Abstract

Family issues are at the heart of challenges like early marriage and sexual violence. Historically, these problems have been regarded as private matters, making them difficult to address. As the smallest unit of society, the family plays a vital role in tackling these issues. Nahdlatul Ulama, the largest mass organization in Indonesia, has pioneered an important approach by emphasizing the family as a key solution to these challenges. This article explains social innovation in preventing early marriage and sexual violence among young people with a study of the Gerakan Keluarga Maslahah Nahdlatul Ulama (GKMNU) movement. This research uses an qualitative approach with participatory observation and in-depth interviews taking locations in three regions, including Pekalongan Regency, Pekalongan City and Batang Regency. This research analyzes social movement theory and incorporates social innovation concepts. The results of this research show that the GKMNU has implemented several empowerment programs for the community including (1) Maṣlaḥah and Ma’rūf Relations, Good Parenting; (2) Healthy Family (3) Prosperous Family which contains messages of increased income, assets, resilience and (4) Educated Family. The GKMNU program runs using a cultural and structural approach in building a movement that has been proven to have a significant impact on society. The results of this research recommend that GKMNU become a movement that continues to be carried out by continuing to involve all elements and stakeholders of society and continuing to innovate.

Abstract

The dynamics surrounding the determination of the beginning of the Hijri calendar remain a persistent and relevant issue within the Indonesian Muslim community. One notable example is the public resistance that emerged in response to the government’s decision regarding 1 Shawwal, which was perceived to neglect input from various stakeholders. This study aims to explore the forms of resistance and identify the underlying factors contributing to this phenomenon. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected from online news sources and other relevant materials, then categorized and analyzed. The findings reveal that resistance occurs not only at the organizational and group levels but also at the individual level. Furthermore, the study highlights that an individual's level of literacy and mastery of scientific knowledge significantly influences their understanding and acceptance of the calendar decision. By applying Social Representation Theory, this study offers a novel contribution to the literature by shifting the focus from legal-astronomical debates to the sociocultural meanings and identities that shape public responses. This perspective fills a gap in previous studies and provides a more holistic understanding of calendar-related conflicts. The study recommends a more extensive public education effort by the government, including the integration of related knowledge into formal school curricula, as a strategic investment for fostering greater social harmony in the future.

Abstract

Child marriage is still a serious threat to the development of generations in Indonesia. This study aims to reveal the role of the construction of religious and cultural understanding in cases of child marriage in Tanah Mas Village, East Kotawaringin Regency, Central Kalimantan. The construction of religious and cultural understanding that is not comprehensive and partial can trigger child marriage behavior. This research is important to explore the roots of religious and cultural understanding, as well as construction in the families of perpetrators of child marriage in the community in order to rebuild (reconstruct) religious understanding that can prevent child marriage. This research used a qualitative descriptive method with a phenomenological approach. The research subjects were families of perpetrators of child marriage in Tanah Mas Sampit Village. The research was conducted from June to October 2024. Data collection was carried out using interviews, observation, documentation, and Forum Group Discussion. Analysis data was carried out using Cresswell's inductive analysis model. Data validity testing was carried out by triangulating data, extending observations, peer debriefing, and providing opportunities for other parties to provide input. The results showed that religious and cultural understanding are still the reasons for the high rate child marriage in Tanah Mas. In the aspect of religious understanding, the reason why parents immediately marry off their children is because they want to protect their children from acts that are forbidden by religion, their children's desire to be devoted to their parents, and their fear of falling into promiscuity. Meanwhile, in the cultural aspect, the habits of parents and family, the environment, and lack of access to education are the main reasons for child marriage. The social construction that occurs in the practice of child marriage at the research locus through the stages of externalization, objectification, and internalization that occur in the perpetrator's social environment

Abstract

This article examines family conflicts and their resolution based on the local wisdom of Lampung customs, including Pepadun and Saibatin. Because every household is always faced with conflicts, whether mild, moderate or severe, which can lead to household breakdown and social harmonization. Communities that still apply customary values in conflict resolution include Tanggamus and Way Kanan districts. The method used is qualitative, the type of research includes field research conducted in the indigenous Lampung Saibatin community in Tanggamus and Pepadun in Way Kanan. The approach used is ethnography and mubādalah approach. Primary data sources were obtained from Lampung traditional leaders in the two regions. This research found that conflict resolution is based on local wisdom by upholding the philosophy of life piil pesenggiri which priorities deliberation mechanisms, extended family support and conflict resolution offers. Lampung traditional local wisdom is in line with the principle of mubādalah because it provides guidance for family members in carrying out their roles by cooperating with each other, respecting each other and sharing roles for the welfare of the family that contributes to household harmony and divorce prevention.

Abstract

Acculturation in fashion arises as a result of globalization, fostering the integration of local and global cultural elements to create a modern style that adheres to Sharia principles. Two prominent forms of fashion that exemplify this cultural acculturation are the abaya and K-fashion. This article seeks to analyze how young Muslim Gen Z navigates the acculturation of abaya and K-fashion, particularly in their adaptation to local culture and Islamic Sharia guidelines. Additionally, the article underscores the necessity for government support for local fashion industry players who blend global trends, such as K-fashion and abaya, with a distinctly local cultural approach. This support may encompass training, financing, and promotion in international markets. Moreover, the article examines the role of globalization in developing a unique identity for Muslim women and its implications for the fashion industry. The research employs a descriptive qualitative methodology with an anthropological lens, utilizing modeling strategies that encompass attention, retention, reproduction, and motivation. Data for this study were collected through interviews, journals, books, and digital communication platforms, including WhatsApp and Instagram. The results demonstrate that preferences in Muslim women's fashion are heavily influenced by exposure to social media (attention), which drives individuals to purchase these fashion products (retention). The diverse options available can be tailored to align with Islamic norms and Sharia principles (reproduction), thus motivating individuals to curate their fashion collections (motivation).

Abstract

This study explores the role of religious leadership in mobilizing community participation within the context of Islamic boarding schools ‘pondok pesantren’ in East Lombok, Indonesia. The focus is on understanding how the charisma and religious authority of tuan guru influence community engagement in the development and sustainability of these educational institutions. The significance of this research lies in addressing a gap in the literature regarding the interplay between religiosity and social participation in Islamic educational settings. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observations, and document analysis involving key stakeholders, including tuan guru, pesantren administrators, students, and local community members. This study is analyzed using Resource Mobilization Theory, which emphasizes both societal support and constraint of social movement phenomena. Findings show that tuan guru’s approach to leadership—grounded in Islamic values and humility—enabled him to navigate societal resistance, inspiring both material contributions such as land and building materials and non-material contributions such as voluntary labor and moral support. Furthermore, the deeply rooted tradition of gotong royong ‘mutual cooperation’ amplified collective efforts, sustaining the pesantren’s progress. This research contributes to the discourse on religious leadership by highlighting how charismatic and inclusive leadership can transform community dynamics and mobilize collective resources. These findings underscore the importance of integrating cultural and religious values in leadership practices for community development.

This research explores Țibbun Nabawī, a prophetic medicine approach derived from the teachings and practices of the Prophet Muhammad, as an effective rehabilitation strategy for victims of drug abuse at at Yayasan Pengasih Insan Karima (YAPIKA), Indonesia. Unlike conventional rehabilitation methods, Țibbun Nabawī integrates spiritual healing with physical and psychological recovery, which plays an important role in rebuilding social norms and personal identity. This research used a qualitative approach with a case study method. Data collection methods include in-depth interviews, observation, and document analysis. The analytical technique utilized is the source triangulation analysis method, which incorporates principles from spiritual-based recovery and social identity theory. The research findings reveal that the integration of Islamic values in rehabilitation strengthens individuals' motivation to overcome addiction. Spiritual practices such as Qur'an memorization, ażān therapy, and Islamic studies significantly enhance spiritual awareness, while group therapy and social skills training help rebuild social relationships. This study contributes to the discourse of faith-based rehabilitation by mapping Țibbun Nabawī as a structured and holistic addiction recovery strategy. The findings offer practical recommendations for policy makers, rehabilitation centers, and communities to implement a more effective and sustainable recovery framework. Ultimately, this study highlights the importance of integrating Islamic teachings in social rehabilitation, which paves the way for further research on the effectiveness of faith-based approaches in treating addiction.

Abstract

The relocation of the Abbasid capital from Baghdad to Samarra in 836 CE under Caliph al-Mu‘taṣim has long been interpreted as a decisive administrative maneuver that temporarily redefined the geography of Islamic governance. However, prevailing narratives often overlook the deeper political complexities and long-term ramifications of this move. This article seeks to reassess the motivations behind al-Mu‘taṣim’s decision and critically examine the consequences of transferring the seat of power to Samarra. Employing a historical-analytical methodology grounded in primary and secondary sources, the study interrogates factors such as military exigencies, personal predilections, and the caliph’s broader political calculus. The findings reveal that while Samarra emerged as a militarized enclave catering to the needs of the Turkish guard, it failed to eclipse Baghdad’s enduring political and symbolic centrality. The relocation inadvertently exacerbated factionalism and destabilized the caliphal institution, particularly under al-Mu‘taṣim’s successors. This article concludes that the capital shift did not yield the strategic coherence envisioned by its architect and, instead, exposes the fragility of centralized authority within the Abbasid polity. By reevaluating a pivotal yet understudied episode in Abbasid history, the study contributes to broader discussions on urban relocation, imperial governance, and the limits of caliphal power. Further research is needed to explore the longue durée implications of Samarra’s decline for subsequent Islamic political configurations.

Abstract

The development of digital technology has changed the consumption patterns of people, including Muslim students, who are increasingly actively using e-commerce platforms. This study aims to analyze the influence of social behavior, e-commerce use, and Islamic consumption ethics on impulse buying behavior among Muslim students. The method used is a mixed method with a sequential explanatory approach, starting with a quantitative survey of 100 students of the Universitas Islam Negeri Sumatera Utara and continuing with in-depth interviews and focus group discussions to explore quantitative results qualitatively. Linear regression analysis showed that social behavior (r = 0.287, p < 0.001) and e-commerce use (r = 0.127, p < 0.001) had a significant influence on impulse buying. In contrast, Islamic consumption ethics did not show a statistically significant effect (r = 0.009, p = 0.358). The F test indicated that all three independent variables simultaneously had a significant effect on impulse buying. Qualitative findings reveal that, although Islamic values continue to be a consideration in the consumption of essential products, they are not the sole influence. Digital habitus and economic, social, cultural, and symbolic capital influence impulse buying behavior within the framework of Pierre Bourdieu's theory. The integration of technology and consumer culture in the digital era also influences spontaneous purchasing decisions, showing the duality between ethical values and consumptive desires. The impulse buying behavior of Muslim students is not only influenced by needs, but also by the social construction and digital lifestyle that shapes the identity of its consumers.
