Abstract

Karang Tunggal Village, located in Kutai Kartanegara Regency, has excellent potential in the livestock sector, especially in producing livestock products such as meat and milk. However, managing livestock products and waste still faces various obstacles, including a lack of awareness among farmers regarding efficient and sustainable management practices. This research aims to analyze the application of a participatory approach in education on managing livestock products and waste by directly involving the livestock community. This approach allows farmers to actively participate in every process stage, from problem identification to implementing solutions based on local needs. The data in this research was obtained through in-depth interviews, field observations, and focus group discussions (FGD) involving local breeders and related stakeholders. The research results show increased quality of livestock products, especially regarding cleanliness, food safety, and selling value. Apart from that, there has been a waste reduction that was previously simply thrown away, with innovations in using waste as organic fertilizer and additional feed for livestock. The adoption of more sustainable livestock practices is also starting to be implemented by livestock farmers, improving their economic welfare. Furthermore, this program opens up opportunities for developing value-added processed products, such as pasteurized milk and processed meat, which can increase farmers’ income. Collaboration between farmers in managing joint businesses is also growing, creating a more solid livestock ecosystem. Apart from the economic impact, this participatory approach also increases farmers’ awareness of the importance of sustainability and better environmental management, which contributes to the sustainability of the livestock sector in Karang Tunggal Village.

Abstract

Stingless bee (Trigona sp.) cultivation presents significant potential for livestock diversification, improved food security, and rural economic development. Although this practice offers clear advantages, including low maintenance requirements, minimal environmental risk, and the high nutritional and commercial value of its honey, its adoption in Lempake Subdistrict, North Samarinda, East Kalimantan, remains limited. This situation is primarily due to a lack of community awareness and technical knowledge in apiculture. In response, a community service program was conducted on 10 May 2025 by lecturers from the Faculty of Agriculture, Mulawarman University, in collaboration with local farmer groups and supported by the Samarinda City Government. The program provided structured training through field visits, lectures, interactive discussions, and practical demonstrations at selected apiaries. Post-training evaluations showed a substantial improvement in participants’ understanding of colony management, hygienic honey harvesting, and the economic prospects of stingless bee products. Additionally, the program encouraged entrepreneurial interest and supported the development of value-added functional food products based on local resources. These findings indicate that targeted training and institutional collaboration are effective in promoting sustainable stingless beekeeping practices. Future initiatives should focus on continued technical support and the integration of apiculture products into local and digital markets to enhance competitiveness and economic impact.

Abstract

This community service program aims to enhance the productivity and welfare of local farmers through the optimization of male layer chicken production. Male chickens, often considered by-products of the laying hen industry, are generally overlooked and regarded as less economically viable. However, with the application of appropriate farming strategies, male chickens can become an important alternative source of protein to support food security. The methods implemented in this program include training on poultry management, the use of efficient locally-based feed, and the development of marketing strategies for the production output. The results of the program show a significant improvement in both productivity and the efficiency of male layer chicken farming among local farmers. With ongoing support, this program is expected to become a sustainable empowerment model in the small-scale livestock farming sector.

Abstract

Abstract

Background: Stingless bee honey presents a high-value niche within sustainable agrifood systems, yet small-scale agripreneurs face structural constraints in marketing, certification, and digital engagement that impede inclusive competitiveness. Aim: This study formulates sustainable marketing strategies to empower stingless bee honey agripreneurs in Samarinda, East Kalimantan, thereby enhancing market access, firm-level resilience, and socio-ecological sustainability. Methods: Employing a convergent mixed-methods design, primary data were collected between July and September 2025 through 27 semi-structured interviews, three focus group discussions (FGDs), direct observation, and structured questionnaires involving 65 agripreneurs, eight cooperative leaders, and six local government or institutional stakeholders. Participants were selected using a purposive sampling strategy to ensure representation across enterprise scales and cooperative membership. Internal and external determinants were assessed using IFE and EFE matrices; results were integrated via IE and SWOT frameworks to derive strategy clusters. Results: The IFE (score = 2.86) and EFE (score = 2.93) positions indicate a “Growth and Build” strategic posture. Four strategy clusters emerged: SO (eco-branding, certification, tourism linkages, e-commerce expansion), WO (digital literacy, quality assurance, managerial capacity building, inclusive finance), ST (value-chain diversification, R&D partnerships, sustainability differentiation, cooperative logistics), and WT (community microfinance, joint marketing, insurance/risk-sharing, partnership models). Triangulation of qualitative and quantitative findings strengthens the validity of these strategic priorities. Conclusion: Integrating sustainability principles with digital marketing and cooperative governance offers a viable pathway for transforming stingless bee honey firms into resilient, inclusive agribusinesses. Policy and institutional support that bolsters access to certification, digital capacity, and cooperative finance are pivotal in translating ecological strengths into competitive market outcomes.
