The population was English education students in the second and third years. There were 62 students who participated in this research. They were selected by using a convenience sampling technique. To gain the data, this research employed a questionnaire as a research instrument which consists of 16 items of statements. The data, then, were analyzed by employing descriptive statistics. Based on the data analysis, it was found that students’ autonomous learning activities outside the classroom are still limited to activities that are entertaining for them. Apart from that, it has not been found that their extra efforts are done independently to become more proficient in every English skill. This indicates that students are still passive learners. By knowing the independent learning efforts carried out by students out of the classroom, English lecturers are expected to be able to design policies or teaching strategies to guide students so that they can increase their efforts by optimizing the wealth of available independent learning resources.

Abstract

The lack of familiarity among students with learning English word pronunciation is a pressing issue that needs immediate attention. Mastering both the meaning and pronunciation of vocabulary is crucial. Many students aspire to speak English with a good accent, and they would greatly benefit from additional resources to practice pronunciation. One such solution is the Elsa Speak Application, which has proven effective in addressing students’ pronunciation difficulties. In this research conducted at LIBAM IAIN Parepare, an experiment design using pre and posttests was implemented with a sample of 15 students selected through cluster random sampling. The results indicated that students’ pronunciation at LIBAM was initially categorized as poor in the pretest (score: 52.00), but significantly improved to a very good category in the posttest (score: 82.00). The indicators focused on vowel and consonant sounds, as well as word and sentence stress. The analysis of the improvement demonstrated that the null hypothesis was rejected (t-value: 2.497 > 1.345), confirming the acceptance of the alternative hypothesis. Therefore, the research concluded that there was a noticeable improvement in students’ pronunciation using the Elsa Speak Application at LIBAM IAIN Parepare.

Abstract

This study investigates innovative strategies and challenges in online grammar instruction within the English Language Education Department at IAIN Parepare, Indonesia. As digital learning becomes increasingly integrated into higher education, the research focuses on the experiences of 40 students and 5 online grammar instructors. Through a mixed-methods approach, incorporating surveys of all 40 students and in-depth interviews with the 5 tutors, this study investigates the adaptation of traditional grammar teaching methods to digital platforms. Key findings reveal that interactive tools, gamification, and personalized learning paths significantly enhance student engagement and comprehension in online grammar lessons. However, challenges such as varying levels of digital literacy among students, maintaining consistent motivation in virtual environments, and the limitations of asynchronous communication emerge as significant hurdles. The study concludes by proposing a tailored framework for effective online grammar instruction at IAIN Parepare, emphasizing the integration of culturally relevant multimedia resources, collaborative learning activities, and adaptive assessment techniques. These insights contribute to the growing body of knowledge on digital pedagogy in Indonesian higher education and offer practical implications for educators navigating the complexities of online language instruction in similar institutional settings.

Abstract

The intent of the study was to examine the efficacy of using the Speech Ace program in enhancing the English pronunciation of senior high school. A pre-experimental approach was used, consisting of one experimental class that included Speech Ace during sessions that received standard education. Both courses underwent pre-testing and post-testing to assess their pronunciation abilities. The findings demonstrated a statistically significant enhancement in the average score of the experimental group's post- test, which increased from 64,85 to 74,38. On the other hand. A t-test analysis comparing independent samples showed a statistically significant difference between the groups, with a p-value of 0.000, which is less than the significance level of 0.05. As a result, it was determined that the study hypothesis was confirmed, indicating that SpeechAce had a considerable impact on students' English-pronunciation proficiency. The good evaluations of SpeechAce were also seen in the student interviews and surveys. In summary, the results of the study provide concrete evidence that using technology-based tools like SpeechAce may significantly improve students' pronunciation abilities when used with traditional teaching techniques.
