Abstract

Alas Strait is the one of the main coral reef fishing grounds in West Nusa Tenggara (WNT generating high economic value for coastal communities, particularly through grouper (Epinephelidae) fisheries. This area is also designated as a provincial priority zone for coral reef fish resource management. This study aimed to describe the variability in species composition and length distribution of groupers caught by local fishers operating in the Alas Strait. Field survey were conducted in May–June 2024 and February 2025 using direct measurement and interview methods. Grouper samples were obtained from fishers’ catches in the Alas Strait and from the Tanjung Luar Fish Market using accidental sampling and fishers recruited using snowball sampling. Data were analyzed to characterise species composition structure and length-frequency distribution. This research showed 36 grouper species in total recorded from fishers’ catches in the Alas Strait during the study period. The most dominant species were Epinephelus fasciatus (25.47%), Epinephelus coioides (7.87%), Epinephelus areolatus (6.74%), and Epinephelus ongus (6.74%). Length distribution indicated E. fasciatus and E. ongus were predominantly caught at the mature gonadal stages, while E. coioides and E. areolatus were mostly captured in the immature stages. Abstract

The Tanjung Luar Fishing Port (PPTL) in East Lombok is one of Indonesia’s major shark-landing centers operating within Fisheries Management Area (WPP) 573 of the Indian Ocean. Intensive fishing activities carried out for commercial purposes have exerted significant pressure on shark populations in the region. This research aims to analyze species composition, conservation status, size distribution, and sex ratio of sharks landed at Tanjung Luar Fishing Port as a basis for developing sustainable shark fisheries management strategies. Data collection was conducted through direct observation of fishermen’s catches from March to June 2025. The results showed that a total of 2,002 individual sharks were identified, consisting of 33 species. The most dominant species was the silky shark (Carcharhinus falciformis), accounting for 46.6% of the total catch, followed by the tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier) (18.3%), the scalloped hammerhead (Sphyrna lewini) (6.6%), and Carcharhinus limbatus (5.7%). Based on the IUCN Red List (2023), the catch included 2 species classified as Critically Endangered (CR), 7 Endangered (EN), and 10 Vulnerable (VU), with 22 species listed in CITES Appendix II. The landed sharks were predominantly adults and subadults with total lengths ranging from 120–280 cm. The sex ratio revealed a significant imbalance, with approximately 3.3 females for every male. These findings indicate high exploitation pressure on shark populations, particularly on mature females, highlighting the need for adaptive and sustainable management strategies for shark fisheries.

Abstract

Ikan kakap cunding (Lutjanus gibbus) merupakan salah satu spesies demersal penting dari famili Lutjanidae yang berperan dalam menjaga keseimbangan ekosistem serta bernilai ekonomis bagi masyarakat pesisir. Namun, di Perairan Sekotong, Kabupaten Lombok Barat, spesies ini menghadapi tekanan penangkapan yang dapat mengancam kelestariannya. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi distribusi ukuran panjang dan berat serta pola pertumbuhan ikan kakap cunding di Perairan Sekotong. Penelitian dilakukan pada Maret–Mei 2025 dengan metode accidental sampling, menghasilkan 1.099 individu sampel yang diukur panjang dan beratnya. Hasil menunjukkan kisaran panjang 17,67–47,19 cm dan berat 99–1.615 g. Analisis hubungan panjang-berat menghasilkan nilai b = 2,6337 yang menunjukkan pola pertumbuhan alometrik negatif, artinya pertumbuhan panjang lebih cepat daripada berat. Sebagian besar ikan tertangkap dalam kondisi matang gonad, namun 81,71% berada di bawah batas berat minimum yang ditetapkan regulasi (500 g). Pola pertumbuhan yang tidak konsisten dikarenakan beragam faktor yang dipengaruhi oleh lingkungan dan fisiologis serta ketersediaan makanan di habitatnya. Hasil ini mengindikasikan perlunya evaluasi kebijakan ukuran minimum tangkapan agar sesuai dengan kondisi biologis ikan di lapangan dan ketidak sesuaian dengan Peraturan Gubernur Nusa Tenggara Barat Nomor 55 Tahun 2023 terkait ukuran minimum ikan kakap cunding yang boleh ditangkap yaitu minimal 500 gram.   The humpback red snapper (Lutjanus gibbus) is an important demersal of the Lutjanidae family that plays a role in maintaining ecosystem balance and has economic value for coastal communities. However, in the wates of Sekotong, West Lombok Regency, this species faces fishing pressure that threatens its sustainability. This study aimed to identify the size distribution and growth pattern of L. gibbus in Sekotong waters. Fieldwork was conducted from March to May 2025 using accidental sampling, with a total of 1.099 individuals analyzed resulting in 1,099 individuals measured for length and weight. The result show a length range of 17.67 to 47.19 cm and 99 to 1,615 g in weight. The length-weight relationship showed a growth exponent of b = 2.6337, indicating a negative allometric growth pattern, where length increases faster than weight. Although the majority of individuals caught were biologically mature 81.71% fell below Most individuals caught were in a mature gonadal stage, yet 81.71% were below the regulatory minimum weight limit of 500 g. These findings suggest that the current legal size regulation (500 gram) in West Nusa Tenggara Governor Regulation No. 55 of 2023 may not align with the biological maturity of the species, highlighting the need for re-evaluation and adjustment of the current minimum landing size regulation policy adjustments to support sustainable fisheries management.
