model of the research and development (R&D) method. The subjects of the study consisted of 31 students divided into some groups consisting of 6 participants for each. The students were given problems and examples of salt-producing tools using a sunlight-collecting mirror. The purpose of this activity was to let them observe and modify according to their creativity. Based on the assessment of the tool model produced by students, the gained score reached an average score of 91 (very good). After the learning process, the learning outcomes increased with an average of 42 to 70. The science learning motivation and creativity scores of the students after the implementation reached 76 (good) and 79 (good).

Abstract

The assessment of students’ learning results has not been fully implemented. Whereas, the importance of assessing students is to find out the development of learning abilities in solving problems, but many obstacles are still faced by educators at SMAN (high school) 5, SMAN (high school)15, and SMAN (high school) 16 Bandar Lampung. This study aims to produce a valid product and determine the feasibility of construction, substance, and language. Sugiyono's research design development model was divided into (1) potential and problem, (2) data collection, (3) product design, (4) design validation, (5) design revision. The product is valid because the expert validator accepts the instrument in terms of both content and format, including instrument outline, learning scenario, rubric, and scoring guideline. The construction aspect score was 3.59 while the substance aspect score was 3.56, and the language aspect score was 3.58. The validation test result meets very sufficient quality criteria. Therefore, the product performance assessment instrument to measure problem-solving skills in physics inquiry-based learning of senior high school students can be used.

Abstract

Science education has progressed very rapidly both in terms of content and skills as learning experiences. This progress must be responded to by every student and their background, including Sundanese people. Cloning is one aspect of science education content that goes along its controversy, so that argumentation skills are very suitable for every student. It is hoped that they will form opinions based on their point of view on the issue. Sundanese people are known to be simple and to keep their ancestral knowledge from generation to generation. Therefore, it will be very interesting to research how they form opinions on the issue of cloning. This study aimed to investigate the argumentation skills of the eleventh-grade students of a Sundanese High School about Human cloning based on gender and cultural habits. This qualitative research probed argumentation skill quality by claim forming and evidence supplying. Forty-four students of the eleventh-grade were given a research instrument with a snowball sampling technique. Students’ worksheet of cloning was used to trawl data of written argumentation skills. Semi-structured interviews encompassed oral argumentation skills data. The family’s gender awareness data were obtained through questionnaires and interviews. Furthermore, this research utilized a data triangulation tool by using field notes. Four-scale rubrics were used to determine students’ argumentation skills with inductive analysis as a tool to examine the data. The results show that most of the research subjects (Sundanese students) can create simple argument can create mentation skills better than written argumentation skills with relatively no significant differences based on gender differences. According to this research finding, several factors influencing Sundanese students' argumentation skills, such as freedom of opinion-forming in family life, students' role in the family, articulating ideas, and cultural influences, are suggestions.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the implementation and various obstacles of laboratory activities in junior high schools. The study employed the descriptive quantitative method. The subjects of the study were science teachers in 41 junior high schools representing 4 areas of the Natural Sciences Teachers' Consultative Assembly (MGMP IPA) in Jawa Barat Province. The instrument employed was a questionnaire. The technical analysis of the data was conducted by calculating the average percentage of each answer choice of each statement. This research reveals that 1) the students’ motivation for conducting laboratory activities is high; 2) the implementation of laboratory activities is conducted separately by employing theoretical classroom learning; 3) the source of guidance for laboratory activities is a model of cookbook laboratory; and 4) some obstacles in laboratory activities include insufficient laboratory spaces, less standardized and insufficient number of most equipment, the availability of manuals for laboratory activities, insufficient instructions to use laboratory equipment, and teachers’ difficulties in designing, implementing, and evaluating laboratory activities. It is concluded that in general teachers and students are very enthusiastic about conducting laboratory activities in science learning, but they still have several constraints, especially in the available infrastructures.

Abstract

This article aims to describe the implementation of online biology learning in senior high schools (SMA/MA) in the Special Region of Yogyakarta during the pandemic. This study employed a quantitative method and involved 25 SMA/MA biology teachers in the Special Region of Yogyakarta. The data were collected through a survey by distributing questionnaires to the teachers. The results reveal that all SMA/MA biology teachers in Yogyakarta have transformed offline learning into online learning. They conduct blended online learning by combining virtual synchronous activities and asynchronous activities by utilizing online media. The virtual synchronous activities (44%) dominate the learning process, and thus, conducive communication between teachers and students is created. Whatsapp is the most dominant media utilized in the virtual synchronous activities (38%) and asynchronous activities (41%) even though this application is not designed for learning purposes. This study is expected to provide SMA/MA biology teachers’ objective description of their condition in implementing online learning. Consequently, the description can become an evaluation for educational stakeholders and a consideration to conduct related research.

Abstract

Questioning skills, which are identified as higher-order thinking skills, are needed nowadays. In reality, some of the students, including university students, still lacking in confidence to pose their questions. The teaching materials and method that can develop students' questioning skills, such as electronic modules which developed based on industrial revolution 4.0 and adjusted to students' demand as the millennial generation, are necessary. The electronic module integrates with STEM learning is the best way to solve the students' questioning skills problem. The research purpose is to develop a STEM-based E-module to investigate the development of students' questions quality. The research method used in this research are R&D with design ADDIE (Analyze, Design, Develop, Implementation, and Evaluation), while the E-Module are implemented to the students, the qualitative descriptive method is used. The instrument used to collect some data on this research are video transcription, application transcription, reading test, and questionnaire. This research has been conducted on 26 university students who took Science Environmental Technology and Social (SETS) course. Questions' quality rubrics are used to analyze the data. As a result of this research, the implementation of developed STEM-based E-Modules is achievable. After implementation, the result of the student's question quality in general, including both pojok inquiry and pojok eksplorasi activity, is attained. There are improvements shown from activity 1 and activity 2 on pojok inquiry activity but decreased in activity 3. As for pojok eksplorasi, students’ generated question quality is improved gradually. It can be concluded that students’ generated questions quality is slightly developed, which means that it is attained at the beginning of the open question category as higher-level quality. The novel finding of this research is the question’s quality from the lecturer might have some influence on the quality of students’ questions.
