Abstract

One of the endemic plants of East Kalimantan, kapur (Dryobalanops aromatica) belongs to the Dipterocarpaceae family and is typically used by the locals for essential oils. Solid waste is only used as a natural fertilizer, while the leaves and bark of Kapur (Dryobalanops aromatica) are often only used for the essential oil extracted. Research on solid waste from distilling kapur (Dryobalanops aromatica) has never been done. This investigation aimed to find the possible concentration of secondary metabolite chemicals and antioxidants in the ethanol extract of solid waste from distilling Kapur leaves and bark (Dryobalanops aromatica). The ethanol extract of Kapur leaves and bark (Dryobalanops aromatica) will undergo phytochemical testing utilizing a qualitative test method to ascertain the presence of secondary metabolite chemicals. The ethanol extract of Kapur leaves and bark (Dryobalanops aromatica) will be tested for antioxidant activity against DPPH and ABTS free radicals using a UV Spectrophotometer. The results of the phytochemical analysis showed that the ethanol extracts from the leaves and bark contained alkaloids, flavonoids and tannin. Triterpenoids are only found in the bark extracts, while saponins and steroids are only found in the leaves extracts. Antioxidant activity of Dryobalanops atomatica extract showed that ethanol extract displayed an ability to inhibit DPPH free radical in both the leaves and bark ethanol extracts, with percentages of 83.24% and 94.91% at 25 ppm concentration, respectively. Antioxidant activity of Dryobalanops atomatica extract showed that ethanol extract could inhibit DPPH free radical in the leaves and bark ethanol extracts, with percentages of 83.24% and 94.91% at 25 ppm concentration, respectively. Antioxidant activity of Dryobalanops atomatica extract showed that ethanol extract display an ability to inhibit ABTS free radical with a percentage of 84.23% at 50 ppm concentration in the leaves extracts, followed by 82.62% percentage of inhibition at 100 ppm concentration. According to the findings of the study, post-distillation solid waste from Dryobalanops aromatica leaves and bark had the potential to develop as a natural antioxidant.

Abstract

Anemia during pregnancy remains a prevalent public health concern, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Nutritional status, including body mass index (BMI), mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC), and gestational weight gain (GWG), is believed to play a crucial role in the development of anemia, especially during the third trimester when physiological hemodilution peak. This cross-sectional study was conducted among 53 pregnant women in their third trimester at the Bengkuring Samarinda Public Health Centre, Indonesia in 2023. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and clinical assessments. Nutritional status was assessed via BMI, MUAC, and GWG, while anemia was determined using hemoglobin levels. Statistical analysis included chi-square tests and Spearman correlation to determine the association between nutritional indicators and anemia incidence. A significant relationship was found between nutritional status and anemia. Underweight and overweight BMI were both associated with increased anemia prevalence (p < 0.05), indicating that extreme BMI values pose a risk. Women with low MUAC (indicative of chronic energy deficiency) showed a higher proportion of anemia (p = 0.046; r = –0.275). Inadequate GWG was also significantly related to anemia (p = 0.011; r = –0.345). Most anemic cases were classified as mild, with overweight and undernourished women exhibiting higher susceptibility due to impaired iron metabolism and suboptimal nutrient reserves. The findings support the hypothesis that maternal nutritional status significantly influences anemia in late pregnancy. The results emphasize the need for early identification of at-risk women based on BMI, MUAC, and GWG. These parameters can serve as simple, cost-effective screening tools in antenatal care settings to prevent adverse maternal and fetal outcomes. This study concludes that both undernutrition and overnutrition are significantly associated with anemia during late pregnancy. Monitoring maternal nutritional indicators such as BMI, MUAC, and GWG is essential in antenatal practice to reduce anemia-related complications.

Abstract

Labour pain is a physiological process that can cause significant anxiety, tension, and fatigue. Non-pharmacological interventions such as aromatherapy are increasingly considered to manage labour pain with minimal side effects. Lavender essential oil, known for its sedative and anxiolytic properties, has shown promise in reducing pain perception during childbirth. This study aimed to examine the effect of lavender aromatherapy on the level of labour pain among women in the active phase of the first stage of labour. A quasi-experimental study with a pretest-posttest control group design was conducted at Dirgahayu Hospital, Samarinda, Indonesia. A total of 36 women in the active phase of labour were recruited using purposive sampling and assigned to intervention (n = 18) and control (n = 18) groups. The intervention group received lavender aromatherapy via inhalation using a diffuser (4–5 drops of lavender oil in 20 ml of water) for 1 hour, while the control group was instructed in deep breathing relaxation techniques. Labour pain was assessed before and after the intervention using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS). The intervention group showed a significant reduction in pain scores, from a mean of 6.33 to 5.56 (Mean different = –0.77), while the control group showed a minimal increase from 6.06 to 6.11 (Mean different = +0.05). Statistical analysis using a paired t-test revealed a significant difference in the intervention group (p = 0.001), indicating the effectiveness of lavender aromatherapy in reducing labour pain. Lavender aromatherapy significantly reduced the intensity of labour pain during the active phase of the first stage of labour. This non-invasive and cost-effective intervention can be considered as a complementary method in intrapartum care to enhance maternal comfort and support physiological childbirth.

Abstract

Premarital sexual behavior has become a significant social issue among adolescents in Indonesia, particularly concerning the high rates of child marriage and unintended pregnancies. Despite efforts to promote Marriage Maturity to reduce these rates, its effectiveness requires further investigation, especially in the context of adolescent motivation to avoid risky sexual behavior. This study aims to explore adolescent motivation to avoid premarital sexual behavior by applying the Protection Motivation Theory (PMT), which involves threat appraisal and coping appraisal in adolescent decision-making to delay early marriage. This research employs a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. Informant consisted of adolescents aged 15-19 years in Samarinda City who had received information about marriage maturity. Data was collected through in-depth interviews with six purposively selected Informant using intensity sampling techniques. Data validity was ensured through source triangulation and documentation. Collected data were analyzed using QSR NVIVO 12 Pro. The findings reveal that adolescents’ understanding of marriage maturityis still limited, and the threat of premarital sexual behavior is perceived as low by most Informant. Factors such as perceptions of severity adolescents are quite good because they have seen firsthand the impacts of premarital sex. For response efficacy and self-efficacy in delaying the age of marriage, these are relatively high among adolescents exposed to PUP. This is because they have parental and peer support providing information related to PUP. Additionally, social environment, media exposure, and education levels shape adolescents' responses to marriage maturityas a protective measure.
