Abstract

This research aimed to explore the factors that promote and hinder youth's mental health during the pandemic. A total of 151 participants (79% female) aged 18-30 years completed an online survey included open-ended questions about their friendship experience. Thematic analysis using an inductive approach yielded several themes. Social support, communication, quality time, openness, emotional bonds, empathy, guidance, and advice were identified as relational aspects that promote mental health. Lack of social support, ineffective communication, emotional and physical distance, and conflicts were identified as relational aspects hindering mental health. Toxic relationship tendencies, such as judgment and imposition, were also considered detrimental to mental health. Furthermore, personal aspects such as integrity in friendship were perceived as positive for mental health, while certain negative personality traits, negative feelings, and thoughts were seen as harmful. The way young people define supportive friends versus "toxic" friends can differ across contexts other than pandemic.

Abstract

One of the problems experienced by adolescents is excessive smoking behavior, which can trigger negative physical and psychological impacts. Smoking intention is one of the antecedents of smoking behavior. Social factors (e.g., parental monitoring and peer pressure) and broader environmental factors (e.g., media exposure) can predict adolescent smoking intention. The objective of this study is to determine the predictors that contribute significantly between parental monitoring, peer pressure, and media exposure to smoking intentions in adolescents. This study involved 161 teenage boys and girls in Banda Aceh. The results of multiple regression analysis indicate that significant predictors of smoking intention are peer pressure and parental control which is a subdimension of parental monitoring. The implication of this study is the importance of having a positive peer environment and parental monitoring as protective factors from the risk of adolescent smoking behavior.

Abstract

Psychological issues are often overlooked in retirement, unlike physical and financial aspects that are deemed to be more conspicuous and comprehensible. Whereas, happiness is our primary goal and reflects mental health. The concept of flourishing is frequently used to depict high levels of mental well-being. Despite debates surrounding hedonic and eudaemonia perspectives, this study examines whether subjective and psychological well-being can predict flourishing in retirees. The study involves 72 members of the University of Brawijaya Retirees Association who have retired for 3-12 years. Data were collected using the PERMA-Profiler, SWLS, SPANE, and PWBS. The results indicate that flourishing in retirees is influenced by subjective and psychological well-being simultaneously (R=0.465, R2=0.216, p=0.000), contributing to 19.3%. Partially, flourishing is more influenced by psychological well-being but not by subjective well-being. Therefore, psychological well-being is the primary predictor of flourishing among members of the University of Brawijaya Retirees Association.

Abstract

Close contact with patients makes healthcare workers have a higher risk to infection and death. Death anxiety and depression might have an impact on the performance of healthcare workers during taking care of the patients. Regression analysis were performed to evaluate the moderating role of social support on the relationship between death anxiety and depression. The aim of this study was to analyze the role of social support as a moderator of the relationship between death anxiety and depression in healthcare workers during the Covid-19 pandemic. This study uses an online survey conducted to 192 healthcare workers in a few cities in Indonesia. This data was measured using the PHQ-9, DAS-E, and MSPSS scales. The data were analyzed by moderated regression analysis. The results of this study indicate that social support does not moderate the relationship between death anxiety and depression in healthcare workers during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Abstract

The prevalence of eating disorder (ED) symptoms is increasing in emerging adults and have negative psychosocial impacts on the individuals. Anxiety has been found to precede the development of ED symptoms. This cross-sectional study aims to investigate the role of psychological inflexibility in the relationship between anxiety and ED symptoms in a sample of 141 female Indonesian emerging adults. Participants completed the adapted version of Trait anxiety subscale of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, the Acceptance and Action Questionnaire-II and Eating Attitudes Test-13 to assess trait anxiety, psychological inflexibility, and ED symptoms respectively. Results showed the indirect effect of trait anxiety and ED symptoms with psychological inflexibility as mediator was significant [b=0.144, 95%CI:(0.02-0.29)]. This suggests that psychological inflexibility can mediate the relationship between anxiety symptoms and ED symptoms. This finding may help creating prevention initiatives targeting psychological inflexibility for individuals vulnerable with anxiety to prevent the development of ED symptoms.

Abstract

In the context of college students' depression, narrative therapy is beneficial to explore and challenge negative self-perceptions and beliefs contributing to their depressive symptoms. Narrative therapy was conducted through telecounseling using a video-conference platform with nine sessions for a female university student in her mid-20s with depressive mood, low energy, and suicidal thoughts, resulting in delays in her academic task fulfillment. She hardly finished her fieldwork reports and had not started her thesis after receiving a study period extension when majority of her classmates had graduated. The intervention was aimed to change client's depression narrative to more empowered preferred stories shaping her new identity so she could graduate from her program. During the  the intervention process, the participant can finish her academic obligations and graduate before the due date. Discussion about the case is provided for practitioners interested in the narrative approach, supported by the worksheets and therapy stages explanation.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the differences in quality of life (QoL) between hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism in Indonesia. This study is a qualitative comparison, with the goal of identifying variations and similarities in the interpretation of QoL in each participants' experiences. Each group was interviewed based on QoL dimension in WHOQOL-BREF. Furthermore, interview transcript was analyzed by deductive thematic analysis. The results were compared across dimension, between the participant in each group, and it was found that there was predisposition to the same physical symptoms. Nevertheless, the causes of the disturbance in physical quality of the two groups were different, as well as the psychological symptoms. Positive social, environmental, and financial support play important roles in the QoL of both groups. Comorbidity became a differentiating factor in the physiological and psychological dynamics of participants in each group.

Abstract

Medical students have a higher risk of academic burnout and perfectionism was found to play a role in this psychological syndrome. The 2 x 2 model of perfectionism proposes that two dimensions of perfectionism, perfectionistic strivings (PS) and perfectionistic concerns (PC), exist and interact at certain level within a person, forming four subtypes of perfectionism, pure PS, pure PC, mixed-perfectionist, and non-perfectionists. This research examines differences of academic burnout based on the four subtypes of perfectionism in medical students (n = 264). The results of simple effect analysis on factorial ANOVA results show academic burnout in medical students is significantly lower in pure PS than mixed-perfectionist and non-perfectionist, and significantly higher in pure PC than mixed-perfectionist and non-perfectionist, in line with the 2 x 2 model of perfectionism. This study shows that the 2 x 2 model of perfectionism is useful for understanding academic burnout in medical students.

Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of expressive arts therapy in mitigating childhood trauma in incarcerated youth, with the aim of reducing the risk of mental disorders, violence, and recidivism by identifying and treating underlying trauma. The study involves 12 participants from the incarcerated youth population, 6 in each group; however, one participant in the control group dropped out of the study during the post-test due to non-attendance. The study used a quasi-experimental design. The experimental group received four sessions over a period of one week. The study found no significant reduction in PTSD symptoms using expressive arts therapy, analyzing for time measured (p=0.700), experimental group (p=0.037), and their interaction (p=0.568). This study found that expressive arts therapy did not significantly reduce posttraumatic stress symptoms in incarcerated youth, likely due to several factors. Future studies should address methodological limitations such as nonrandomization and explore alternative therapies.
