Abstract

Introduction: Refractive errors, causing many visual impairments and cases of blindness globally, impose a significant economic and academic burden, especially in children. Myopia, which often co-occurs with astigmatism, poses a challenge to vision correction and can cause symptoms such as asthenopia. While full vision correction reduces asthenopia. This study aimed to explore the appropriateness of vision correction in Madrasah Aliyah Negeri 1 Soppeng students. Method: This cross-sectional study was conducted at Madrasah Aliyah Negeri 1 Soppeng from March to July 2024, involving 243 students selected through total sampling. Vision was measured using the Snellen chart, and the need for spectacle use (met-need, undermet-need, and unmet-need) was evaluated. Data were analyzed based on the impact of refractive error on need for correction, focusing on e-REC, REC and REC-Gap. Result: The study included 243 students, of whom 25.1% had significant refractive errors. Only 12.8% wore glasses, while 50.8% met the need for corrective lenses (REC). The unmet-need rate was 49.2%, and e-REC was 42.6%, indicating that a large proportion of the population was either not wearing glasses or using inappropriate correction. Conclusion: This study found that despite relatively low levels of met-need, undermet-need and unmet-need, REC and REC-gap values remained high. Effective eyewear fulfillment among MAN 1 Soppeng students needs to be improved.

Abstract

Background: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a common microvascular complication of diabetes mellitus that remains a leading cause of preventable blindness worldwide. Chronic hyperglycemia leads to retinal microangiopathy, resulting in progressive damage that may culminate in serious complications. As DR advances, especially into the proliferative stage (PDR), patients may experience vitreous hemorrhage (VH), diabetic macular edema (DME), or tractional retinal detachment (TRD). Methods: This study is a literature review of ten scientific articles published between 2015 and 2024, focusing on the complications and management of DR. Results: The literature highlights that the primary treatment modalities for DR include panretinal photocoagulation (PRP), intravitreal anti-VEGF injections, and vitrectomy. PRP is commonly used for high-risk PDR, anti-VEGF for DME or active neovascularization, and vitrectomy for advanced cases with VH or TRD. Management decisions are highly dependent on the stage of DR and the presence of complications. Conclusion: The management of DR should be adapted to the severity and type of complication. Early diagnosis and timely intervention are crucial to prevent vision loss.

Abstract

Introduction. Penetrating orbitocranial injuries are quite rare but very fatal if left untreated. Various metal objects have been reported as foreign bodies that have penetrated the orbit. However, unusual objects such as motorcycle locks have never been reported before. Case Illustration. A 14-year-old boy was brought to the emergency room with a motorcycle lock embedded in his left temporal region. Examination of the left eye showed decreased vision, clear serous ciliary secretions, conjunctival hyperemia, chemosis, and relative afferent pupillary defect. Investigations using a 3D Head MSCT Scan revealed the presence of a metal object that penetrates the left optic nerve, the rectus lateralis muscle, and the frontal process of the left zygoma bone in the left temporal region, which is located around the MacCarty keyhole. The operation in the form of exploration and foreign object removal was then carried out in collaboration with the neurosurgeon. No postoperative complications were reported, but the patient had restricted movement of the left eye. Discussion. Penetrating orbitocranial injury should be treated as an emergency. Diagnosis should include comprehensive ophthalmological and neurological examinations. CT Scan continues to be the best cranial imaging technique. In this case, the motorcycle lock penetration was around the MacCarty keyhole, a structure that is frequently used to enter both the orbit and the frontal fossa, which located 7 mm superior and 5 mm posterior to the frontozygomatic suture. An appropriate surgical strategy is mandatory for removing the object because it may lead to serious consequences, including cerebral, infectious, vascular complications, and even death. Conclusion. Metal foreign objects such as motorcycle lock was considered unusual, particulary when it unlock an important landmark such as MacCarty keyhole. This case emphasizes the significance of a surgical strategy based on accurate anatomical tracking.

Abstract

Cataracts cause 33% of preventable visual impairment and also cause 51% of blindness in the world. Phacoemulsification is a surgical technique that is widely performed by ophthalmologists throughout the country. The effects caused after phacoemulsification surgery in the form of diseases caused by corneal curvature defects are astigmatism. This study aims to analyze corneal curvature before and after phacoemulsification surgery. The research method is observational analytic with a cross-sectional approach. The results of the study found that the K1 measurement before surgery had a mean or average value of 43.37. The results of the normality test obtained a p value = 0.770> 0.05 meaning that the K1 data before surgery was normally distributed, while after surgery it was 43.41. The results of the normality test obtained a p value = 0.615> 0.05 meaning that the K1 data after surgery was normally distributed. The K2 measurement before surgery was 44.45. The results of the normality test obtained a p value = 0.742> 0.05, meaning that the K2 data before surgery was normally distributed. The K2 measurement after surgery was 44.32. The results of the normality test obtained a p value = 0.331> 0.05, meaning that the K2 data after surgery was normally distributed. In conclusion, there was no difference between the variables studied, namely the results of keratometry measurements before and after phacoemulsification surgery in cataract patients at the JEC Orbita Makassar Eye Clinic.

Abstract

Pterygium is an abnormal growth of the conjunctiva onto the cornea that often causes astigmatism and impairs vision. Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays is a major risk factor. This study aims to analyze changes in astigmatism in pterygium patients who underwent surgery at the JEC Orbita Eye Clinic in Makassar between 2021 and 2023. An analytical observational study with a cohort approach was used to measure changes in astigmatism before and after surgery. The study sample consisted of 26 patients with pterygium who had complete medical records. Data were collected from medical records and analyzed using the Wilcoxon test. The results showed that the majority of patients (53.8%) had mild astigmatism before surgery. After surgery, most patients (53.8%) still had mild astigmatism, with some patients experiencing a significant decrease. The Wilcoxon test showed a significant difference between astigmatism before and after surgery, indicating a significant improvement in most patients. The conclusion of this study shows that pterygium surgery has a significant effect on reducing astigmatism in patients. Although the majority of patients experienced visual improvement after surgery, some patients still showed high astigmatism. The size of the pterygium and the surgical technique play an important role in postoperative results

Abstract

ABSTRACT Punctual student attendance during early morning lectures plays a vital role in ensuring the effectiveness of learning, particularly in medical education, which demands high levels of discipline, academic workload, and mental readiness. However, student tardiness remains a common issue, influenced by various internal and external factors. This study aimed to analyze the factors affecting the punctuality of students’ attendance in the first lecture session at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Muslim Indonesia. A cross-sectional quantitative design was used with a total sample of 197 pre-clinical students from the 2022 cohort, selected through quota sampling. Data were collected using structured questionnaires covering six independent variables: internal factors (learning motivation, sleep quality, and subject interest) and external factors (teaching methods, weather conditions, and learning environment). Data were analyzed using multiple linear regression with SPSS software. The results showed that learning motivation (p = 0.045) and interest in the subject (p = 0.010) had a positive and significant effect on student attendance. Conversely, teaching methods (p = 0.005) and the classroom environment (p < 0.001) had a significant negative effect. Sleep quality (p = 0.257) and weather (p = 0.776) were not statistically significant. The regression model explained 48.7% of the variation in attendance (R² = 0.487). These results show that punctuality in attendance is more influenced by learning motivation and interest in the course than by physical or physiological environmental factors.
